To cancel a 24 Hour Fitness membership, monthly-payment members can cancel online through their My24 account, by phone at (866) 308-8179, or by certified mail; prepaid and limited-term members generally have to cancel in person at a club or by contacting the company directly.124 Hour Fitness. Cancel Membership Options Whichever route you use, submit your notice at least 30 days before your next billing date, keep a written confirmation, and check whether the $69.99 annual enhancement fee is about to hit.
Check Your Membership Type First
24 Hour Fitness treats monthly-payment memberships and prepaid or limited-term memberships differently, and the type you hold controls which cancellation channels are open to you. Monthly-payment members can cancel online, by phone, or in person. Prepaid annual and limited-term members have to either visit a club or contact the company directly.124 Hour Fitness. If you aren’t sure which one you have, log in to your My24 account and look at your billing frequency.224 Hour Fitness. My24 Account Confirming this before you start saves a trip and can prevent an extra billing cycle from posting while you sort out the right channel.
Cancel Online
For monthly-payment members, the online path is the fastest. Log in to My24, go to the cancellation page, and click the link that reads “Please cancel my membership.”324 Hour Fitness. Cancel Membership Options Follow the prompts to the end. Do not close the browser until you see a confirmation screen or reference number, and take a screenshot. If nothing confirms, treat the cancellation as incomplete and call to verify.
Cancel by Phone
Call member services at (866) 308-8179 with your membership ID in hand. Ask the representative for a confirmation number and the exact date your membership will end, and write both down. If you’re offered a discounted rate or transferred to a retention specialist, you can decline and insist on cancellation.
Cancel by Certified Mail
A letter sent by certified mail with return receipt requested creates the strongest paper trail. Address it to the Member Services department and include your full name, membership ID, and the date you want the cancellation to take effect. The return receipt proves exactly when the company received your notice, which is what matters if there’s ever a dispute about when your 30-day notice period started.
Cancel in Person
Prepaid and limited-term members generally need to cancel at a club location.124 Hour Fitness. Cancel Membership Options Go during staffed hours, ask to speak with a team member about ending your membership, and request a signed, dated copy of any paperwork you fill out. That receipt is your evidence if the gym later says it never got the request.
The 30-Day Notice Window
Month-to-month memberships typically require 30 days’ notice before cancellation takes effect. If you submit notice today, you should expect one more billing cycle to post, and your access continues through the end of that final paid period.
Timing is where extra charges come from. If your billing date is the 1st and you cancel on the 5th, your notice period runs into the following month, so the next 1st still bills. Cancel as soon as you’ve decided, not the day before your next charge.
Watch for the $69.99 Annual Enhancement Fee
Every 24 Hour Fitness membership carries a $69.99 annual enhancement fee, billed on the 15th day after enrollment and once a year after that. Members in Hawaii and Nevada are exempt.424 Hour Fitness. Deals on Gym Membership The fee is separate from monthly dues, applies regardless of use, and can even hit during a membership freeze.524 Hour Fitness. Membership Policies and Club Rules If your annual fee anniversary is coming up, cancel far enough ahead that your 30-day notice period ends before that date.
If You Just Signed Up
Most states give consumers a cooling-off period after signing a gym contract, typically three to five business days, during which you can cancel for any reason and owe nothing. Some states are more generous: Georgia allows seven days, Maryland provides seven business days, Rhode Island gives ten business days, and North Dakota allows 15 days. A few states have no statutory cooling-off period and follow whatever the contract says.
Send your cancellation in writing right away. A verbal request at the front desk is not reliable proof. Certified mail, or a hand-delivered letter with a signed acknowledgment, protects you if the gym later disputes the timing.
Canceling for Medical Reasons or a Move
24 Hour Fitness may waive early termination consequences for a documented medical disability or a permanent move away from all club locations.
For a medical cancellation, you’ll need a signed letter from your doctor on official letterhead. It should list your name and date of birth, the diagnosis, an explanation of why exercise could worsen your condition, a recommendation that the membership be canceled, and the doctor’s signature with license number and contact information. A vague note saying the patient should not exercise usually isn’t enough; the letter has to connect the diagnosis to the specific inability to use gym facilities.
For relocation, the general industry standard is a move of more than 25 miles from the nearest club. Expect to provide proof of your new address, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or employment transfer letter. 24 Hour Fitness’s own member policies use that 25-mile threshold in the context of temporary employment transfers qualifying for a freeze.524 Hour Fitness. Active-Duty Military Cancellation
Active-duty service members have federal protections under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. The SCRA specifically covers gym memberships and allows termination after receiving military orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the membership.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts
Deliver a written or electronic notice of termination along with a copy of your military orders. The gym cannot charge an early termination fee, and any prepaid amounts covering the period after your termination date must be refunded within 60 days, minus the remainder of the billing period in which the termination occurs.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts These rights override anything in the membership contract.
Consider a Freeze If Your Reason Is Temporary
If you’re leaving for a few months rather than for good, a freeze may be a better fit than a full cancellation. 24 Hour Fitness offers freezes in four categories:524 Hour Fitness. Membership Policies and Club Rules
- Medical disability: 3 to 6 months, with written verification from your physician.
- Extended volunteer assignment: 3 to 6 months, with documentation of the assignment.
- Temporary employment transfer: 3 to 6 months, with a letter from your employer on company letterhead confirming the transfer is more than 25 miles from the nearest club.
- Active duty military transfer: no minimum or maximum duration, with a copy of deployment or transfer orders.
If none of those fit, you can request an extended freeze for any other reason, up to 12 months. Monthly dues stop during an approved freeze, but the $69.99 annual enhancement fee still applies if it falls during the freeze period.524 Hour Fitness. Membership Policies and Club Rules
Do Not Simply Stop Paying
Canceling your credit card or letting payments bounce does not cancel your membership. If you skip the formal cancellation process, 24 Hour Fitness can treat the unpaid dues as a debt, send the balance to collections, and that collections account can appear on your credit report and lower your score. Some credit scoring models ignore collection amounts under $100, but monthly dues will usually cross that threshold within a few cycles.
If payments have already lapsed and you never formally canceled, call member services at (866) 308-8179. You may have to clear an outstanding balance before the cancellation can be processed, but that’s better than watching the debt grow while the account technically stays open.
