How much money you can transfer online depends on your bank, the type of account, and the rail the money moves on. Same-bank internal transfers can run to $100,000 a day at major institutions, ACH transfers to outside banks usually fall between $2,000 and $25,000 per day, online wires commonly top out around $50,000, and the newer real-time payment networks now support transactions up to $10 million. Peer-to-peer apps sit at the other end, starting in the low hundreds for unverified accounts. Federal law does not cap what you can send electronically; it requires banks to keep records and file reports once certain thresholds are crossed.
Limits by Transfer Method
The cheapest and least restricted move is between your own accounts at the same bank. Bank of America allows up to $100,000 per day for transfers from an investment account to a linked checking or savings account, with higher ceilings for private banking and small business clients.1Bank of America. Online Banking Service Agreement Other large banks operate on the same idea, though the exact number varies by institution and account tier.
ACH transfers to accounts at other banks are more restricted. Daily limits for personal accounts commonly fall between $2,000 and $25,000. The ACH network itself allows same-day payments up to $1 million, so any cap below that comes from your own bank’s policy rather than a system-wide rule.2Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Frequently Asked Questions Premium and high-balance accounts almost always qualify for higher ACH limits than entry-level checking.
Wire transfers occupy the top tier for standard bank-to-bank moves. Citi allows online domestic wires up to $50,000 per account per business day.3Citi. Online Wire Transfer Limits and Rules Fidelity sets its bank wire limit at $1 million per day per client, while its electronic fund transfers cap at $100,000 for withdrawals and $250,000 for deposits.4Fidelity. How to Choose Between an EFT or a Bank Wire If you need to exceed a bank’s online wire cap, most institutions will process the transfer by phone or in a branch after verifying your identity.
Savings accounts deserve a note. Regulation D used to limit certain withdrawals and transfers from savings deposits to six per month. The Federal Reserve removed that limit from the regulation in 2020, but the change was permissive, and many banks still enforce a six-transfer cap on savings as a matter of internal policy.5Federal Register. Regulation D: Reserve Requirements of Depository Institutions Check your account terms before you plan a series of savings transfers in the same month.
Real-Time Payment Networks
Two newer rails move money in seconds instead of the one-to-three business days ACH takes. The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service raised its network transaction limit from $1 million to $10 million in November 2025.6Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedNow Service Will Raise Transaction Limit to $10 Million The Clearing House’s RTP network also supports transfers up to $10 million per transaction and operates around the clock.7The Clearing House. Real Time Payments
Those $10 million ceilings are network maximums, not guarantees your bank will let you send that much. Individual institutions set their own lower limits, and many cap consumer real-time transfers well below the network figure. Ask your bank what its actual FedNow or RTP limit is for your account type.
Peer-to-Peer Apps
Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, and Zelle use tiered limits tied to identity verification. Unverified accounts on most platforms start with a weekly sending limit in the low hundreds. Once you verify with a Social Security number, driver’s license, or similar documentation, the ceiling rises sharply. PayPal removes its total sending cap for verified accounts, though a single transaction is capped at $60,000.8PayPal. What’s the Maximum Amount I Can Send with My PayPal Account Venmo’s verified personal accounts can send up to $60,000 per week.
Zelle works differently because your bank sets the limits, not Zelle itself. Daily Zelle caps at major banks range from about $500 to $10,000, with monthly limits usually between $5,000 and $20,000. Look up your own bank’s Zelle settings rather than relying on a generic number.
Business profiles carry higher limits but require additional documentation, such as an Employer Identification Number. All platforms aggregate individual payments against the total, so ten $100 transfers use the same weekly cap as one $1,000 transfer. Hitting your limit repeatedly or sending to unfamiliar recipients can trigger a hold or identity re-verification.
International Wire Transfers
Sending money abroad through a bank wire adds variables. Most banks allow between $5,000 and $50,000 per day through their online portal, and Citi applies its $50,000 daily online wire limit to both domestic and international transfers.3Citi. Online Wire Transfer Limits and Rules Exceeding the online cap usually means visiting a branch or calling a representative so the bank can verify the source of funds and the recipient.
Fees for international wires at major banks generally run $40 to $65 for outgoing transfers, higher than domestic wires at $25 to $30. The flat fee is only part of the cost. Banks apply their own exchange rate when converting dollars to foreign currency, and that rate almost always carries a markup over the mid-market rate. A “fee-free” international transfer from a fintech app may still cost you 1% to 3% hidden in the exchange rate. Compare the total amount the recipient will receive, not the stated fee. Intermediary banks along the route can also deduct their own fees, and compliance reviews on either end can stretch processing to several business days.
