How Much Does a Teenager Get Back in Taxes: Withholding and W-2

Most teenagers get back every dollar of federal income tax their employer withheld during the year. For 2026, a dependent whose only income is from a job owes zero federal income tax as long as earnings stay below $16,100, so the full amount in Box 2 of the W-2 comes back as a refund once a return is filed.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 How much a teenager gets back in taxes depends on three things: how much was withheld, whether any of the money came from self-employment, and whether there was investment income on the side.

Why the Refund Usually Equals the Withholding

When you take a job, your employer uses Form W-4 to decide how much federal income tax to pull from each paycheck. That money is sent to the IRS as a prepayment. At year-end, you file a return that compares what was withheld to what you actually owe, and the IRS returns the difference.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds

For a teenager claimed as a dependent, the standard deduction usually wipes out the entire tax bill. In 2026 that deduction equals the greater of $1,350 or your earned income plus $450, up to a maximum of $16,100.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Earn $6,000 over the summer and your deduction is $6,450, which covers every dollar. Earn $15,000 across the year and you still fall under the $16,100 cap. Either way, taxable income is zero, tax owed is zero, and the refund is whatever your employer withheld.

Reading Your W-2 to See the Number

Your employer sends Form W-2 by the end of January. Box 1 shows total wages. Box 2 shows total federal income tax withheld.4Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) If Box 1 is under $16,100 and you have no other income, Box 2 is your refund.

A worked example: you earned $5,200 during the year and your employer withheld $390 in federal income tax. Your standard deduction is $5,650 ($5,200 plus $450), which covers your wages entirely. Tax owed is $0. Refund is $390.

Some teenagers see nothing in Box 2 at all. That happens when a small paycheck falls below the withholding threshold, or when you claimed exempt on your W-4. No withholding means no refund to collect, which is not a problem so long as you owed nothing.

What Does Not Come Back

A federal income tax refund does not include Social Security or Medicare taxes. Your employer withholds 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare from every paycheck, and those amounts stay with the government regardless of how little you earned.5Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Tax/Medicare Tax and Self-Employment On $5,200 of wages, about $397 goes to those two taxes and does not come back. State income tax withholding, if any, is handled separately through a state return.

Gig Work and Side Hustles Change the Math

Money earned through freelancing, tutoring, lawn care, reselling online, or driving for a delivery app is treated as self-employment income, not wages. If net self-employment earnings hit $400 or more, you owe self-employment tax and have to file a return, even when total income is well below the standard deduction.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax

Self-employment tax is the same Social Security and Medicare contribution an employer would normally split with you. Working for yourself, you pay the full 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security on earnings up to $184,500 in 2026, plus 2.9% for Medicare.7Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)8Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base It is reported on Schedule SE.

The result can catch a teenager off guard. Earn $2,000 mowing lawns with no other income and your federal income tax is zero, but self-employment tax runs about $283. Instead of a refund, you have a bill.

Investment Income Can Shrink the Refund

Interest from a savings account, dividends, and capital gains are unearned income, and they follow different rules. A dependent has to file if unearned income tops $1,350 in 2026.9Internal Revenue Service. Rev. Proc. 2025-32, Inflation Adjustments for 2026 Once unearned income passes $2,700, the Kiddie Tax kicks in on the excess, and that portion is taxed at the parents’ rate rather than the child’s.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 553, Tax on a Childs Investment and Other Unearned Income (Kiddie Tax) Form 8615 goes with the return. A teenager with meaningful investment income can end up owing tax that eats into what would otherwise be a full refund of the wage withholding.
