How Often Does the IRS Website Update Refund Status?

The IRS updates refund status on its website once every 24 hours, almost always overnight. That applies to the Where’s My Refund tool on IRS.gov, the same tool inside the IRS2Go app, and your IRS Online Account balance. Checking again a few hours later shows the same information, so one look per day is enough.

How Often Where’s My Refund Updates

Where’s My Refund pulls fresh data from IRS systems on a single overnight cycle. Whatever the tool shows in the morning is what it will show all day, until the next overnight refresh runs.1Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool Refreshing the page, clearing cookies, or trying a different browser won’t surface a newer status.

Calling won’t help either. IRS phone assistors work from the same database the public tool draws on, so they see exactly what you see.1Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool Once a day, first thing in the morning, is the useful rhythm.

When Your Return First Shows Up in the Tool

Before the tool can show a status, the IRS has to log the return. How long that takes depends on how you filed:

  • E-filed current-year return: status appears about 24 hours after the IRS accepts your submission.
  • E-filed prior-year return: allow 3 days.
  • Paper return: allow at least 3 weeks before it shows up at all.

Those windows are about your return being visible in the system, not about how long the refund itself will take.2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund

What You Need to Sign In

Where’s My Refund asks for three pieces of information: your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of the refund you’re expecting.1Internal Revenue Service. What Each Stage on the Tracker Means

The tool shows a three-stage tracker, and your return moves from one stage to the next as the IRS works it:3Internal Revenue Service. Use Where’s My Refund to Check the Status of Your Refund

  • Return Received. The IRS has your return and has started processing it.
  • Refund Approved. Processing is done and the refund amount is set. You’ll see an estimated deposit or mailing date here.
  • Refund Sent. The IRS has released the money to your bank for direct deposit or mailed a paper check.

Most e-filed returns move through all three stages within 21 days.1Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool Paper takes much longer. As of early 2026, the IRS is working on original paper Form 1040 returns received in January 2026, with paper refund returns given priority over other filings.4Internal Revenue Service. Why the Status May Not Change for Days

If the tracker sits on the same stage past the 21-day mark, one of a handful of things is usually going on:5Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund

  • Math errors, missing forms, or inconsistencies that pushed the return into additional review.
  • Identity theft or fraud flags that hold the refund until the issue is resolved.
  • Returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit, or the Child Tax Credit, which may require the IRS to correct the claimed amount.
  • Returns filed with Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation), which need extra processing steps.
  • Bank posting time on the receiving end, even after the IRS has sent the money.

If the IRS needs anything from you, it will send a letter. It will not phone or email. Phone representatives can only research a delayed refund after 21 days for an e-filed return, after 6 weeks for a paper return, or when Where’s My Refund specifically tells you to call.5Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns Use a Different Tool

If you filed Form 1040-X, the standard refund tracker won’t show it. You’ll use Where’s My Amended Return instead, and you can start checking about 3 weeks after you submit.6Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Processing generally runs 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes up to 16.7Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions The amended-return tool refreshes less often than the standard tracker, so daily checks aren’t useful.

Online Account and Transcripts

Your IRS Online Account is a separate area from Where’s My Refund. It shows your balance due, payment history, and details from your most recent return. It follows the same daily rhythm: the balance updates no more than once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Payments you make from inside the Online Account show up right away under payment activity. Payments made by other methods can take 1 to 3 weeks to appear.8Internal Revenue Service. Here’s How Individual Taxpayers Can View Their Tax Account Info

Cycle Codes on Your Transcript

Tax transcripts carry more detail than the Online Account dashboard. Each transcript has a cycle code, and the last two digits show whether your account is on a daily or a weekly update schedule. Daily accounts can see transcript changes on various weekdays. Weekly accounts generally see updates finalize midweek and become visible by Friday.

The line many people watch for is Transaction Code 846, which signals that a refund payment has been scheduled.10Internal Revenue Service. 3.17.20 Refund Intercept Program Seeing 846 generally means the refund has been approved and a deposit or check is on the way. Transcripts are most useful when a return has pushed past the standard 21-day window and you want a closer look at where things sit internally.

If the Site Is Down on a Sunday Morning

The IRS takes parts of its online systems offline for routine maintenance. The Modernized e-File system runs with limited services on Sundays from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern Time. During that window it accepts submissions but doesn’t generate acknowledgments or process state services.11Internal Revenue Service. Modernized e-File Operational Status Other IRS web tools may also have brief Sunday-morning outages. Try again later in the day. Maintenance windows don’t affect refund processing or the data behind your account.
