How to Become a Certified IRB Professional: Exam and Renewal

To become a Certified IRB Professional, you need at least two years of full-time IRB administrative experience within the past seven years, an approved application submitted to Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), and a passing score on the 130-question CIP exam.1PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional Eligibility The credential is the recognized national standard for people who administer Institutional Review Boards overseeing research with human participants, and the path to it is the same regardless of your degree.

Do You Qualify

Every candidate needs 24 months of full-time experience performing IRB administrative functions, accumulated in the seven years before applying.1PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional Eligibility There is no separate tier for candidates with graduate degrees or without any degree. The two-year minimum applies to everyone.

Part-time experience counts, but it is prorated by the percentage of your work time spent on IRB functions. Half-time IRB work means one calendar year equals six months of eligible experience, so four calendar years at that rate would meet the requirement.1PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional Eligibility

The qualifying work is specific: reviewing protocols for regulatory compliance, managing board agendas and minutes, determining whether studies qualify for expedited review or need full board consideration, and processing informed consent documentation. Experience as a principal investigator or research coordinator does not count, even if that work involved regular interaction with an IRB.2PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Exam The credential is aimed at the people who run the oversight process, not those whose research goes through it.

Submitting the Application

The application package has three pieces: the CIP Exam Application form, a signed work verification form documenting your IRB duties and employment dates, and a current CV or résumé that reflects your IRB responsibilities.1PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional Eligibility If you’re unsure whether your experience qualifies, PRIM&R will do a preliminary eligibility check from just the CV and work verification form before you complete the full application.

The work verification form is where applications commonly stall. It has to be signed, and it needs to describe the specific IRB functions you performed rather than just your job title. A generic line like “supported research compliance” is not enough. Break out your actual tasks: protocol review, meeting coordination, regulatory correspondence, consent form processing.

Once PRIM&R approves the application, you get an eligibility notice by email that opens a 90-day window to schedule and sit for the exam. The $425 exam fee is paid online when you schedule, not when you apply. The fee is flat, with no member pricing.2PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Exam

What the Exam Covers

The CIP exam is built around three domains with uneven weight. Study time should follow the weights:

  • IRB Responsibilities, 54 percent. Levels of review, regulatory criteria for approval, informed consent, privacy and confidentiality including HIPAA, vulnerable populations, and monitoring and reporting problems such as noncompliance and unanticipated adverse events.
  • Human Subjects Protection, 29 percent. The Belmont Report principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice; the Common Rule at 45 CFR 46; FDA regulations at 21 CFR 50 and 21 CFR 56; and agency-specific requirements from the Department of Defense, NIH, and others.
  • Institutional Responsibilities, 17 percent. Cooperative research and single-IRB arrangements, conflicts of interest, regulatory reporting obligations, document retention, and educational programs.

The Belmont Report threads through multiple domains, establishing that ethical research rests on treating people as autonomous agents and protecting those with diminished autonomy, actively securing participants’ well-being while minimizing harm, and distributing benefits and burdens fairly.4HHS.gov. The Belmont Report Read the full report before you drill into the regulations. It gives you the framework the rest hangs on.

PRIM&R publishes an Exam Content Outline and a References and Resources list on its website.5PRIM&R. CIP Resources The outline is effectively the exam blueprint, and the references list names the regulations, guidance documents, and ethical codes the exam draws from. Working through those primary sources is more reliable than relying on secondhand summaries.

Exam Day and Results

The CIP exam runs on a continuous basis rather than in fixed testing windows. You can sit at a PSI testing center or through live remote online proctoring, whichever fits.2PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Exam PSI has centers around the country, and the online option lets you test from home or an office with a stable internet connection and a webcam. PRIM&R recommends watching PSI’s tutorial videos for both formats before choosing.

The exam has 130 multiple-choice questions and a three-hour time limit. Of the 130, 115 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest items being evaluated for future use. You won’t know which is which, so answer every question as if it counts.6PRIM&R. PRIM&R CIP and CPIA Credential Exams

Scores arrive by email and through PSI’s website within about an hour of finishing.7PRIM&R. If You Don’t Pass

There is no lifetime cap on attempts. You must wait 90 days before reapplying, and each attempt requires a new application and the full $425 fee.2PRIM&R. Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Exam Use the 90 days to target your weakest area. Because IRB Responsibilities carries more than half the exam weight, preparation that leaned too heavily on regulatory foundations is often the place to recalibrate.

Keeping the Credential After You Pass

Certification is valid for three years. Before it expires, you recertify either by completing 30 hours of eligible continuing education or by retaking and passing the current exam. The recertification fee is $425 either way.8PRIM&R. About CIP Recertification

Continuing education hours have to cover topics inside the CIP Body of Knowledge as it applies to IRB administration. Eligible activities include conferences, workshops, webinars, and advanced training from recognized providers. You submit a completed CE Tracker spreadsheet with supporting documentation for every hour claimed. Incomplete or improper documentation is grounds for denial, and the fee is not refunded if your application is rejected on that basis.8PRIM&R. About CIP Recertification

If you plan to recertify by exam instead, you can apply on a rolling basis. The earliest is one year before your expiration date, and the latest you can test is the expiration date itself.8PRIM&R. About CIP Recertification

Lapsing has consequences. If your certification lapses by more than six months, continuing education alone will not restore it and you must retake the exam.3PRIM&R. CIP Candidate Handbook You also cannot use the CIP designation after your name during any period the credential is inactive.
