Breakdown cover in the UK typically costs between £20 and £170 a year, and how much you pay for breakdown cover depends mostly on the provider you choose and how much protection you want. Between January and March 2026, half of customers quoted through comparison sites were offered prices below £23 a month, with most annual policies landing under £232.1Compare the Market. Breakdown Cover At the cheap end, a basic roadside-only policy from a budget provider can cost as little as £28 a year. At the top end, comprehensive cover from the RAC or AA can run above £150.2What Car?. Which Is the Best Breakdown Service
What Different Providers Charge
Prices vary sharply between providers for broadly equivalent cover. What Car? gathered quotes using the same driver profile (a 59-year-old woman in Kent, 2014 Mini Paceman) and found this spread, from local roadside-only cover up to a national policy with home start and onward travel:2What Car?. Which Is the Best Breakdown Service
- Emergency Assist: £28 to £35
- Cover My Breakdown: £29 to £39
- Britannia Rescue: £33 to £102
- Green Flag: £42 to £64
- AA: £72 to £135
- RAC: £67 to £175
Those numbers shift with the driver’s age, postcode, and vehicle, so treat them as a guide rather than a price list. The pattern holds, though: budget providers like Emergency Assist and Cover My Breakdown charge a fraction of what the AA and RAC ask for similar protection.
AA
The AA advertises three main packages. As of mid-2026, with a 33% new-customer discount running to 30 June 2026, introductory monthly prices start at:3The AA. Breakdown Cover
- Roadside and at home: from £8 a month
- Roadside, at home, and national recovery: from £11.35 a month
- Roadside, at home, national recovery, and onward travel: from £15.10 a month
All AA tiers include unlimited callouts, though repeat callouts for the same fault within 28 days require proof of a permanent repair. Electric vehicle cover is standard. Parts and garage cover (up to £535 per claim with a £35 excess, claimable five times a year) and tyre cover can be added on top.4The AA. Parts and Garage Cover
RAC
The RAC runs four tiers on a 12-month contract, with at least 10% of new single-vehicle customers paying these starting prices:5RAC. Breakdown Cover
- Basic: from £5.29 a month (five callouts, roadside only)
- Standard: from £8.99 a month (adds national recovery, home cover, hire car, legal expenses)
- Extra: from £9.49 a month (Standard plus unlimited callouts)
- Complete: from £13.79 a month (full package, unlimited callouts)
Green Flag
Green Flag doesn’t publish fixed prices. It positions itself on a guarantee instead: it will cut a competitor’s renewal quote in half, and if its most similar UK vehicle cover isn’t at least 50% cheaper, it pays the difference.6Green Flag. Breakdown Cover Its five tiers (Rescue, Rescue Plus, Recovery, Recovery Plus, Euro Plus) follow the usual ladder from basic roadside help up to European cover, all with unlimited callouts and home cover included from Rescue Plus upwards.
Budget Providers
Several smaller providers undercut the big three substantially:

- Start Rescue: five tiers from £31.58 a year for local recovery; its most popular nationwide policy with home start costs £55.12. A 10% multi-car discount applies.7Start Rescue. Breakdown Cover
- Sterling Insurance: aimed at older and classic cars with no upper age limit, from £25.42 a year.8Sterling Insurance. Breakdown Cover Older Cars
These providers typically dispatch independent garages and recovery firms rather than running their own fleets, which can mean longer waits. What Car?’s reliability survey found independent operators left 16.7% of customers waiting two hours or more.2What Car?. Which Is the Best Breakdown Service
How Each Level of Cover Changes the Price
Policies are sold in tiers, and each added service raises the premium. The standard progression:
- Roadside assistance: a patrol attempts repair at the roadside; failing that, the vehicle is towed to a nearby garage, usually within 10 to 15 miles. Home breakdowns aren’t covered. This is the cheapest tier.
- Home start: extends roadside help to breakdowns at or near your home, where a significant share of callouts happen.9wecovr. Breakdown Cover Add-Ons Are They Worth the Extra Cost
- National recovery: if the car can’t be fixed roadside, the provider takes it, the driver, and passengers to any single UK destination.
- Onward travel: a hire car, overnight hotel, or public transport costs when the vehicle has to stay at a garage.
