SSI does not cap how much rent you can pay, so the question of how much SSI allows for rent has no dollar answer on the rent side. What the program does is set a maximum monthly benefit — $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple in 20261Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026 — and then reduce that check when your rent arrangement means someone else is effectively subsidizing your housing. Pay your own full share of shelter costs and your benefit is not touched. Pay less than a specific threshold, or let a relative cover part of the rent, and the Social Security Administration counts the help as income.
If Someone Helps Pay Your Rent
When you live in your own place and another person pays part of your rent, mortgage, or utilities, the agency applies the presumed maximum value rule. It presumes the help you receive is worth one-third of the federal benefit rate plus a $20 general income exclusion. For an individual in 2026, that presumed value is $351.33, and that amount is counted as unearned income against your check.2Social Security Administration. How Much You Could Get From SSI
Shelter, for this purpose, means rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, heating fuel, gas, electricity, water, sewage, and garbage collection.3eCFR. 20 CFR Part 416 Subpart K – Income If a family member pays your electric bill or covers a portion of your rent directly, those payments fall inside this calculation.
The presumption is rebuttable. If the actual value of the help is less than $351.33, you can show that and have the lower figure used instead.4eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1140 – The Presumed Value Rule Comparable rental listings, a signed lease, and a written statement from the person providing the help are the kind of documentation the agency accepts.
If You Pay Below-Market Rent
A rule that took effect on September 30, 2024, and now applies nationwide protects SSI recipients renting at below-market rates.5Federal Register. Expansion of the Rental Subsidy Policy for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Applicants and Recipients If the rent you are required to pay each month is at least equal to the presumed maximum value — $351.33 for an individual in 2026 — the agency treats the arrangement as an ordinary business transaction. Nothing is counted against your benefit, even when your rent sits well below what neighbors pay.
If your required rent is below $351.33, the agency counts only the difference between what you pay and either the presumed maximum value or the actual market rent, whichever is less. So a “friends and family” rate does not automatically cost you the full $351.33; the reduction tracks the real gap, and it is capped by the presumed maximum. For many recipients paying a modest rent to a relative, this rule is the difference between a small adjustment and a large one.
If You Live in Someone Else’s Home
A different rule applies when you live in someone else’s household, that person pays for your shelter, and they also pay for all of your meals. In that case the agency uses the one-third reduction rule: your federal benefit is cut by exactly one-third, no more and no less.6eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1131 – The One-Third Reduction Rule For an individual in 2026, the reduction is $331.33, bringing the maximum payment down to $662.67.1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
The reduction is all-or-nothing. It does not matter whether the shelter and meals you actually receive are worth more or less than $331.33. If the conditions are met, the flat cut applies every month, and unlike the presumed maximum value rule, this one cannot be rebutted with proof of a lower value.
If you contribute your fair share of household shelter expenses, the one-third reduction does not apply and you receive the full federal benefit.7Social Security Administration. Living Arrangements – Supplemental Security Income Fair share generally means dividing total household shelter costs by the number of people living there.
Section 8 and Public Housing
Federal housing assistance does not count as income for SSI. A Section 8 voucher covering part of your rent, or residence in public housing, will not trigger a reduction under the rules above.8Social Security Administration. Exceptions to SSI Income and Resource Limits The source of the housing help matters: a HUD subsidy is excluded, while the same dollar amount of help from a relative can be counted.
Food No Longer Counts
Since September 30, 2024, food has been removed entirely from the in-kind support calculation.9Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations Free groceries from a neighbor, meals paid for by a parent, or a family member picking up your restaurant tab no longer reduce your check. The agency still asks whether others in your household pay for your meals, but only to determine which shelter rule applies. The food itself carries no dollar impact.
Reporting a Move or Rent Change
Any change in your rent, utilities, household members, or living arrangement must be reported to the Social Security Administration no later than 10 days after the end of the month the change occurred.10Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Reporting Responsibilities Move on March 15 and the report is due by April 10. You can call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), visit a local office, or mail the report; a mailed report counts as timely if the postmark is inside the window.11Social Security Administration. Have documents ready. A signed lease, rent receipts, or a utility bill in your name will let the agency calculate your new payment accurately. Without evidence, the agency may apply the highest possible reduction until you produce it.
Missing a report costs money. The penalty is $25 to $100 for each late or missed report.10Social Security Administration.
