To apply for SSDI as a veteran, file an Application for Disability Insurance Benefits (Form SSA-16) together with an Adult Disability Report (Form SSA-3368) through ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at your local Social Security office, and flag any 100% Permanent and Total VA rating or post-9/11 service-connected disability so your claim is routed for expedited processing. Military service counts toward the work history SSDI requires, and active-duty pay is taxed under FICA the same as civilian wages, so most veterans already have the credits. What trips people up is the medical side of the application and the assumption that a VA rating carries over. It doesn’t. Social Security applies its own standard, and roughly two out of three initial claims are denied,1Social Security Administration. Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program – Section 4 so the paperwork matters.
Do You Qualify
SSDI has two gates: enough work credits, and a medical condition severe enough to prevent you from working for at least 12 consecutive months or expected to result in death.2Social Security Administration. How Does Someone Become Eligible Unlike the VA, Social Security doesn’t assign partial percentages. The question is binary: can you perform substantial work, or can’t you?
The agency measures that through Substantial Gainful Activity. If your monthly earnings in 2026 exceed $1,690 (or $2,830 if you’re blind), the SSA treats you as capable of working and your claim ends there.3Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity
On work credits, you earn up to four per year. In 2026, each $1,890 in covered earnings equals one credit, so $7,560 caps you out.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Credits and Benefit Eligibility If you’re 31 or older when your disability begins, you generally need 40 credits total, with at least 20 in the ten years before onset.5Social Security Administration. How You Earn Credits Younger applicants need fewer.
If you served between 1957 and 2001, check your earnings record for special extra credited earnings. Active-duty service from 1957 through 1977 added $300 per calendar quarter; from 1978 through 2001, an extra $100 for every $300 in active-duty basic pay, capped at $1,200 a year.6Social Security Administration. Special Extra Earnings for Military Service Congress ended the bonus credits in January 2002, but earlier service still gets the boost.
Get Your Claim Expedited
Standard SSDI decisions take six to eight months.7Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits Two fast-track programs cut that down for veterans, and using either one starts with flagging your status when you file.
The first covers veterans with a VA disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent and Total. Once the SSA identifies your P&T status, the claim is treated as high-priority workload.8Social Security Administration. Expedited Processing of Veterans 100 Percent Disability Claims The rating itself does not guarantee approval; the SSA still applies its own disability standard. But you won’t wait half a year for a decision.
The second is the Wounded Warriors program, for veterans whose disability began during active military service on or after October 1, 2001.9Social Security Administration. Information for Military and Veterans It works the same way. Say so at the start of the application, in your phone interview, or in person, and bring your VA rating decision letter so the file gets routed correctly.
Documents to Gather First
Pulling everything together before you open the application prevents the back-and-forth that stretches claims out for months.
- Your DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), which the SSA lists among the documents veterans should provide.10Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits for Wounded Warriors
- Medical records from every VA medical center and private provider who has treated your disabling condition, including lab results, imaging, and a full medication list with dosages.
- Work history from the five years before your disability began, with job titles, duties, and the physical demands of each position. The SSA shortened this lookback from 15 years in a 2024 rule change.11Federal Register. Intermediate Improvement to the Disability Adjudication Process Including How We Consider Past Work
- Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, plus prior-year W-2s or tax returns.
- Your VA rating decision letter if you have a 100% P&T rating or qualify as a Wounded Warrior.
The Two Forms That Do the Work
Form SSA-16, the Application for Disability Insurance Benefits, captures your personal information, employment and earnings history, marital status, dependents, and direct deposit details.12Social Security Administration. Application for Disability Insurance Benefits
Form SSA-3368, the Adult Disability Report, is where you describe your medical conditions and explain how they keep you from working.13Social Security Administration. Disability Report – Adult This is where veterans lose claims they should have won. Don’t use military jargon. Don’t list an MOS code and assume the examiner understands what the job entailed. Describe the actual physical tasks: how much weight you carried, how far you walked, how many hours you stood on a shift. If the work involved cognitive demands like analyzing intelligence or coordinating logistics under pressure, write that out too. List contact information for every VA clinic that has treated you so the SSA can request records directly.