- European cover: assistance abroad. The RAC’s European cover starts from £3.57 a day on a 14-day trip, and Britannia Rescue bundles UK and European assistance for £152 a year.10RAC. European Breakdown Cover11Britannia Rescue. Breakdown Cover Compare
Britannia Rescue’s published rates show how the tiers stack up: £33 a year for roadside only, £66 with home start, £73 for national recovery alone, £102 for the full UK package with onward travel, and £152 with European cover added.11Britannia Rescue. Breakdown Cover Compare
What Changes Your Individual Quote
Beyond the tier you pick, a few factors move the price:
- Vehicle age, make, and model. Older cars attract higher premiums, and a few policies (mainly European cover) decline vehicles over 15 to 20 years old.12Compare Breakdown Cover. Older Vehicle Breakdown Cover
- Driver age and postcode. Quotes from the AA, RAC, and Green Flag all vary on these.2What Car?. Which Is the Best Breakdown Service
- Payment method. Paying annually is almost always cheaper than paying monthly, since monthly plans carry interest.1Compare the Market. Breakdown Cover
- Voluntary excess. A higher excess at claim time reduces the annual premium.13MoneySupermarket. Breakdown Cover
- Bundling. Breakdown cover added to a car insurance policy averages just £28 a year, usually less than a standalone policy from the same provider.13MoneySupermarket. Breakdown Cover
Ways to Pay Less
The biggest single saving comes from haggling at renewal. Providers routinely inflate renewal quotes by 25% to 50% compared with new-customer rates.14Utterly Covered. What to Do When Breakdown Cover Expires Breakdown cover was not included in the FCA’s 2022 pricing reforms that banned the loyalty penalty on car and home insurance, so providers can still charge existing customers more.15The Guardian. Car Insurance Costs Rise AA Auto Renewal
A January 2026 MoneySavingExpert poll found that 91% of RAC customers, 90% of AA customers, and 80% of Green Flag customers who tried to negotiate a lower renewal price succeeded, with reported savings between £96 and more than £120 in a single call.16MoneySavingExpert. Top Breakdown Existing Customer Tips The approach: phone, say you’re ready to leave, ask to match the new-customer price.
Other ways to cut the cost:
- Check whether you already have cover. Packaged bank accounts from Nationwide (£18 a month), Halifax (£19 a month), and the Co-operative Bank (£18 a month) often include RAC or AA breakdown cover alongside travel and phone insurance. New car warranties sometimes include it too; Hyundai, for one, provides roadside assistance for the life of the vehicle so long as it’s serviced at an authorised dealer.17Which?. Best Packaged Bank Accounts18Hyundai UK. Benefits
- Don’t buy more than you need. If you rarely drive more than 20 miles from home, local cover at £28 to £33 a year may be enough. Dropping onward travel and European cover can roughly halve the premium.
- Insure more than one car on a single policy. Start Rescue offers 10% off for multi-car cover, and MoneySupermarket notes that one multi-car policy generally beats separate ones.7Start Rescue. Breakdown Cover19MoneySupermarket. Cheaper Breakdown Cover
What a Callout Costs If You Have No Cover
Paying for a one-off rescue is expensive enough to put cheap annual cover in perspective. Typical pay-on-use costs run £75 to £150 for the callout (higher on motorways, at night, and in London), plus around £1.50 a mile for towing.2What Car?. Which Is the Best Breakdown Service One estimate puts a 90-mile tow with callout at roughly £345, more than several years of annual cover.9wecovr. Breakdown Cover Add-Ons Are They Worth the Extra Cost
Non-members phoning the RAC directly face a charge of around £160. Green Flag charges about £72 for an emergency callout.20MoneySavingExpert Forums. Broke Down With No Breakdown Cover Signing up at the roadside isn’t a workaround either; most providers impose a 24-hour waiting period before a new member’s first claim.
Electric Vehicles Don’t Cost More
EV owners pay no premium surcharge. The AA, RAC, and most other UK providers include electric vehicles as standard.21The AA. Electric Cars Breakdown Cover The main difference is recovery method: EVs usually can’t be towed with wheels on the ground and need a flatbed, which all the major providers now operate.22GRIDSERVE.
