How to Apply for SSDI for My Child: Eligibility, Filing, and Appeals

To apply for SSDI for your child, first figure out which Social Security program actually fits, because “SSDI for a child” usually means one of two very different claims. If you receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits, or a parent has died with enough work credits, your child can draw Child’s Insurance Benefits on that parent’s record under Title II — and the child does not need to be disabled to qualify. If your child has a serious medical condition and your household income is limited, the right program is Supplemental Security Income (SSI) under Title XVI. You start either claim by gathering identity and medical records and contacting Social Security online, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at your local field office.¹

Which Program Fits Your Family

Sort yourself into the right lane before filling out anything. A child can qualify under both programs at once, one, or neither.

Title II Child’s Insurance Benefits: your child is unmarried and under 18 (or under 19 and a full-time elementary or secondary student), and a parent gets Social Security retirement or disability benefits or died with enough work credits. No disability needed for the child.
Title II Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits: your child is 18 or older, the disability began before age 22, and a parent receives Social Security or is deceased. The adult child is evaluated under the adult disability rules.
SSI: your child is under 18, has a severe disability, and your family’s income and resources fall below SSI limits. No parent work history required.¹

Applying on a Parent’s Work Record (Title II)

Section 202(d) of the Social Security Act sets the ground rules: unmarried child, under 18, or under 19 and in school full-time.² The parent must currently be drawing retirement or disability benefits, or must have died with enough credits. The application is Form SSA-4, “Application for Child’s Insurance Benefits.”³ You can begin online at ssa.gov/apply, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or by visiting your local field office.⁴

A child of a living worker receives 50% of that parent’s Primary Insurance Amount; a child of a deceased worker receives 75%. These payments are subject to a family maximum that reduces each person’s check proportionally when totals hit the cap.⁵⁶

If your child is already 18 or older and has been disabled since before age 22, you’re applying for DAC benefits on the same parent’s record. The claim uses the adult disability standard, which asks whether the person can perform substantial gainful activity — $1,690 per month in 2026.⁷ Because DAC benefits terminate on most marriages, review that rule with anyone in the family before the wedding: an exception exists only if the adult child marries someone also receiving Title II benefits, and marrying an SSI-only recipient does not preserve the check.²

Applying for SSI for a Child

You cannot file a child’s SSI claim online. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local Social Security office to start the process.¹ SSI has two gates. First, medical: the child must have a physical or mental impairment, or combination of impairments, causing “marked and severe functional limitations” expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.⁸ The condition doesn’t have to appear word-for-word in Social Security’s childhood Listing of Impairments, but it must be medically equivalent or produce functional limitations that meet the standard.⁹

Second, financial. Because SSI is needs-based, Social Security “deems” a portion of parents’ income and resources to a child living at home. Stepparent income counts when the biological or adoptive parent also lives in the household. TANF payments and VA pensions are excluded from deeming, and the family home and one vehicle are excluded from resource counting.¹⁰ The maximum federal SSI payment for an eligible individual in 2026 is $994 per month, and many states add a supplement.¹¹ In most states, SSI eligibility also opens the door to Medicaid.

What to Have Ready Before You File

The claims that stall are usually the ones filed with incomplete records. Pull the following together first:

Social Security numbers for the child and the parent whose record supports the claim.
A certified birth certificate showing the child’s age and the parent-child relationship.
Names, addresses, and phone numbers of every doctor, clinic, and hospital that has treated the child, along with visit dates, lab results, and imaging.
A complete medication list with dosages and the reason for each prescription.
Records from speech, physical, occupational, or behavioral therapy, including frequency of sessions.
School records, teacher evaluations, and any Individualized Education Program (IEP). These show how the child functions among peers in a structured setting, which the SSA weighs heavily.

For any disability claim, you’ll also complete the Child Disability Report, Form SSA-3820-BK, which asks in detail about the condition, daily activities, and treatment history.¹² Filling it out thoroughly before your appointment saves callbacks.

What Happens After You File

Your local field office handles the non-medical side: verifying the parent’s work credits, the child’s age, and marital status. If the claim clears that screen, the file goes to your state’s Disability Determination Services (DDS), a state-run agency funded by Social Security whose medical and psychological consultants decide whether the child meets the disability standard.¹³

If your medical evidence leaves gaps, DDS will schedule a consultative examination with a doctor it selects and pays for. Attend it. Missing the appointment without good cause can lead to denial for failure to cooperate. Initial decisions typically take several months, longer if consultative exams or extra records are needed. You’ll get the answer in a written notice explaining the decision and, if approved, the monthly amount and start date.

Faster Handling for Severe Conditions

Two mechanisms can pull a strong case out of the standard queue. Flag either one when you apply.

Compassionate Allowances

Social Security keeps a published list of conditions so severe they can be approved quickly with minimal medical evidence. Childhood conditions on the list include Down syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Dravet syndrome, Batten disease, several childhood cancers such as neuroblastoma with distant metastases and lymphoblastic lymphoma, bilateral retinoblastoma, and dozens of rare genetic and neurological disorders.¹⁴

Presumptive Disability Payments

On SSI claims, Social Security can begin paying before DDS finishes its review. These presumptive payments run up to six months and do not have to be repaid even if the claim is later denied. Conditions that can trigger presumptive payments for a child include:

Down syndrome.
Total blindness or total deafness.
Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or muscular atrophy with marked difficulty walking, speaking, or using the hands.
Severe intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder with complete inability to independently handle basic self-care in a child at least 4 years old.
Low birth weight below 1,200 grams in a child under one year.
Terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less.
ALS.¹⁵

If the Claim Is Denied

Initial denial rates are high, and a denial is not the end of the case. Four levels of appeal follow, and you must request each one within 60 days of the denial notice.¹⁶¹⁷

Reconsideration by a different reviewer, who looks at the full file plus any new evidence.
Hearing before an administrative law judge, either in person or by video, where many previously denied claims are overturned.
Appeals Council review, which checks the judge’s decision for legal errors.
Federal district court, filed as a lawsuit.

If the notice does not clearly state what was missing, call Social Security or visit the field office and ask. Knowing exactly why the claim failed tells you what records, testing, or evaluations to add before the next round.

Plan Now for the Age-18 Review

Worth knowing at the application stage: if your child qualifies for SSI as a minor, Social Security will redetermine eligibility at age 18 using the adult disability standard rather than the childhood functional-limitations test. Some children who qualified as minors do not qualify as adults.¹ Deeming also ends at 18, so a child previously denied because of household income may become eligible on their own. Keep medical evidence current as that birthday approaches, because the redetermination file is only as strong as the records in it.
