How Often to Order From Mary Kay: Active Status and the 50% Discount

To stay an active Mary Kay consultant, you need to place a wholesale order of at least $225 once every three months. That single order keeps your 50% wholesale discount, your eligibility for commissions, and your access to company prizes and recognition. Miss the window and you drop to a 30% profit margin until you place a qualifying order again.

How the Three-Month Window Is Counted

A qualifying order covers the month you place it plus the next two calendar months. Order in January, and you’re active through March. To avoid any gap, your next $225 wholesale order has to land before March ends.

Mary Kay’s official site describes the threshold as “$450 in personal retail sales.” That figure is the suggested retail price of the order, not what you pay. At the 50% consultant discount, $450 retail equals $225 wholesale, and $225 is the number that actually leaves your account.

You can check your current status, your last qualifying order, and the exact date your active period ends through the Mary Kay InTouch portal.

What You Lose If You Go Inactive

Going inactive isn’t the end of your business, but it costs you in specific ways.

The immediate hit is the discount. Inactive consultants can keep selling through their personalized online shop, but only at a 30% profit margin instead of 50%. On top of that, you lose eligibility for commissions on team members’ orders, company-sponsored prizes, and recognition programs. If you’ve built any kind of team, an extended stretch of inactivity can affect your standing within it.

Reactivation depends on how long you’ve been out:

  • Less than a year inactive: place a new $225 wholesale order and you’re back to active status with the full discount.
  • More than a year inactive: Mary Kay may require you to re-register and buy a new starter kit, essentially starting the business over.

That second scenario is the real cost of letting the clock run out repeatedly.

Why the 50% Discount Matters

New consultants start with the Mary Kay eStart package for $35, which includes product samples, catalogs, and digital tools for running an online business. That $35 gets you a personalized online shop and a 30% profit margin on retail sales.

The 50% wholesale discount only unlocks once you place your first $225 wholesale order. So the true cost of reaching the full consultant discount is $35 plus $225, or $260, before you’ve made a single sale. Every three months after that, another $225 order keeps that 50% margin in place. The ordering rule is really a rule about which margin you operate under.

Should You Order Just to Stay Active?

Experienced consultants tend to plan orders around actual customer demand rather than scrambling at the end of a three-month window. Rushed inventory purchases made only to preserve active status are one of the fastest ways to build up product you can’t sell.

The math is worth running before each order. If you don’t have $225 wholesale worth of demand or a realistic plan to sell it within a reasonable time, dropping to a 30% margin for a few months may cost you less than sitting on unsold inventory. If you’re consistently selling and recruiting, the qualifying order pays for itself and then some by preserving commissions and the 50% margin.

If You Decide to Stop Ordering Entirely

If you’ve decided you’re done ordering and want your money back on unsold product, Mary Kay runs a buyback program at 90% of the original wholesale cost. The process starts with a phone call to the Repurchase Department at 800-272-9333.

The company then sends you a Repurchase Part Detail Report listing every Section 1 product you purchased within the past year that qualifies for return. Section 1 covers the core skincare, color cosmetics, fragrances, and body care items. Limited edition and discontinued Section 1 products also qualify, as long as they’re original, unused, and unopened. Original boxes aren’t required.

A few practical points on the buyback:

  • Return only items that appear on the company’s list. Anything you send that isn’t on it is classified as abandoned, and Mary Kay won’t return it to you.
  • Complete and sign the Request for Repurchase form, then ship the eligible products to the Dallas distribution center. Keep your shipping receipt and tracking number.
  • Refunds take four to six weeks from the date the company receives your package.
  • The 90% figure is a starting point. Mary Kay deducts the cost of prizes, product bonuses, or order credits you earned from the original purchases, plus any outstanding balance you owe the company.

The net refund can be noticeably smaller than the 90% headline suggests, especially if you earned recognition prizes during your time as a consultant.

The Short Version

One $225 wholesale order every three months keeps you active, keeps your 50% discount, and keeps you eligible for commissions and prizes. Skip a window and you drop to a 30% margin until you order again. Skip for more than a year and you may have to start the business over. If you’re stopping for good, the buyback program can recover most of what you paid for eligible unsold product, but plan on four to six weeks and expect deductions against the 90% figure.
