How Much Does a Canadian Passport Cost? Fees, Rush, Replacement

A Canadian passport costs between $58.50 and $266.25, and the price depends on the applicant’s age, whether you want a 5-year or 10-year book, and whether you apply from within Canada or from abroad. Fees went up on March 31, 2026, so anything you read quoting the older numbers is out of date. Add-ons like expedited pickup, replacement fees, photos, and mailing can push the total higher.

Fees if You Apply Inside Canada

Applying from within Canada gets you the lowest rates. As of March 31, 2026:1Government of Canada. Passport and Travel Document Fee Changes

  • 10-year adult passport (age 16 and up): $163.50
  • 5-year adult passport (age 16 and up): $122.50
  • Child passport, 5-year (age 0 to 15): $58.50

Children under 16 are only eligible for the 5-year book. Adults can choose either length, and the 10-year works out cheaper per year of validity (about $16.35 versus $24.50).

Applications received before March 31, 2026 pay the old rates: $160 for the 10-year adult, $120 for the 5-year adult, and $57 for a child passport.2Government of Canada. Pay Your Passport Fee in Canada

Costs People Forget to Budget For

The application fee isn’t the whole bill. A few smaller costs add up quickly.

Passport photos are required for every application. Professional photos in Canada typically run $10 to $20 at pharmacies and photo centres. You can take a digital photo yourself for an online renewal, but it has to meet strict specifications for size, lighting, and background.

Mailing costs apply if you submit by mail. Canada Post’s Registered Mail runs about $14.59 for a standard letter and prepaid Xpresspost envelopes around $26.80. That’s one direction only, so factor in return postage if you need it.

A guarantor is required for most applications. Your guarantor must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older who holds a valid or recently expired Canadian passport and has known you at least two years.7Government of Canada. References and Guarantors for Canadian Passport and Other Travel Documents This is not a paid service. Family members qualify, so it usually costs nothing. Applicants outside Canada can use a locally licensed professional such as a doctor, lawyer, or pharmacist as guarantor.

Accepted Payment Methods

For applications submitted in Canada, you can pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or JCB), by a prepaid card on those networks, or by debit (Visa Debit or Debit MasterCard) for in-person transactions.3Government of Canada. Pay Your Passport Fee – Canadians Outside Canada and the United States Certified cheques and money orders are also accepted, in Canadian dollars, for the exact amount, and made payable to the “Receiver General for Canada.”

Personal cheques and cash are not accepted. If you pay online, print the receipt and send it with your application. One detail matters for anyone applying near the fee-change date: if you mail an application on or after May 1, 2026 using the old (lower) fee amount, the government will return it and ask you to resubmit with the correct payment.1Government of Canada.
