How Old Do You Have to Be to Drink in Montreal?

The legal drinking age in Montreal is 18. Quebec is one of only three Canadian provinces that sets the minimum at 18 rather than 19, so travelers arriving from Ontario, most of the rest of Canada, or the United States often find the threshold lower than they expected.1Wikipedia. Legal Drinking Age – Section: Americas The age also matches Quebec’s age of majority, the same age at which you can vote and sign contracts.

Quebec’s law prohibits the sale of alcohol to minors and bars minors from purchasing it.2Légis Québec. Act Respecting Offences Relating to Alcoholic Beverages I-8.1 Enforcement is aimed at commercial settings rather than private households.

Where You Can Buy Alcohol in Montreal

Once you’re 18, there are three main places to buy:

  • Bars and restaurants serve for on-site consumption. Most Montreal bars serve until 3 AM, later than in many North American cities.
  • Dépanneurs (corner stores) and grocery stores sell beer, cider, and certain wines to take home. They stop selling alcohol at 11 PM.
  • SAQ stores, run by the Société des alcools du Québec, handle spirits, a wider wine selection, and imported beers. Hours vary by location, with some smaller outlets open until 10 PM.

Bring-Your-Own-Wine Restaurants

Montreal is known for its “apportez votre vin” restaurants, where you bring your own bottles instead of ordering from a wine list. The restaurant needs a liquor permit with a specific service option to allow this legally. Where it’s offered, you can bring wine, beer, cider, and ready-to-drink beverages up to 7% alcohol. Spirits, liqueurs, and homemade drinks are off-limits. Many of these restaurants don’t charge a corkage fee at all.

Drinking in Public

Drinking on the street, on a sidewalk, or in a public square is not allowed. Parks are a partial exception: alcohol is permitted in a Montreal park only in a designated picnic area and only if you are eating a meal with it.3Ville de Montréal. How to Behave in Parks A beer on a park bench without food will draw a fine.

What Counts as Valid ID

If you look young, expect to be carded at bars, restaurants, dépanneurs, and SAQ stores. Staff will ask for government-issued photo identification showing your date of birth. A Canadian driver’s license, Canadian passport, or international passport all work, and a Quebec health card with a photo is also accepted. Digital images, expired IDs, and cards without a photo are not.

Claiming falsely to be 18 or older to buy alcohol or enter a bar is itself an offence, and a minor caught doing so has to prove they were actually of legal age.2Légis Québec. Act Respecting Offences Relating to Alcoholic Beverages I-8.1 Using someone else’s ID is a separate matter and can bring federal identity-fraud charges under the Criminal Code.4Justice Laws Website. If You’re Under 22, You Can’t Drink and Drive at All

This is where visitors and new residents most often go wrong. You can legally drink at 18, but if you are under 22 you cannot have any alcohol in your system while driving. Quebec’s Highway Safety Code imposes a zero-alcohol rule on every driver under 22, whatever class of license they hold.5Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec. Drinking and Driving The same zero-tolerance standard applies to anyone with a learner’s permit or a probationary license, regardless of age.

For an 18-to-21-year-old, even a blood alcohol concentration of 0.01 triggers consequences: an immediate license suspension, demerit points, and in more serious cases criminal charges for impaired driving.6Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec. Drinking and Driving – What the Law Says The general criminal threshold of 0.08 still applies to everyone, but for young drivers the working limit is zero.

Cannabis Is 21, Not 18

The drinking age and the cannabis age are not the same in Quebec. You must be 21 to purchase, possess, or consume cannabis, the highest minimum cannabis age in Canada.7Gouvernement du Québec. The Cannabis Regulation Act A 19-year-old can legally order a drink at a bar but can be fined for possessing even a small amount of cannabis. If you’re between 18 and 20, drinking is fine and cannabis is not.

Penalties for Underage Drinking

A minor who buys alcohol, enters a bar without a valid reason, or lies about their age can be fined up to $100 per offence under Quebec’s Act respecting offences relating to alcoholic beverages.2Légis Québec. Act Respecting Offences Relating to Alcoholic Beverages I-8.1 Bars and restaurants face much stiffer fines for serving minors, starting at $175 to $425 for a first offence and climbing with each subsequent conviction, which is why staff card people who look anywhere close to the line.
