The IRS updates the Where’s My Refund tool once every 24 hours, almost always overnight, so checking more than once a day won’t show you anything new.1Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool The IRS2Go mobile app pulls from the same feed and follows the same cycle. A weekday morning check, after the overnight batch has posted, is the most useful time to look.
When Your Status First Appears
The 24-hour update cycle only matters once your return is in the system. How long that takes depends on how you filed.
- Current-year e-filed returns: status generally appears within 24 hours of the IRS acknowledging receipt.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
- Prior-year e-filed returns: allow about three days.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
- Paper returns: the tool won’t reflect your return until roughly four weeks after the IRS receives it, and the refund itself often takes six or more weeks.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
Most e-filed refunds arrive within 21 days. That’s the baseline, not a guarantee. Returns pulled for extra review sit at “still processing” while nothing visible changes on the tool.1Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool
Sunday Downtime and Stale Data
The tool goes offline on Sundays from midnight to noon Eastern Time for scheduled maintenance, and shorter maintenance windows show up on weekday nights.3Internal Revenue Service. AIR Operational Status If you log in during one of these windows, you may see data from the prior cycle or an error message. Neither reflects a change to your refund.
Why the Tool May Not Change for Weeks
The 24-hour refresh only pushes new data if the IRS has new data on your account. Several situations keep the status frozen well past the normal window.
If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, your entire refund is held until at least February 15 under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act, even the portion unrelated to those credits.4Internal Revenue Service. Filing Season Statistics for Week Ending Feb. 6, 2026 No deposit date will appear until after the hold lifts. Filing early doesn’t change this.
Identity verification is the other common reason for a long silence. If the IRS suspects someone else filed using your information, it freezes the return and mails a letter (5071C, 4883C, or 5747C) directing you to verify online, by phone, or in person.5Internal Revenue Service. The IRS Alerts Taxpayers of Suspected Identity Theft by Letter Where’s My Refund shows “still processing” the entire time without explaining why. If several weeks have passed with no movement, check your IRS Online Account for notices; mail can arrive well after the hold posts.
Refunds can also be reduced after they’re approved. The Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service intercepts refunds to cover past-due child support, defaulted federal student loans, and certain state debts, and the IRS applies its own offsets for prior-year tax debt.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds The tool can still display “Refund Sent” for the full amount while the deposit arrives smaller. A separate notice explains the offset, and the Treasury Offset Program line at 800-304-3107 confirms which debt triggered it.7Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Tax Refund Offset
Amended Returns Update on a Slower Cycle
Where’s My Amended Return is a separate tool, and it doesn’t refresh nightly the way the main tracker does. The IRS doesn’t publish the exact cadence, and the tool’s maintenance windows fall on Mondays and occasional Sundays. You can start checking about three weeks after submitting Form 1040-X, and the tool moves through three stages: received, adjusted, and completed.8Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Processing itself takes 8 to 12 weeks, and more complex cases stretch to 16.9Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions
Transcripts Often Update Before the Tool
Your tax account transcript, available through the IRS Online Account portal, frequently shows movement before Where’s My Refund catches up.10Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals The transcript carries an eight-digit cycle code indicating when your record was last processed. Codes ending in 01 through 04 generally update daily; codes ending in 05 are typically weekly, posting on Thursdays, though some 05 accounts also update daily in practice.11Internal Revenue Service. 6209 Section 8A Master File Codes
Two transaction codes matter most for tracking:
- Code 150 confirms your return has been officially entered into the system.
- Code 846, “Refund Issued,” is the one to watch. It often appears on the transcript before Where’s My Refund shows a deposit date.
Hold codes explain a stuck status. Code 570 signals a credit hold or pending liability and often clears on its own when the IRS finishes a routine adjustment. Code 810 is a hard refund freeze and usually points to a deliberate review. Code 470 marks a pending taxpayer claim and pauses notices.11Internal Revenue Service. 6209 Section 8A Master File Codes
When to Stop Refreshing and Call
The IRS won’t take a refund inquiry by phone until certain thresholds pass:
- 21 days after acceptance for an e-filed return.
- Six weeks after mailing for a paper return.
- 16 weeks after submission for an amended return.9Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions
