How Much Do Reserves Get Paid a Month: Drill Pay and Allowances

At the most common enlisted grades, Reserve and National Guard members earn about $321 to $616 for a standard one-weekend-a-month drill under the 2026 pay tables. So a rough answer to how much reserves get paid a month sits in that range for junior and mid-career enlisted members, before adding annual training pay, special pays, and tax-free allowances. The exact figure turns on your pay grade, your years of service, and how many drill periods your unit schedules that month. Every branch uses the same federal formula, so an Army Reserve Specialist and a Navy Reserve Petty Officer Third Class at the same grade and longevity take home the same drill pay.

How the Monthly Amount Is Built

Reserve pay is measured in “drill periods.” Federal law fixes each drill period at exactly 1/30th of the monthly basic pay for an active-duty member of the same grade and time in service.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 37 USC 206 – Reserves; Members of National Guard: Inactive-Duty Training A drill period must run at least two hours.

A normal drill weekend is four periods: two on Saturday, two on Sunday. That makes one weekend worth 4/30ths of a full month of active-duty base pay. Miss a period and your check drops by that fraction. Pick up extra periods and it climbs.

Ready Reserve members are required to complete at least 48 drill periods a year, plus at least 14 days of annual training.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 10147 – Ready Reserve: Training Requirements Forty-eight periods works out to twelve four-period weekends, which is the familiar one-weekend-a-month schedule. National Guard units follow the same 48-period minimum.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 32 USC 502 – Required Drills and Field Exercises So in a normal month, “monthly pay” and “one weekend of drill pay” are the same number.

2026 Drill Pay by Enlisted Grade

Basic pay rose 3.8 percent on January 1, 2026. The figures below show 2026 monthly basic pay and the resulting pay for a standard four-drill weekend at selected enlisted grades.4Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Basic Pay – Enlisted Effective January 1, 2026

  • E-1, under 2 years: $2,407.20 monthly basic pay, $321.00 per four-drill weekend
  • E-3, under 2 years: $2,836.80 monthly, $378.24 per weekend
  • E-4, under 2 years: $3,142.20 monthly, $418.96 per weekend
  • E-4, over 4 years: $3,658.50 monthly, $487.80 per weekend
  • E-5, over 6 years: $4,110.00 monthly, $548.00 per weekend
  • E-6, over 8 years: $4,612.80 monthly, $615.04 per weekend
  • E-7, over 12 years: $5,591.70 monthly, $745.56 per weekend
  • E-9, over 20 years: $8,105.10 monthly, $1,080.68 per weekend

An E-1 with fewer than four months of active duty is on a lower basic pay rate of $2,225.70, which puts a four-drill weekend at roughly $296.76.4Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Basic Pay – Enlisted Effective January 1, 2026

Longevity raises are automatic. Early on they hit at the 2-, 3-, and 4-year marks; after that they space out to every two years or more. An E-4 with over 2 years earns $3,303.00 a month, while an E-4 with over 4 years earns $3,658.50, a difference of about $47 per drill weekend.4Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Officers and Warrant Officers

Commissioned officers (O-1 through O-10) and warrant officers (W-1 through W-5) use the same 1/30th formula from higher base rates.5Defense Finance and Accounting Service. The Two-Week Annual Training Check

Annual training is not paid at the drill-period rate. When you report, you go on active-duty status and earn the full daily active-duty rate: monthly basic pay divided by 30, for every day of the training. For an E-5 with over 6 years at $4,110.00 a month, that is roughly $137 a day, or about $1,918 over a 14-day period.

Annual training also opens up allowances you may not see on a drill weekend, including full-rate Basic Allowance for Subsistence. If your orders run longer than 30 consecutive days, you shift to locality-based housing allowances at the same rates as active-duty members in your area, rather than the flat reserve housing rate.7Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Full mobilization works the same way. When you are activated for a deployment, you receive the same base pay, allowances, and benefits as any active-duty member of your grade for the length of the orders.

What Can Push the Monthly Check Higher

Some jobs and skills earn additional monthly pay on top of basic drill pay. For reservists, these special pays are prorated using the same 1/30th-per-period rule.

  • Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay: up to $150 a month for duties like demolition, toxic fuels, or chemical munitions. Military freefall parachutists can earn up to $225 a month and divers up to $240 a month.8Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay
  • Flight Pay: $110 to $250 a month for crew members, up to $150 a month for non-crew members in aviation duties.8Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay
  • Parachute Duty Pay: up to $150 a month for static-line jumps.8Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay
  • Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus: paid monthly to members who pass a qualifying language proficiency test.

Because of the 1/30th proration, a reservist with a $150 monthly hazardous duty incentive who completes four drill periods gets $20 added to that weekend’s pay. You usually have to keep meeting the qualification (jump currency, language testing, and so on) to keep the money.

Reserve components also pay lump-sum enlistment and reenlistment bonuses in high-demand specialties. Amounts vary by branch and skill. Navy Reserve enlistment bonuses for fiscal year 2026 run up to $20,000 for E-1 through E-4, up to $15,000 for E-5, and up to $10,000 for E-6. Bonuses generally pay out in installments tied to training milestones or years of obligated service.

Tax-Free Allowances

Allowances for food and housing are exempt from federal income tax, state income tax, and Social Security taxes, so a dollar of allowance is worth more than a dollar of basic pay.9Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Tax Exempt Allowances

The Basic Allowance for Subsistence covers meals. In 2026 the full monthly rate is $476.95 for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers, and it is prorated by drill periods on a normal drill weekend.10Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Basic Allowance for Subsistence

For short-duration active duty of 30 days or fewer, including typical annual training orders, housing is paid as a flat rate called BAH Reserve Component/Transit. It does not vary by ZIP code the way active-duty housing allowance does.7Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Different Types of BAH In 2026, without-dependents rates range from $811.50 a month at E-1 to $1,494.90 at E-9. With-dependents rates are higher, running $1,219.50 at E-4 and $1,971.60 at E-9.

What Comes Out Before You See the Money

The number that lands in your account is smaller than the gross figures above because of standard deductions.

  • Federal and state income tax withholding on basic drill pay, based on your W-4 elections.
  • FICA: 6.2 percent Social Security and 1.45 percent Medicare on basic pay. Allowances like BAS and BAH are excluded.9Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Tax Exempt Allowances
  • TRICARE Reserve Select premiums, if enrolled: $57.88 a month for individual coverage or $286.66 a month for family coverage in 2026.11TRICARE Newsroom. Learn Your 2026 TRICARE Health Plan Costs
  • SGLI: $25.00 a month for the maximum $500,000 coverage, plus $1.00 for traumatic injury coverage, for $26.00 total. You can elect less coverage or decline.12Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Servicemembers Group Life Insurance
  • Thrift Savings Plan contributions at whatever percentage you elect.

The bite is real at lower grades. An E-4 grossing about $419 for a weekend could lose $30 to $40 to FICA alone, plus insurance premiums and tax withholding, before the deposit clears.

When the Pay Actually Arrives

Reserve drill pay does not follow the active-duty 1st-and-15th payday. Your unit certifies attendance after the drill, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service processes the pay from there. Units are expected to submit pay records within 24 to 72 hours of a drill weekend, and payments generally reach the bank about 10 days after processing.13U.S. Army Reserve.
