To amend your tax return, file Form 1040-X, the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, which uses a three-column layout to show your original numbers, the changes, and the corrected figures. You generally have three years from the date you filed the original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, to file and claim a refund.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund If you owe additional tax instead, file as soon as you can, because interest and penalties accrue from the original due date.
When You Actually Need to Amend
Not every mistake calls for a 1040-X. The IRS catches basic math errors on its own and sends a notice (commonly CP11, CP12, or CP13) explaining the adjustment; you have 60 days to dispute it if you disagree, but you don’t file an amended return over an arithmetic fix. If the IRS sends Letter 12C asking for a missing form or schedule, the letter itself tells you not to file a 1040-X. Just send the requested documents within 20 days.2Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 12C
You do need to amend when the change is something the IRS wouldn’t know about: unreported income from a late W-2 or 1099, a filing status you want to correct, deductions or credits you missed, or dependents you need to add or remove. If you underreported income, amending voluntarily before the IRS contacts you can reduce penalties and shows good faith.
Filing Deadlines
The refund deadline is three years from when you filed the original return or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund File early, in February, say, and your return is treated as filed on the due date (usually April 15), so the three-year clock starts there. If you had an extension to October 15 but actually filed on July 1, the clock starts on July 1.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
One exception worth knowing: if you’re claiming a deduction for a bad debt or a worthless security, you get seven years from the original return’s due date rather than three.4Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund
There’s no deadline for filing an amendment that shows you owe more tax, but the sooner you file, the less interest you’ll owe. If you file the amended return before the original due date (including extensions), the IRS treats it as a superseding return that simply replaces the original, which can help you avoid penalties altogether.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Gather First
Pull your original return so you have a baseline for every number. Then collect whatever triggered the change: a corrected W-2, a late 1099, receipts for a missed deduction, documentation for a new credit. If you’re amending to claim a credit, attach the supporting form or schedule for it (Schedule EIC for the Earned Income Credit, for example, or the relevant form for education or child tax credits).3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
When your changes affect a specific schedule, redo that schedule in full. Correcting itemized deductions means a new Schedule A. Business income changes require reworking Schedule C. Revised investment income means a new Schedule B.6Internal Revenue Service. Schedules for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR For paper filings, attach a complete corrected Form 1040 (or 1040-SR or 1040-NR) with all affected schedules to your 1040-X. Incomplete submissions get sent back.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
File a separate Form 1040-X for each year you need to correct. Multiple years can’t go on one form.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025)
Filling In the Three Columns
Form 1040-X lays the math out in three columns so the change is visible on every line.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X Instructions for Form 1040-X
Column A holds your original figures. If the IRS already adjusted your return or you already amended it once, use the most recent adjusted numbers here instead.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025) Column B shows the net change on each line, positive for added income or reduced deductions, negative for the opposite. Column C is Column A plus or minus Column B; on any line you aren’t changing, carry the Column A figure straight across.
The IRS gives this example: you originally reported $21,000 in adjusted gross income, then received a W-2 for $500 you’d left out. Column A shows $21,000, Column B shows $500, and Column C shows $21,500.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025)
Part II of the form asks for a plain-language explanation of each change. Be specific. “Received corrected W-2 from employer showing additional $500 in wages” is useful. “Discovered overlooked charitable contribution of $1,200 to [organization]” is useful. A clear explanation cuts down on follow-up questions from the IRS.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X Instructions for Form 1040-X

Paying What You Owe
Pay when you file. IRS Direct Pay transfers funds from a checking or savings account at no cost.13Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help For paper filers, include a check or money order payable to “United States Treasury” with your Social Security number, the tax year, and “Form 1040-X” written on it so the payment lands in the right account.
Interest and Penalties If You Owe More
If the amendment shows an underpayment, interest has been running on it since the original filing deadline, not since the date of the amendment. For the first quarter of 2026, the IRS charges individual underpayment interest at 7% per year, compounded daily, and adjusts the rate quarterly.14Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026
On top of interest, the failure-to-pay penalty adds half a percent of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month it stays outstanding, up to 25%.15Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest If the original understatement was large (more than 10% of the tax that should have been reported, or more than $5,000, whichever is greater), you could also face a 20% accuracy-related penalty on the underpaid amount.16Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty Coming forward voluntarily makes accuracy penalties considerably less likely.

Your State Return Changes Too
A federal change almost always affects your state tax bill, and the IRS won’t tell your state for you.18Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Most states require a separate amended state return with its own deadline, commonly 30 to 90 days after a federal change becomes final, though some states allow up to 180 days.
