How to Add Schools to FAFSA, Even After Submitting

To add a school to your FAFSA after submitting, sign in to StudentAid.gov with your FSA ID, open your submitted form, choose “Add or Remove Schools” from the Actions menu, enter the new school’s six-digit Federal School Code, then sign and resubmit. The 2026–2027 FAFSA lets you list up to 20 schools at once, so most applicants can add without removing anything. Online corrections typically post within one to three business days.1Federal Student Aid. I Submitted My FAFSA Form – What Happens Now

What to Have Ready

Two things before you start: your FSA ID (the username and password you created when you first filed, which also serves as your electronic signature) and the six-digit Federal School Code for each school you want to add. You can look up any participating school’s code on StudentAid.gov by name or location.2Federal Student Aid. Select Colleges and Career Schools

When you add a new school, the form also asks for a housing plan for that institution: On Campus, Off Campus (not with parents), or With Parent.3Federal Student Aid. If you changed anything in a contributor’s section (a parent’s or spouse’s data, for example), that contributor has to log in with their own FSA ID and re-sign before the correction is complete.5Federal Student Aid. If You Already Have 20 Schools Listed

The FAFSA caps the active list at 20. To add a 21st, you have to remove one to make room, and you choose which. A school you remove keeps whatever data it already downloaded before the change, but it won’t receive anything new you submit afterward.4Federal Student Aid. Applying to more than 20 schools works the same way, in rounds. List your first 20 and submit. Once those schools have pulled your data, swap out ones that already received it and add the next batch in their place. Repeat until every school on your list has been sent your information.
