Your AF Form 526 point credit summary lives inside the virtual Military Personnel Flight (vMPF) on the Air Force Portal at my.af.mil. The Air Force stopped mailing paper copies years ago, so the electronic record — which Headquarters RIO labels the Points Credit Summary, or PCARS — is now the only version you can pull.1U.S. Air Force. Logging In and Finding the Summary
Sign in to the Air Force Portal with your CAC, open vMPF, and go to the Record Review/Update section.3162nd Wing. Online Personnel Services for ANG Members From there you can view and print every page of the summary. Save a PDF at least once a year, ideally right after your Retention/Retirement year closes out. The electronic record can be updated or corrected at any point, so keeping your own dated copies gives you a baseline if a discrepancy shows up years later. Reconstructing evidence for a drill weekend you attended six years ago is a lot harder without a personal archive.
What Each Line Shows
Every line on the summary covers one Retention/Retirement (R/R) year, running from the anniversary of the date you entered service. Within each year the form breaks your points down by source so you can see how the credit was built.
- Membership points: 15 awarded automatically each year for belonging to a reserve component.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 12732 – Entitlement to Retired Pay: Computation of Years of Service
- Inactive Duty Training (IDT) points: one point per drill or equivalent instruction period, covering regular weekend drills and additional training periods.
- Active Duty points: one point per day of active service, including annual tours, mobilizations, deployments, and full-time schools.
- Extension course and correspondence points: earned through authorized distance learning.
- Funeral Honors Duty points: one per day of funeral honors of at least two hours, unless you were already earning credit under another category that day.
You’ll also see two separate annual totals: Total Points for Retirement Pay and Total Points for Longevity. The retirement pay figure feeds your pension calculation. The longevity figure sets your years-of-service placement on the military pay scale. They can differ, because they follow different rules about annual caps.
Reading the Summary for Qualifying Years
An R/R year counts as a satisfactory or qualifying year only if you earn at least 50 points during that period, and the mix does not matter — 50 points from drills alone qualifies a year just as well as a mix of active duty and membership credit.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 12732 – Entitlement to Retired Pay: Computation of Years of Service5Headquarters RIO. Participation Requirements Membership alone gives you 15, so you need 35 more from drills, active duty, or courses in a typical year.
Non-regular retirement eligibility requires 20 qualifying years.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 12731 – Age and Service Requirements A year that falls short of 50 points cannot be made up later. That’s the single biggest reason to open the summary annually: a missing drill or unposted set of orders can turn a qualifying year into a non-qualifying one, and you want to catch it while the paperwork still exists.
Annual Caps That Affect Your Pay
The maximum you can earn in one retirement year is 365 points (366 in a leap year). Of those, no more than 130 can come from inactive duty sources like drills and correspondence courses.7MyAirForceBenefits. Retired Pay for Airmen and Guardians Active duty points are not subject to the 130-day inactive cap but still count against the 365 ceiling. The 130-day inactive limit applies to R/R years that include October 30, 2007, and later; earlier periods used lower caps of 60, 75, or 90 days depending on the era.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 12733 – Computation of Retired Pay
These caps govern the retirement pay calculation. Points above the cap still appear on your summary for longevity purposes, but the pay formula ignores them.
What Each Point Is Worth
Reserve retired pay uses a set formula. Divide your total career retirement points by 360 to get creditable years of service, then multiply that number by 2.5 percent to get your pay multiplier.9Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Reserve Retirement That multiplier is applied to your retired pay base, which under the High-36 plan is the average of the highest 36 months of basic pay to which you were entitled.
A worked example: 4,200 career points divided by 360 gives 11.67 creditable years. At 2.5 percent, the multiplier is 29.17 percent. Against a High-36 average of $6,000 per month, gross retired pay comes out to roughly $1,750 per month. Every point is worth about $0.42 per month at that pay level. Small clerical errors add up quickly across a career, which is why chasing down missing points is worth the paperwork.
Fixing Errors on the Summary
Missing drill weekends, unposted active duty tours, and correspondence courses that never made it into the system are the usual problems. ARPC advises members to report discrepancies within 30 days of discovering them and to provide documentation of the correct service.10Air Force Reserve Command. The strongest evidence for a missing active duty period is a DD Form 214 for that tour. Reservists receive a DD-214 for each period of active service greater than 90 days, and a DD-214-1 documenting total career points and service at separation or retirement.13United States Navy Reserve. When the Summary Really Matters
Once you complete your 20th qualifying year, ARPC issues a Notification of Eligibility for Retired Pay, commonly called the 20-year letter or NERP, roughly 120 days after that R/R year closes out.14Air Reserve Personnel Center. Notification of Eligibility for Retired Pay (20 Year Letter) ARPC notifies you by mail with instructions to retrieve the letter and a Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan package through the virtual Personnel Center dashboard. The 20-year letter is your official proof of eligibility. Keep it somewhere you can find it a decade or two later.
When you reach your eligibility age, you apply for retired pay using DD Form 108. That application asks for your total retirement points for each period of service, drawn directly from your point credit summary.15Louisiana National Guard. Application for Retired Pay Benefits Any error still sitting on the summary at that point rolls straight into the pay calculation. Cleaning up discrepancies now, while orders and LES copies are still findable, is a lot easier than resolving them during the application.
