The Nova Credit Passport is a service that retrieves your credit history from a supported foreign credit bureau, translates it into a format U.S. lenders can read, and delivers it inside a participating lender’s application so your record abroad can factor into the decision. You don’t request it on your own and hand it to a bank; it runs through lenders and landlords that have integrated Nova Credit into their application systems.
What the Credit Passport Is, and What It Isn’t
Nova Credit operates as a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, carrying the same accuracy and consumer-rights obligations as the domestic bureaus.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681 – Congressional Findings and Statement of Purpose In practice it acts as a reseller: it pulls your file from an overseas bureau’s database, repackages it, and sends the lender a report that includes a local-equivalent credit score, individual tradelines with payment history, inquiries, risk attributes, and adverse action codes.2Nova Credit. Credit Passport – Cross-Border Credit The algorithm adjusts for how foreign bureaus measure risk so a strong score in one country lands as a meaningful signal here.
Three limits are worth knowing up front. The Credit Passport does not create a U.S. credit file. It is a one-time snapshot used by one lender for one decision, and the translated data is not sent to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. It also does not produce a FICO or VantageScore number; the “local equivalent credit score” is a translated metric, which is why only lenders who have built their underwriting to read this format can accept it.2Nova Credit. Credit Passport – Cross-Border Credit And it is not a document you can download and present to any bank; it only exists inside an integrated application flow.
Countries Nova Credit Can Pull Your File From
Nova Credit retrieves data from nearly 20 countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Ghana, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.3Nova Credit. What Countries Can Nova Credit Obtain My Credit Data From? UK coverage includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, but not overseas UK territories. Each connection relies on a formal partnership with the local bureau. If your home country is not on this list, the service won’t work for you, and there is no workaround.
How to Request a Credit Passport
You don’t apply for a Credit Passport directly. The request happens inside a participating lender or landlord’s application. When you reach the credit-check step, you select the option to use international credit data, get redirected to a Nova Credit interface, and authorize the system to pull your foreign file and send the translated report back.
Before you start, have the following ready:
- A government-issued photo ID. A passport is the most common choice.
- The foreign residential address linked to your overseas credit file, formatted exactly as the bureau has it. Minor spelling or formatting differences can cause the retrieval to fail, so cross-check a recent utility bill or bank statement from that country.
- A country-specific identification number. Indian applicants need a PAN card number, Mexican applicants need a CURP, and other countries have their own equivalents. These usually appear on an existing credit report or bank statement from home.
- Your SSN or ITIN if you already have one. Including it helps connect the foreign data to any domestic file you’ve started.
The single most common reason a request fails is an address mismatch between what you type and what the foreign bureau has stored. Five minutes with your old paperwork before you start is the best insurance.
Where You Can Actually Use It
You can only use the Credit Passport with institutions that have integrated Nova Credit into their application systems. The participating pool spans credit cards, banking products, rental housing, and other financial services. Publicly announced partners on the financial side include American Express, HSBC, SoFi, and MoneyLion. On the rental side, property management platforms like Intellirent, Appfolio, and Yardi use it for tenant screening.4Nova Credit. International Tenant Screening for Intellirent’s Customer Base
Rental screening is often where newcomers first hit a credit wall. Without a domestic file, many landlords ask for a larger security deposit or a co-signer. A Credit Passport showing on-time payments in your home country can remove that barrier or bring the terms back to normal.
Cost and Processing Time
Consumers do not pay to use the Credit Passport. The lender or housing provider covers the cost, the same way they pay for a standard domestic credit pull. No separate fee, subscription, or tier applies on your side.
Most lenders receive the translated report almost immediately after you authorize the pull. If manual review is needed, turnaround usually falls within 24 to 48 hours. If something goes wrong during retrieval, support resolution tends to run in days rather than hours, which is why having clean documentation before you start matters.
Disputing Errors on Your Report
Because Nova Credit is a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA, you have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information on your translated report.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681 – Congressional Findings and Statement of Purpose You can file online through Nova Credit’s dispute portal or mail a completed form to Nova Credit, 650 California St, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94108.5Nova Credit. Disputes
One wrinkle: if the error originates in your foreign bureau’s file rather than in Nova Credit’s translation, Nova Credit can flag it but cannot directly change another bureau’s data. You may need to dispute with the foreign bureau at the same time, which can be slow if that bureau works on different timelines or requires in-person visits. Start the dispute as soon as you see the problem rather than waiting until it costs you an approval.
Building a U.S. Credit File After the Passport Opens the Door
The real value of the Credit Passport is getting you into your first U.S. credit product. Once that account is active, the clock starts on building a domestic history. FICO needs at least one account open for six months or more and at least one account reported to a bureau within the past six months before it will generate a score.6myFICO. What Are the Minimum Requirements for a FICO Score? So your earliest realistic FICO score arrives roughly six months after your first account is opened and reported.
A few habits speed things along in that window. Use the card for small recurring charges like a phone plan or streaming subscription, pay the full statement balance every month, and keep utilization low. Once a FICO score appears, you’re visible to the broader lending market and no longer dependent on the Credit Passport for future applications.
If the Credit Passport route isn’t open to you, either because your country isn’t supported or the lender you want doesn’t participate, secured credit cards and credit-builder loans are the standard alternatives. A secured card requires a cash deposit that doubles as your credit limit. A credit-builder loan holds the borrowed amount in a savings account and reports your payments to the bureaus. Either option gets an account on file and starts the same six-month countdown toward a scorable credit history.
