How to Apply for a US Visa in Barbados: DS-160, Fees, Interview

To apply for a U.S. visa in Barbados, you complete the DS-160 online, pay the $185 application fee, schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown through the U.S. Travel Docs portal, and appear in person with your passport, DS-160 confirmation, and documents showing you intend to return home. Interview slots for B-1/B-2 visitor visas are generally available within two weeks, and Barbadian citizens who are approved usually receive a visa valid for 10 years.

Who Applies at the Bridgetown Embassy

The U.S. Embassy at Wildey Business Park in St. Michael is the only post processing nonimmigrant visas for Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.¹ Everyone interviews in person in Bridgetown, so residents of the other islands need to plan travel.

If you need a Barbados entry visa to attend, the Barbados Immigration Department asks that you apply at least three weeks before your embassy appointment and include a copy of the appointment letter with your application.²

Consular officers tend to scrutinize applications more closely when the applicant lives outside the consular district. If you’re applying from farther afield, be ready to explain why you chose Bridgetown and bring extra documentation showing your ties to your home country.³

Complete the DS-160 Online

The DS-160 is the standard nonimmigrant visa application, filed electronically through the Department of State’s Consular Electronic Application Center. Before you open the form, gather your passport, travel itinerary, employment and education history, and the dates of your last five U.S. visits if you have any. Student applicants (F or M) need their SEVIS ID from Form I-20, and petition-based workers (H, L, O, P) should have their I-129 petition on hand.⁴

Social Media Accounts

The form asks you to list every social media platform and username you’ve used in the past five years, covering Facebook, Instagram, X, and other named platforms. Missing an account, even a dormant one, can be treated as misrepresentation. Review your accounts before you sit down so you can list them accurately.

Photo Requirements

You need a digital photograph taken within the last six months against a plain white or off-white background, showing your full face with a neutral expression and both eyes open. Eyeglasses are not allowed except in rare cases with documented medical necessity.⁵ The photo uploads with the DS-160.

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for travel to the United States. The general rule requires validity extending at least six months beyond your intended stay, but Barbadian citizens are exempt and only need a passport valid through the planned period of stay.⁶ Citizens of other OECS countries should check the CBP exemption list, since not all are included.

After you submit the form, print the DS-160 confirmation page with its barcode. You’ll need it at every subsequent step, and the embassy cannot pull up your application without it.⁴

Pay the Application Fee

The non-refundable Machine Readable Visa fee is $185 for B-1/B-2 visitor visas and other non-petition categories such as F student and J exchange visitor visas.⁷ Petition-based work visa categories carry different fees. You pay regardless of whether the visa is ultimately approved.

To pay, register an account on the U.S. Travel Docs portal. The system offers local payment options including bank deposits and online payment. You can’t book an interview until the payment clears, which typically takes a day or two.

Book the Interview and Prepare Documents

Once the fee is confirmed, use U.S. Travel Docs to pick an appointment. As of early 2026, Bridgetown slots for B-1/B-2 applicants are generally available within two weeks, though wait times shift by season, so check the State Department’s global wait time page before you buy flights.⁸

Bring your valid passport, your printed DS-160 confirmation page, and your fee payment receipt. Beyond those essentials, bring documents that show you plan to come home: employment letters, recent bank statements, property records, school enrollment letters. There’s no fixed checklist, so think about what tells the clearest story of your ties to your home country.

Embassy security matches airport screening. Mobile phones, laptops, cameras, and other electronics are prohibited inside the consular section, and there’s no storage on site. Leave them at your hotel or with someone waiting outside. Bags larger than a small purse are banned, along with food, drinks, weapons, and aerosol sprays. Don’t arrive more than 15 minutes before your appointment time.

Inside, you’ll be fingerprinted digitally and then interview briefly with a consular officer. The officer is deciding whether you’ve overcome the legal presumption of immigrant intent set by Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, meaning U.S. law assumes every nonimmigrant applicant secretly wants to stay until you prove otherwise.⁹ Answer directly. If a question isn’t clear, ask the officer to rephrase.

When You Can Skip the Interview

If you’re renewing a B-1, B-2, or B-1/B-2 visa that expired within the last 12 months, you may qualify for the Interview Waiver Program. To be eligible you must meet all of these conditions:

Your previous visa was a full-validity B-1, B-2, or B-1/B-2 issued when you were at least 18.
That visa expired no more than 12 months ago.
You are a citizen or legal resident of Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, or certain other listed territories including Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, and Montserrat.
You have never had a visa refused (unless the refusal was later overcome or waived), and you have no apparent ineligibility.

H-2A agricultural worker renewals within 12 months of expiration also qualify under similar conditions. Bridgetown does not exempt applicants under 14 or over 79 from interviews, which differs from some other posts. A consular officer can still require an in-person interview even if you otherwise qualify.¹⁰

Emergency Appointments

If you have a genuine emergency, the embassy may move your interview date up. Qualifying situations include a funeral, a medical emergency, or a school start date you’d otherwise miss, and you’ll need documentation of the urgency. You must first submit the DS-160, pay the fee, and book the earliest regular appointment available before requesting an expedite.¹¹ Weddings, graduations, business conferences, and last-minute vacations don’t qualify.

What the Decision Looks Like

The officer tells you the outcome at the end of the interview. There are three possibilities.

Approval. The embassy keeps your passport for visa printing. Processing takes at least 7 to 10 business days, and the embassy warns that longer waits happen.³ Barbadian citizens typically receive a B-1/B-2 valid for 10 years under the reciprocity schedule.¹² Validity for other nationalities in the district varies.

Refusal under Section 214(b). The officer wasn’t persuaded you’d return home. This is the most common denial reason for nonimmigrant applications. It applies only to that specific application, not to you permanently, and there is no formal appeal. You can reapply at any time with a new DS-160 and a new fee, but you’ll need to show something meaningful has changed, such as a new job, stronger financial ties, or a different purpose of travel.¹³

Administrative processing. Sometimes the officer can’t finish the decision at the window and needs more time to review. There’s no standard timeline, and your passport is usually retained during this period.¹⁴

Getting Your Passport Back

The embassy uses DHL as its courier. If you live in Barbados, you can pick up your passport at no charge from the DHL Head Office at the Airport Commercial Center on Pilgrim Road in Christchurch, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.¹⁵

If you live on another Eastern Caribbean island, you can pay for Premium Delivery Service to have your documents shipped to one of 12 designated DHL locations in the region, or collect them free at the Barbados office. Non-resident applicants who are approved must stay in Barbados until their passport is returned; the embassy will not mail passports outside Barbados for out-of-district applicants.³
