If you use the Post-9/11 GI Bill at the 100% benefit level, online classes pay full in-state tuition at a public school or up to $29,920.95 per year at a private school, a monthly housing allowance of $1,169.00 through July 2026 (then $1,261.00 starting August 2026), and up to $1,000 per year for books and supplies. If you use the Montgomery GI Bill instead, you get a flat $2,518.00 per month with no separate tuition or housing payment. Every one of those numbers changes with your benefit tier and how many credits you are taking, so the real answer to how much the GI Bill pays for online classes depends on which chapter you use and how you enroll.
Tuition Payments for Online Programs
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition directly to your school, and how much it pays depends on the type of school. At a public university, if you qualify for in-state tuition, the VA covers the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees with no annual dollar cap.1Veterans Affairs. How We Determine Your Post-9/11 GI Bill Coverage An $8,000-per-year online bachelor’s at a state university means $8,000 paid straight to the school.
At a private or foreign school, the VA pays your actual tuition up to a national maximum of $29,920.95 per academic year.2Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates Anything over that cap is on you unless the school participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Yellow Ribbon for Tuition Above the Cap
Yellow Ribbon is a voluntary program in which a school contributes toward tuition above the annual cap and the VA matches that contribution. You must be eligible for Post-9/11 at 100% to qualify; veterans at lower benefit percentages are not eligible. Each school sets its own participation terms and dollar limits, and some restrict Yellow Ribbon to on-campus programs rather than online ones. Confirm before enrolling.
In-State Rates and the Out-of-State Trap
Section 702 of the Veterans Choice Act requires public schools with VA-approved programs to charge in-state tuition to eligible veterans and dependents, but the residency rules generally require you to live in the state where the school is located.3Veterans Affairs. In-State Tuition Rates Under the Veterans Choice Act If you live in Florida and enroll online at a public university in Oregon, Section 702 does not automatically get you Oregon’s in-state rate. Some schools voluntarily extend in-state pricing to all online students, but that is a school policy rather than a VA requirement. Confirm your tuition classification with the registrar before your first term.
Monthly Housing Allowance for Online Students
Students enrolled exclusively in online courses receive a housing allowance set at 50% of the national average Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 3313 – Educational Assistance: Amount; Payment For the academic year running August 2025 through July 2026, the full-time rate is $1,169.00 per month.2Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates Starting August 1, 2026, it rises to $1,261.00 per month.5Veterans Affairs. Future Rates
The rate is the same whether you live in rural Texas or downtown San Francisco. That flat national number is the main financial trade-off of going fully online: it stretches further in cheap areas and less in expensive ones.
Rate of Pursuit and the Half-Time Cutoff
To get any housing allowance at all, you must be enrolled at more than half-time. The VA figures your “rate of pursuit” by dividing your credit hours by the number your school considers full-time, then rounding to the nearest tenth. Nine credits out of a 12-credit full-time load is 80%, and your housing allowance gets prorated to match.2Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates
At exactly 50% or below, you get nothing for housing. The rounding matters. Seven credits out of 12 is 58%, which rounds up to 60% and pays. Six credits is exactly 50% and pays nothing. One credit hour can be the difference between a full housing check and no check at all.
Hybrid Enrollment Pays Much More
Taking even one class in a physical classroom switches your housing allowance from the flat online rate to the localized E-5-with-dependents BAH for the campus ZIP code. In many metro areas that runs $2,500 to $3,500 per month.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 3313 – Educational Assistance: Amount; Payment Compared to $1,169, that is a serious difference.
Since August 2019, the VA has treated hybrid courses as in-residence as long as at least one class meeting happens in person during the term. The in-person portion does not have to be the majority of the course. Your school’s certifying official controls this classification when reporting enrollment, so if a course feels hybrid but shows up in VA records as “online,” raise it with the certifying official before the term starts.
One caution. If you switch from hybrid to fully online mid-semester, the VA recalculates your housing downward to the online rate for the remainder of the term. Dropping your only in-person course partway through can cost more than a thousand dollars a month.
Books and Supplies Stipend
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to $1,000 per academic year for books and supplies, deposited directly into your bank account at the start of each term after your school certifies enrollment. The VA calculates it at roughly $41.67 per credit hour, up to 24 credits per year.2Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates Twelve credits in the fall and twelve in the spring hits the $1,000 ceiling. Credits past 24 in the year do not add more book money.
Online students receive the stipend on the same terms as campus students, and there is no requirement to spend it on physical textbooks. Software, required hardware, and digital course materials all qualify.
Your Benefit Percentage Scales Everything
The dollar figures above assume you qualify at 100%. The VA assigns each veteran a benefit percentage from 40% up to 100% based on cumulative active-duty service after September 10, 2001, and that percentage applies to tuition, housing, and books alike.1Veterans Affairs. How We Determine Your Post-9/11 GI Bill Coverage At 70% eligibility, the VA covers 70% of your in-state tuition, 70% of the online housing allowance, and 70% of the book stipend. At 80% eligibility, the book stipend works out to about $33.34 per credit hour instead of $41.67.
You need at least 36 months of active duty (or a service-connected discharge after 30 continuous days) to qualify at the full 100%. Check your Certificate of Eligibility from the VA for your exact percentage. Every published rate assumes 100%, so if your tier is lower, adjust each number accordingly.
Montgomery GI Bill: A Flat Monthly Check
The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30) works nothing like Post-9/11. Instead of paying your school, the VA sends a flat stipend to you and you handle tuition yourself. The current full-time rate is $2,518.00 per month for veterans with at least three continuous years of active duty, or $2,043.00 per month for those with two to three years.6Veterans Affairs. Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30) Rates
The rate does not change based on the type of school or whether you attend online or in person. That flat structure favors cheap programs, where you keep whatever’s left after tuition, and hurts expensive ones, where you cover the gap. There is no separate housing allowance or book stipend under Chapter 30. If you are eligible for both programs, you can generally switch to Post-9/11, but the switch is irrevocable.
What Can Cut Your Payment
A few situations reliably shrink or eliminate what the GI Bill pays for online classes.
Dropping below more than half-time kills your housing allowance for the rest of the term. Withdrawing from a class after the semester starts can trigger a VA debt, because the VA recalculates benefits from the first day of the term and asks for the difference back. The VA does recognize “mitigating circumstances” (illness or death in your immediate family, sudden job transfer, loss of child care, unexpected military orders) that can reduce but not always eliminate the debt.7Veterans Affairs. How Your Reason for Withdrawing From a Class Affects Your VA Debt Without accepted mitigating circumstances, you owe the full amount back to day one.
Missing your monthly enrollment verification also stops payments. The VA requires you to verify enrollment each month through VA.gov, the Ask VA portal, or by phone; a gap suspends housing payments and can create a debt if the VA later finds you were overpaid.8Veterans Affairs. GI Bill Enrollment Verification FAQs Before changing your schedule, talk to your school’s certifying official; they can tell you exactly how the change will hit your rate of pursuit, housing allowance, and any potential debt.
