How Old Do You Have to Be to Sign for a Package?

For most deliveries, no one has to sign at all, and age never comes up. When a sender does pay for a signature, how old you have to be to sign for a package depends on which signature service they chose. Standard signature deliveries have no minimum age, so a teenager at the door can typically sign. “Adult Signature Required” packages are different: the person signing must be at least 21 and show a government-issued photo ID. Shipments containing alcohol, tobacco, or firearms carry their own age rules set by federal law.

Standard Signatures Have No Minimum Age

When a sender selects a basic signature service, the carrier just needs confirmation that someone at the address received the package. None of the major carriers publish a minimum age for standard or “direct” signature deliveries. FedEx’s Direct Signature Required service simply states that “someone at the recipient’s address must sign for the delivery,” with no age floor mentioned.1FedEx. Signature Requirements and Delivery Options In practice, a teenager answering the door can sign for a standard-signature package. The driver is confirming that a person received the item, not verifying identity or age.

Most packages don’t even reach that step. USPS authorizes letter carriers to leave parcels at their discretion if the area is secure and protected from weather and the sender hasn’t requested a signature.2USPS. What is a Waiver of Signature? What is Signature Required? FedEx drivers similarly leave packages in a safe place when no one is available.1FedEx. Signature Requirements and Delivery Options

Adult Signature Required Means 21 or Older

This is where age matters. When a sender selects “Adult Signature Required,” every major carrier enforces the same threshold: the person signing must be at least 21 years old and present a government-issued photo ID. There are no electronic workarounds and no pre-authorization to leave the package.

Senders commonly choose this service for high-end electronics, jewelry, important documents, and anything where they want proof that a responsible adult took possession.

What Counts as Acceptable ID

A driver’s license is the most common ID used, but it isn’t the only option. FedEx accepts a U.S. state ID, U.S. military ID, or U.S. passport, with passport scanning available for FedEx Ground deliveries only.5FedEx. Can I Ship an Adult Signature Required Package to Someone Without a License? USPS accepts a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued photo identification that shows the signer’s date of birth.6Federal Register. Adult Signature Services The common thread is that the ID must be government-issued, include a photo, and show your date of birth or age.

When Only the Named Recipient Can Sign

Adult Signature Required lets any qualifying adult at the address sign. Senders can also choose a stricter version that limits delivery to one specific person. USPS calls this “Adult Signature Restricted Delivery,” and it requires the signature of the named addressee or their authorized agent, who must be 21 or older and present government-issued photo ID to verify both age and identity.4United States Postal Service. Age Rules for Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms

Certain shipments carry age requirements set by federal law, not just by carrier policy. The delivery driver verifies your age by checking your ID before handing over the package.

Alcohol

Every state prohibits selling alcohol to anyone under 21. Carriers enforce this at the doorstep: the person accepting the delivery must be at least 21 and show valid photo ID. You cannot pre-authorize delivery, leave instructions to drop the package, or have someone under 21 accept it on your behalf. All three major carriers require adult signature service for alcohol shipments.

Tobacco and E-Cigarettes

Federal law raised the minimum purchase age for all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to 21 in December 2019.7U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Tobacco 21 For delivery sales, the PACT Act requires the seller to use a shipping method where the purchaser or another adult who meets the minimum legal age signs to accept the package and provides a valid government-issued photo ID at the time of delivery.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 376a – Delivery Sales The seller must also independently verify the buyer’s age through a commercial database before the order ships.

Firearms

Federal law sets different age thresholds depending on the type of firearm. A licensed dealer cannot sell a handgun or handgun ammunition to anyone under 21, while shotguns and rifles can be sold to buyers 18 and older.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 US Code 922 – Unlawful Acts Online firearm purchases are typically shipped to a licensed dealer for pickup, where the dealer handles the age verification and background check in person. Carriers also require adult signature service for firearm shipments.

High-Value Packages Can Trigger a Signature Automatically

Even if a sender doesn’t specifically request a signature, carriers may add one based on the declared value. FedEx automatically applies its Direct Signature Required service to any package with a declared value of $500 or more, and if a multi-package shipment includes even one package at that value, the requirement applies to the entire shipment.10FedEx. Service Guide 2026 Because this is a direct signature and not an adult signature, no minimum age applies. Someone at the address simply needs to be present and sign.

If You Miss a Signature Delivery

Missing a signature delivery isn’t the end of the line, but you’ll want to act quickly.

  • FedEx typically tries up to three times for signature-required packages. After a failed attempt, you’ll find a door tag with instructions. For adult signature deliveries, the package may be held at a nearby FedEx location for pickup rather than reattempted automatically.1FedEx. Signature Requirements and Delivery Options
  • UPS may make up to three delivery attempts. Packages may also be redirected to a nearby UPS Access Point location, where they’ll be held for seven calendar days before being returned.11UPS. UPS Delivery Notice
  • USPS leaves a PS Form 3849 notice, and you can schedule redelivery online using the tracking number or the barcode on the notice.

For standard signature packages, UPS lets you pre-authorize the driver to leave the package on the next attempt without a signature. That option disappears for adult signature packages, since the carrier has to verify the recipient’s age in person.11UPS. UPS Delivery Notice If you’re consistently unavailable during delivery hours, picking up the package at the carrier’s facility or an Access Point is usually the most reliable option. Bring your photo ID, especially for adult signature or age-restricted items.
