How Often to Inspect by Setting
The right schedule tracks how much use and abuse the kit takes.

If an officer opens a kit and finds expired ointments, empty compartments, or degraded packaging, the supplies aren’t “adequate” or “readily available,” and a citation is on the table. What to Check During Each Inspection
A thorough pass takes about ten minutes if you work through it in order.
Expiration Dates
Start with medications and medicated products, because they expire fastest. Antibiotic ointments and burn creams typically last about two years. Alcohol wipes run about the same. Eyewash solutions generally hold for three years. Non-medicated items like adhesive tape, gauze, and cold packs can last up to five years if the packaging is intact, though the printed date is what counts.
Pull expired items for disposal. An expired antiseptic wipe can look fine and still have lost its effectiveness, and expired medications degrade in ways you can’t see.
Packaging Integrity
Sterile items are only sterile while their wrappers are sealed. Check every bandage, gauze pad, and antiseptic packet for tears, punctures, or moisture. A compromised wrapper means the item is no longer safe for wound care. This shows up most in kits stored in vehicles or outdoors, where temperature swings work the packaging.
Inventory Count

The Container Itself

Where the kit sits changes how fast its contents deteriorate. Keeping a Simple Inspection Log
Federal rules don’t require a written log, but keeping one is the easiest way to prove the kit is being maintained if the question ever comes up. A tag inside or attached to the kit works for most workplaces: date, inspector’s initials, anything expired or missing, and what was restocked.
For multiple kits across a facility, a spreadsheet or safety management app that tracks each kit’s location and last inspection date keeps any one of them from being forgotten. The point isn’t the format. It’s that someone can look at the kit and see when it was last opened by a person who was checking rather than bleeding.