Federal Reporting Rules That Look Like Limits
A common misconception is that the government caps how much you can move electronically. It does not. Federal law imposes reporting and recordkeeping obligations on banks, not limits on you. Knowing the thresholds helps explain why your bank sometimes asks questions about large transactions.
The $3,000 Recordkeeping Rule
For wire transfers and other electronic funds transmittals of $3,000 or more, banks must record the names, addresses, account numbers, amount, and date for both sender and recipient.9eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.410 – Records to Be Made and Retained by Financial Institutions This is often called the “travel rule” because the sender’s identifying information must travel with the payment through every intermediary bank.10FFIEC. Funds Transfers Recordkeeping – BSA/AML Manual For transfers to or from accounts outside the United States, the recordkeeping threshold rises to $10,000.
The $10,000 Cash Report
The $10,000 figure people hear most often applies to cash, not electronic transfers. When a bank handles a cash deposit, withdrawal, or exchange of physical currency exceeding $10,000, it must file a Currency Transaction Report with the federal government.11eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.311 – Filing Obligations for Reports of Transactions in Currency “Currency” here means physical coin and paper money, not electronic funds.12FFIEC. Assessing Compliance with BSA Regulatory Requirements The report is a notification, not a block. The money still moves. But if you’re depositing cash to fund a large wire, the cash deposit itself can trigger the report even though the wire wouldn’t.
Structuring Is a Crime
Banks also monitor for patterns designed to dodge the $10,000 threshold. Splitting a $12,000 deposit into two $6,000 deposits on different days will trigger a Suspicious Activity Report.13Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Suspicious Activity Reporting (Structuring)14Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Suspicious Activity Reporting Requirements – A Quick Reference Guide for Money Services Businesses Structuring is a federal crime regardless of whether the underlying money is legitimate. The standard penalty is up to five years in prison, rising to ten years if the structuring is part of a broader pattern involving more than $100,000 in a twelve-month period.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 USC 5324 – Structuring Transactions to Evade Reporting Requirement Prohibited If you have a legitimate reason to move a large sum, do it in one transaction and let the bank file its paperwork. The report itself causes you no harm.
Tax Rules on Large Transfers
Transfer limits and tax rules are separate, but large transfers can trigger IRS reporting.
Gift Tax Reporting
Sending more than $19,000 to any single person during 2026 requires you to file a gift tax return on Form 709.16Internal Revenue Service. What’s New – Estate and Gift Tax Filing does not mean owing tax. It counts against your lifetime exemption, which is large enough that most people never actually pay gift tax. The $19,000 annual exclusion applies per recipient, so you could send $19,000 each to five different people without triggering any reporting.
Receiving a large gift from a foreign person has a separate threshold. Receiving more than $100,000 total from a foreign individual or estate during a tax year requires you to file Form 3520.17Internal Revenue Service. Gifts from Foreign Person For gifts from foreign corporations or partnerships, the reporting threshold is much lower, around $20,000 adjusted annually for inflation. Penalties for failing to file Form 3520 can reach 25% of the unreported amount.
1099-K Reporting
Receiving payments through PayPal, Venmo, or Cash App for goods or services triggers a 1099-K when your gross receipts exceed $20,000 and you have more than 200 transactions in a calendar year.18Internal Revenue Service. Treasury, IRS Issue Proposed Regulations Reflecting Changes from the One, Big, Beautiful Bill to the Threshold for Backup Withholding on Certain Payments Made Through Third Parties This threshold was restored under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill after years of uncertainty about a lower $600 threshold. Personal transfers between friends and family aren’t included, but income from selling goods or freelancing through these apps is taxable whether or not you receive a form.
Raising Your Limit
Your current limits are usually visible in the settings or security section of your bank’s online portal or app, often labeled “transfer limits” or “daily limits.” If they aren’t shown there, the account agreement your bank provided at opening spells out the defaults.
Requesting an increase typically means calling your bank or submitting a request through the app. Have recent transaction history and a government-issued ID ready, since the bank will assess whether your account history and balance justify a higher cap. Some banks offer temporary limit increases for a real estate closing or large purchase, which can be faster to approve than a permanent change. Business accounts generally start with higher default limits, so if you regularly move large sums, converting to a business account may be more practical than repeated temporary requests.
When your bank won’t raise the limit high enough, a wire transfer is usually the workaround. Wire limits are almost always higher than ACH, and for transfers exceeding even the online wire cap, a branch visit or a call to the bank’s wire department can authorize one-time exceptions for verified customers.
One boundary worth knowing before you send: federal Regulation E protects you from unauthorized transfers, but if you voluntarily send money to a scammer, most platforms disclaim liability even when you were tricked. Only send to people you know.
