Through the Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood program, Child Care Aware of America covers up to $2,000 per month per child for full-time care and up to $1,000 per month per child for part-time care. It does not pay the full bill. Instead, it pays the difference between a monthly parent fee set by the Department of Defense (based on your household income) and what your provider charges, as long as the provider’s rate stays under the cap. What you actually pay depends on your income category, whether your installation is designated high-cost, and your provider’s rate.1Child Care Aware of America. FY26 MCCYN Parent Fees
How the Coverage Is Calculated
The Department of Defense assigns each family a Total Family Income (TFI) category, which sets a fixed monthly parent fee. The program then pays the provider the difference between that parent fee and the provider’s monthly rate, capped at $2,000 for full-time or $1,000 for part-time care. If the provider charges more than the cap, you pay your parent fee plus the entire overage.1Child Care Aware of America. FY26 MCCYN Parent Fees
A worked example. A family in TFI Category I has a full-time parent fee of $234. If their provider charges $1,500, the program pays $1,266 and the family pays $234. If the same provider instead charges $2,300, the program still only covers up to $2,000, so the family pays $234 plus the $300 overage, or $534 total.
A minimum threshold also applies. For Air Force and Marine Corps families, if the gap between the provider’s fee and the parent fee is less than $25 per month, no assistance is issued.2Child Care Aware of America. What Families Pay By Income
Monthly parent fees are set by TFI category and by whether the installation is in a basic or high-cost area. Effective January 2026, the DoD expanded the schedule from 11 to 12 income brackets, adding a new top category for families earning more than $175,000.4Child Care Aware of America. SY 2025-2026 Fee Policy Notice
For full-time care, monthly parent fees run from $234 in Category I (families earning up to $45,000, basic area) to $1,062 in Category XII (families earning $175,001 or more, high-cost area). Part-time parent fees run from $126 to $573 across the same categories.1Child Care Aware of America. FY26 MCCYN Parent Fees
Sample full-time monthly parent fees:
- Category I ($1–$45,000): $234 basic, $242 high-cost
- Category IV ($65,001–$77,500): $382 basic, $394 high-cost
- Category VIII ($115,001–$130,000): $672 basic, $698 high-cost
- Category XII ($175,001+): $1,023 basic, $1,062 high-cost
The high-cost designation raises your parent fee slightly but does not change the $2,000 provider rate cap. The FY2026 high-cost list includes installations such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Travis AFB, Hanscom AFB, Fort Belvoir, Fort Meade, Camp Pendleton, NAVBASE San Diego, Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Pentagon, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency headquarters, among others.1Child Care Aware of America. When the Cap Shifts
A meal allowance pilot can move the numbers in either direction. If the provider does not include lunch or infant formula and the family supplies those, the monthly parent fee is reduced by $100. If the provider includes meals and charges more than $2,000, the cap rises to $2,100 per month.1Child Care Aware of America. FY26 MCCYN Parent Fees
The $2,000 full-time cap is also new. It rose from $1,800 as of January 1, 2026.4Child Care Aware of America. SY 2025-2026 Fee Policy Notice
A separate pilot, Child Care in Your Home (CCYH), uses different caps for in-home care tied to nontraditional work schedules: $1,800 per month for full-time care of 30 or more hours per week, and $900 per month for a school-age sibling in before or after school care. Care beyond 60 hours per week is not covered, and families pay any overtime, non-child-care duties, and amounts above the caps.5Child Care Aware of America. Understanding CCYH Fee Assistance
What the Money Applies To
MCCYN fee assistance covers full-day care, part-day care, before and after school care, and summer camp. Each is a distinct category within the program rather than a variation on part-time.6MilitaryChildCare.com. MCCYN FAQ Coverage runs from birth through age 12. Non-Accredited Areas: MCCYN-PLUS
Standard MCCYN requires providers to hold national accreditation from a DoD-approved body. Where nationally accredited care is not available, the MCCYN-PLUS pilot extends the same fee assistance to providers participating in their state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System. The rate caps and coverage are identical to standard MCCYN.12Military OneSource. MCCYN-PLUS Child Care Program

Who The Coverage Reaches
MCCYN serves active duty families across the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, along with DoD civilians and U.S. Secret Service personnel. The core eligibility rule is that the family cannot access military-operated child care, usually because of waitlists or distance from an installation.14MilitaryChildCare.com. MCCYN Overview Families within 15 miles or 20 minutes of an installation program must have an active request on MilitaryChildCare.com before off-base fee assistance can start.15Child Care Aware of America. National Guard and Reserve members qualify when activated. For Army Guard and Reservists, Title 10 or Title 32 orders of more than 30 consecutive days trigger eligibility.16Department of Defense.