If you held more than one job in the five-year lookback period, you may also need Form SSA-3369, the Work History Report, which asks for a detailed breakdown of each position’s duties and physical requirements.14Social Security Administration. Work History Report – Form SSA-3369-BK
How to File
You have three options. The online application at ssa.gov/applyfordisability is generally the fastest and lets you save your progress across sessions with a re-entry number, which matters because assembling all the medical detail in one sitting is unrealistic for most people.15Social Security Administration. Apply Online for Disability Benefits
You can also call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule a phone interview, or visit your local Social Security office in person. In a phone or in-person appointment, a claims representative enters your answers into the system and can clarify confusing questions as you go. Whichever channel you use, keep the confirmation receipt with your filing date. That date establishes when the claim officially begins, which affects how far back any retroactive payments can reach.
What Happens After You File
Your local Social Security office first verifies the non-medical requirements like work credits and age. The file then goes to your state’s Disability Determination Services, where medical examiners and physicians review your evidence against the federal disability standard.16Social Security Administration. Disability Determination Process
If your records leave gaps, the SSA may schedule a Consultative Examination at no cost to you.17Social Security Administration. Consultative Examination Guidelines Go to it. Failing to appear is treated as lack of cooperation and can result in a denial on that basis alone.
The examiner also considers your age, education, and past work when deciding whether you could realistically shift to a different job. Veterans over 50 generally have an easier time qualifying under these vocational rules, because the agency recognizes that career changes become harder with age. Once the review is complete, the SSA mails a Notice of Decision explaining the outcome, the reasoning, and, if approved, your monthly benefit amount and start date.
The Waiting Period and Back Pay
Approval doesn’t mean immediate payment. Federal law imposes a five-month waiting period from your established onset date, and your first check arrives in the sixth full month after that date.18Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits – You Are Approved The only exception is for applicants diagnosed with ALS, who have no waiting period.
If your disability began well before you applied, you may be owed retroactive benefits. The SSA can pay up to 12 months of back benefits before your application date, provided the five-month waiting period had already run during that stretch. Many veterans hold off filing while their VA claim is pending, and that delay costs money. File as soon as your condition prevents you from working, even if the VA side isn’t resolved.
SSDI and VA Compensation Don’t Offset
Receiving VA disability compensation does not reduce your SSDI payment. The two programs are independent, and you can collect the full amount from both. SGA looks only at earned income, and VA disability payments are not earned income.
One boundary: this is not true for Supplemental Security Income, a separate needs-based program. VA compensation counts as income for SSI, and it can reduce or eliminate SSI eligibility. SSDI is different, and it stacks with VA compensation without penalty.
Family Benefits and Medicare
Your spouse and children may qualify for auxiliary benefits on your SSDI record. A spouse can receive benefits if they are at least 62 or caring for your child who is under 16 or disabled.19Social Security Administration. Benefits for Spouses Unmarried children can qualify if they are under 18, between 18 and 19 and still in high school, or 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22.20Social Security Administration. Benefits for Children Each eligible family member can receive up to 50% of your benefit, subject to a family maximum.
After 24 months of SSDI, you become eligible for Medicare regardless of age.21Medicare.gov. I Am Getting Social Security Benefits Before 65 For veterans already using VA healthcare, Medicare adds an option for care at non-VA facilities.
If You’re Denied
About 65% of initial SSDI applications are denied.1Social Security Administration. Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program – Section 4 The number is discouraging, but odds improve substantially on appeal. Each level has a 60-day filing deadline from the date you receive the prior decision (the SSA assumes receipt five days after the date printed on the notice), and missing it means starting over unless you can show good cause.
The first step is reconsideration, where a different DDS examiner reviews the file from scratch. File within 60 days using Form SSA-561, and submit any new medical evidence that strengthens your case.22Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration
If reconsideration fails, request a hearing before an administrative law judge. This is where most successful claims are won; the hearing-level approval rate is roughly 58%. The wait averages 7 to 11 months depending on location.23Social Security Administration. Average Wait Time Until Hearing Held Report Beyond the hearing, you can ask the Appeals Council to review the judge’s decision, and after that, file a civil suit in federal district court. Very few claims reach federal court.
Most SSDI representatives work on contingency and collect a fee only if you win. The SSA caps representative fees at 25% of your back pay or $9,200 in 2026, whichever is lower, and withholds the fee directly from your lump sum. Costs for obtaining medical records sit outside that cap and may be billed to you regardless of outcome. A representative who works both SSDI and VA disability can translate your military medical records into the language SSA examiners expect, and can spot evidence gaps before they turn into a denial.
