How old of an RV can you finance depends on the lender, but most banks and online lenders cap it at 10 to 15 model years, while a handful of credit unions and specialty RV lenders stretch to 20. Past that, you’re generally looking at an unsecured personal loan or paying cash. Where you fall inside those limits comes down to whether the RV is motorized or towable, your credit, your down payment, and the condition of the specific unit.1Alliant Credit Union. Typical Age Cutoffs by Lender
No single rule covers the industry, but a pattern holds. Alliant Credit Union requires financed RVs to be no more than 15 model years old, with fewer than 75,000 miles on motorized units.1Alliant Credit Union. RV Loans Good Sam Finance Center finances standard RVs up to 20 years old and takes on niche categories like bus conversions and Class B and C conversions that mainstream banks exclude.2Good Sam Finance Center. Questions About RV Loans
The cutoff tracks model year, not purchase date. A 2008 motorhome shopped in 2026 is 18 model years old, which puts it outside the window at most conventional lenders. If you’re close to a cutoff, apply sooner rather than later. Every January the math moves against you.
How Age Shortens Your Term and Raises Your Rate
Lenders don’t just approve or deny on age. They also compress the repayment window. A nearly new RV within the last five model years can qualify for terms up to 20 years with strong credit and a loan amount above $100,000.3USAA. RV Loans and Financing Rates Units from roughly 2015 to 2019 typically get 10 to 15 years. RVs from 2010 to 2014 are often capped at 5 to 10 years. Older than that, you’re usually looking at a personal loan with a 3- to 7-year payback.
Shorter terms mean higher monthly payments on the same balance. A $40,000 loan over 15 years is manageable; compressed to 5 years, the payment roughly triples. Rates climb with age too. Secured RV loans on newer units start in the low-to-mid 6% range for borrowers with excellent credit, while personal loans used to buy RVs that no longer qualify for secured financing run from about 9% to 25%.4U.S. Bank. How to Buy a Used RV With a Personal Loan Federal law requires every lender to disclose the total cost of credit as an annual percentage rate, so you can compare offers on even ground regardless of how fees are structured.5eCFR. 12 CFR Part 226 – Truth in Lending (Regulation Z)
Motorhomes vs. Travel Trailers
Motorhomes (Class A, B, and C) tend to face tighter age limits than travel trailers and fifth wheels. The reason is mechanical risk. A diesel pusher with 100,000 miles carries the possibility of an engine rebuild costing $18,000 to $35,000, with a full replacement running $40,000 to $55,000. Lenders price that risk in, and many require a specialized mechanical inspection before approving a motorhome older than about 12 years.
Towables have more room because there’s no engine, transmission, or drivetrain to fail. A lender looking at a 15-year-old fifth wheel is mostly concerned with roof condition, water damage, and the structural integrity of the frame and slide-outs. Some lenders will go to 20 years on a towable if the unit checks out on inspection. That’s still not easy money, but the conversation with the underwriter starts in a very different place than it does for a motorhome with a quarter-million miles.
Down Payment and Credit Score on an Older RV
Most RV lenders want 10% to 20% down on a used unit. For RVs older than 10 years, expect the higher end of that range or above. A larger down payment reduces the lender’s exposure on a depreciating asset and lowers your loan-to-value ratio, which is often the deciding factor on borderline files.
Credit requirements tighten with age too. The practical floor to get any RV loan is around 600, but below 680 your options shrink fast. Some lenders won’t work with you at all under that line, and those that will charge noticeably higher rates. If your score sits in the low 600s and you’re looking at an older RV, the math may not work. A few months of credit repair before applying can save you thousands over the life of the loan.
Where to Finance an Older RV
Credit Unions
Credit unions are often the best place to start for an older unit. As member-owned institutions, they tend to have more flexibility than national banks to weigh a specific RV’s condition rather than reject it on model year alone. Federal credit unions operate under a general 12-year loan maturity limit, with provisions allowing longer terms for certain secured loans.6National Credit Union Administration. Recreational Vehicles as Mobile Homes in NCUA Lending Rule The NCUA itself cautions that safety and soundness may argue against extended maturities for RVs with short remaining useful lives, but the framework gives credit unions room to structure terms that work.

Unsecured Personal Loans
When the RV is too old for any secured lender, a personal loan sidesteps the age question entirely. The lender takes no lien on the title, so the vehicle’s age and condition become irrelevant to approval. The tradeoff is cost: personal loan rates for this purpose run from about 9% to 25% depending on your credit, compared to 6% to 8% for a secured loan on a newer RV.4U.S. Bank. How to Buy a Used RV With a Personal Loan Repayment windows are shorter too, typically 3 to 7 years. For a well-maintained 25-year-old Airstream at $15,000, a personal loan may be the only realistic path.
What the Lender Will Ask For
Documentation runs heavier on an older RV than on a new one coming off a dealer lot. At minimum you’ll provide the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number so the lender can pull a history report. Motorized units require an exact odometer reading, which the underwriter uses to estimate remaining powertrain life. Lenders establish a base market price through the J.D. Power valuation tool (formerly NADA Guides for RVs), which you can check yourself by entering the year, make, and model at their consumer portal.8J.D. Power. New RV Prices and Used RV Values
Most lenders also want detailed photographs of the interior, exterior, and especially the roof to verify the unit is free from water damage or rot. Tire age matters more than people expect. Manufacturers recommend replacing RV tires after six to eight years regardless of tread depth, because aging rubber becomes a blowout risk.9Continental AG. Check Out Your Tires Before Camper Season Begins Some lenders factor imminent tire replacement into the approval decision or require it before funding.
Independent Inspection
For older units, an independent inspection can make or break the deal. The National RV Inspectors Association publishes standards of practice covering roof seals, slide-out systems, propane leak testing, electrical systems, and chassis condition.10National RV Inspectors Association. NRVIA Standards of Practice An NRVIA-certified inspector produces a written report lenders recognize, and it gives you leverage. If the inspection turns up a failing water heater or leaking seals, you can negotiate the price down before committing. Spending $400 to $600 on an inspection before buying a 15-year-old motorhome is cheap insurance.
Full-Time Living Can Disqualify You
Many RV lenders include a “pleasure use” or “recreational use” clause expecting you to have a separate primary residence. Full-time RVers present a higher risk because there’s no fixed address tied to the borrower, which makes repossession harder, and the unit sees heavier wear. Some lenders flatly refuse to finance borrowers who don’t own or rent a home. Good Sam, for one, excludes full-timers from its loan programs, so read the eligibility rules before applying.7Good Sam Finance Center. RV Loans from Good Sam
If you plan to live in the RV full-time, line up financing while you still have a conventional address, and be honest about your intended use on the application. Misrepresenting it gives the lender grounds to cancel the contract and demand immediate repayment of the balance.
