In 2026, mental health disability pays somewhere between roughly $994 and $4,152 per month, depending on which program you qualify for. Supplemental Security Income tops out at $994 for an individual. Social Security Disability Insurance averages about $1,630 and reaches a maximum of $4,152 for people with high lifetime earnings. Veterans with a service-connected mental health condition rated at 100 percent receive $3,938. Your actual monthly amount depends on your work history, other income, living situation, and, for veterans, your disability rating.
SSDI Monthly Payments
Social Security Disability Insurance pays based on your lifetime earnings, not on your diagnosis. Whether your claim is for depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or a physical injury, the Social Security Administration uses the same formula: it takes your highest-earning years, adjusts them for inflation, and calculates a Primary Insurance Amount that becomes your monthly check. The formula favors lower earners, replacing a larger share of their past wages than it does for people who earned near the taxable maximum.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 423 – Disability Insurance Benefit Payments
For 2026, the estimated average SSDI payment for a disabled worker is $1,630 per month, and the maximum possible benefit is $4,152. Reaching that ceiling requires decades of earnings at or near the Social Security taxable cap, so most recipients land well below it.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet
Every SSDI check is adjusted each January for inflation. The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment was 2.5 percent, applied automatically.
SSI Monthly Payments
Supplemental Security Income is the other federal disability program, and it works nothing like SSDI. It is needs-based, ignores your work history, and pays a flat federal rate. In 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet
Most people receive less than the maximum. The SSA reduces your payment based on other income you receive, including wages, other benefits, and even non-cash help. If you live in someone else’s household and they cover all your food and shelter, your check can be cut by roughly one-third of the federal rate, about $331 in 2026.3Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.1130 – In-Kind Support and Maintenance
Live rent-free but pay for your own groceries and utilities? The SSA uses a “presumed maximum value” rule that caps the reduction at one-third of the federal rate plus $20, about $351 in 2026. If the free housing is worth less than that cap, the reduction is smaller.4Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Living Arrangements
State Supplements
Some states add their own money on top of the federal SSI amount. These supplements range from about $10 per month to several hundred, depending on the state and its budget. Some states run the payments themselves; others pay the SSA to distribute them. Not every state offers one, so residents of those states receive only the federal rate.5eCFR. 20 CFR 416.2001 – State Supplementary Payments; General
The Resource Limit
SSI has an asset ceiling that has not changed in decades. To stay eligible, you cannot own more than $2,000 in countable resources as an individual, or $3,000 as a couple. Countable resources include bank accounts, stocks, and most financial assets. Your home, one vehicle, most household goods, and property you cannot sell are excluded.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet6Social Security Administration. VA Compensation for Service-Connected Mental Health Conditions
Veterans whose mental health condition is connected to military service receive compensation through the VA’s rating system. The VA assigns a percentage from 0 to 100 based on how severely your condition limits your ability to work and function day to day, and that percentage sets your monthly payment.7eCFR. 38 CFR 4.130 – Schedule of Ratings, Mental Disorders
For 2026, the monthly rates for a veteran without dependents are:
- 30 percent rating: $552
- 70 percent rating: $1,808
- 100 percent rating: $3,938
Veterans rated at 30 percent or higher receive additional money for a spouse, children, or dependent parents. A veteran rated at 100 percent with a spouse, for example, receives $4,158 per month.8Veterans Affairs. Current Veterans Disability Compensation Rates
Private Long-Term Disability Pays Differently for Mental Health
If you have long-term disability coverage through an employer, expect it to work differently for a mental health claim than for a physical one. Group LTD policies typically replace about 60 percent of your pre-disability salary and continue paying until retirement age for a physical condition. For mental health conditions, roughly 99 percent of group LTD policies cap benefits at 24 months. After that, the private payments stop unless you also have a qualifying physical condition.9U.S. Department of Labor. Long-Term Disability Benefits and Mental Health Disparity
Getting approved for SSDI while receiving LTD generally will not increase your total monthly income. Most LTD policies offset their payment by the amount of your SSDI check. If your LTD benefit is $3,000 and your SSDI is $1,630, the insurer pays only $1,370, keeping your combined total at $3,000.
How These Payments Are Taxed
The tax picture varies by program. VA disability compensation is entirely tax-free at the federal level and does not go on your return.10Internal Revenue Service. Veterans Tax Information and Services SSI is also not taxable, because the IRS does not count needs-based benefits as income.
SSDI is different. It can be partially taxable if your combined income (half your SSDI plus all other income, including tax-exempt interest) crosses $25,000 for a single filer or $32,000 for a married couple filing jointly. At higher incomes, up to 85 percent of your SSDI can be taxed.11Internal Revenue Service. Regular and Disability Benefits
Working While You Receive Benefits
Both SSDI and SSI let you earn some money without losing your check, but the rules differ.
SSDI recipients get a trial work period. Any month you earn $1,210 or more in 2026 counts as a trial work month, and you get nine of them within a rolling 60-month window. During those months, you keep your full SSDI regardless of how much you earn.12Social Security – Ticket to Work. Fact Sheet – Trial Work Period 2026 After you use all nine, the SSA looks at whether you are earning above the substantial gainful activity threshold of $1,690 per month. If you are, benefits stop, though a 36-month extended eligibility period lets them restart in any month your earnings drop below that line.13Social Security Administration. What’s New in 2026 – The Red Book
SSI uses a formula instead. The SSA disregards the first $65 of earned income each month plus a $20 general income exclusion, then reduces your SSI by $1 for every $2 you earn above that. Part-time work is possible, but your monthly payment shrinks as your earnings grow.
