What to Have Ready Before You Call or Log In
Pull these together first. The call or the online form moves faster when you’re not hunting for details mid-process:
- Your account number, printed in the top-right area of your monthly bill or shown in your online dashboard.
- The exact service address where power is currently flowing.
- Identity verification: the last four digits of the primary account holder’s Social Security number, or the account password you set at signup.
- The calendar date you want service to end, so the final meter reading matches your move-out.
- A forwarding address for the final bill and any deposit refund.

Will You Owe an Early Termination Fee?
Your exposure depends on the plan. Fixed-rate plans run at least three months, and leaving early triggers a termination fee.34Change Energy. Value Based Brands LLC dba 4Change Energy Residential Terms of Service On current plans, that fee runs $20 for each month left on the contract.44Change Energy. Electricity Facts Label – Power Maxx Saver 12 Cancel a 12-month plan with eight months to go and you’d owe $160. Month-to-month plans carry no termination fee.
The exact formula for your specific plan is on the Electricity Facts Label you received at enrollment; that document is also in your online account. Check it rather than assuming every plan calculates the fee the same way.
Four Ways the Fee Goes Away
You’re Within the First Three Business Days
Under PUCT Substantive Rule 25.475, you can cancel a new electricity contract within three federal business days of receiving the terms of service, with no fee or penalty.5Public Utility Commission of Texas. 16 TAC 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures Federal business days exclude weekends and holidays, so terms received on a Wednesday give you through the following Monday. Call (855) 784-2426 within that window and follow up in writing. The terms of service themselves are required to include the rescission instructions.
You’re Moving
This is the exemption most people miss. A Texas electricity contract is tied to a specific service address. When you move, the provider cannot charge an early termination fee if you provide a forwarding address and, if asked, reasonable evidence that you no longer live at the original location.5Public Utility Commission of Texas. 16 TAC 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures A lease termination notice, a home-sale closing document, or a utility bill at your new address all work. If a representative tries to bill the fee anyway, cite the rule.
You’re a New Customer Within 60 Days
4Change Energy’s satisfaction guarantee waives the termination fee if a new customer calls to cancel within 60 days of the contract start date.64Change Energy. 4Change Energy Satisfaction Guarantee You still pay for the electricity you used, but the penalty itself disappears. The guarantee only covers your first plan with the company, not renewals or plan switches.
Your Contract Has Already Expired
If you do nothing when a fixed-rate contract ends, service doesn’t shut off. 4Change automatically rolls you onto a default month-to-month product,34Change Energy. Value Based Brands LLC dba 4Change Energy Residential Terms of Service where the rate is almost always higher than what you had been paying. From that point forward you can leave any time without a termination fee. You’ll just be paying the higher rate for every day you delay.
Switching Providers Instead of Canceling
If you’re staying at the same address and just changing providers, you don’t need to call 4Change Energy separately. Sign up with the new provider and they’ll coordinate the administrative transfer with the local Transmission and Distribution Service Provider. Your power stays on through the switch.
Contract timing still matters. Switching mid-contract triggers the same early termination fee unless one of the exemptions above applies. The cleanest approach is to time the switch for the end of your fixed-rate term. Shop rates on PowerToChoose.org and line up a new plan to start the day the old one ends.
Final Bill and Deposit Refund
On your disconnection date, the Transmission and Distribution Service Provider takes a final meter reading. That reading sets your last kilowatt-hour usage, and 4Change generates a closing invoice. If you paid a security deposit at enrollment, it’s applied to the final balance, and any remaining credit is refunded.
The forwarding address you provided is where the final statement and any refund will go, so confirm it’s correct. If a few weeks pass with no final bill, call (855) 784-2426 to check the status.24Change Energy. Customer Support – Electricity Service Texas
If Something Goes Wrong
If 4Change bills a termination fee you believe was improper, refuses to honor the moving exemption, or mishandles your final invoice, contact the company first and try to resolve it. If that fails, file a complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas through the online portal at puc.texas.gov or by calling 1-888-782-8477.7Public Utility Commission of Texas.
