The skydiving age limit in the UK is 16 for both tandem jumps and solo training, set by British Skydiving as the sport’s national governing body. If you’re 16 or 17, you’ll also need written consent from a parent or legal guardian, and that adult usually needs to be at the drop zone on the day to witness your medical declaration. There is no upper age limit for tandem jumps, but solo training courses normally close off at 55.
Minimum Age for a Tandem Jump
A tandem skydive, where you’re harnessed to a qualified instructor who flies the parachute, is what most first-timers book. British Skydiving’s Operations Manual states that no one under 16 may take part in any form of skydiver training, tandem jumps included.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 The Form 106 Membership Agreement that every first-time jumper signs confirms the same minimum.2British Skydiving. Form 106 – Membership Agreement
Sixteen is an absolute floor. No drop zone in the UK will let a younger jumper board the aircraft, whatever the parents say and whatever the country you’ve seen younger teenagers jump in.
Is There an Upper Age Limit?
For tandem skydiving, no fixed upper limit applies. The Operations Manual notes that “higher age limits for Student Tandem Skydivers may be acceptable,” and points older jumpers to the appropriate medical paperwork.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 In practice, many centres ask jumpers over about 70 to bring a doctor’s certificate rather than self-declaring fitness. Whether you can jump comes down to health, not birthday.
Solo training is different. Courses like Static Line or Accelerated Freefall carry both a lower and an upper age. The Operations Manual states that no one under 16 or aged 55 and over will “normally” be permitted to begin solo skydiver training.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 The word “normally” leaves room: someone 55 or older with previous recorded experience on ram-air parachutes may be accepted, but that call sits with the drop zone.
Parental Consent at 16 or 17
If you’re 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must give written consent before you begin any training or make any jump. The Operations Manual requires that adult to sign both the Membership Agreement (Form 106) and the relevant medical declaration form.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024
Your parent or guardian also has to witness the medical declaration, which generally means they need to be there in person on the day to sign at the drop zone.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 A pre-signed form sent along in your bag will not do. Turn up without the right paperwork or without the adult present, and you won’t jump that day, so sort it well ahead of the booking.
Bring photo ID as well. Passport or provisional driving licence is the usual proof of age, and staff will check it before letting you kit up.
Being Old Enough Is Not the Only Test
Age gets you through the door; fitness decides whether you jump. British Skydiving requires every skydiver to hold either a completed self-declaration of fitness or a doctor’s medical certificate before jumping.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 The self-declaration lists conditions including epilepsy, heart problems, neurological conditions, certain types of diabetes, and recurring injuries such as shoulder dislocations. A “yes” answer doesn’t rule you out automatically; it means a doctor rather than you signs off.
The Operations Manual is also clear that anyone who doesn’t feel fully fit on the day, even with something as minor as a head cold, should not skydive until they’ve recovered.1British Skydiving. Operations Manual November 2024 You also need enough physical mobility for a tandem landing: instructors ask you to lift your legs up in front of you so their feet touch down first, and if you can’t raise your knees comfortably, that alone can stop the jump.
If You’re Not 16 Yet
There is no way around the minimum. Waiting is the only route, and 16 in the UK means 16, not “close enough with a birthday next month.”
For a gift, most centres sell tandem vouchers with a validity of several months up to a year. Buying a voucher for someone approaching their 16th birthday lets them redeem it once they’re old enough, without losing the gift to an expiry date. Check the specific voucher terms with the drop zone before you pay, because validity periods vary between centres.
