How Much Can You Make Without Getting a 1099?

Starting with the 2026 tax year, a business generally has to issue you a 1099 once it pays you $2,000 or more during the calendar year for services, rent, prizes, or similar income. That answers most of what people mean when they ask how much you can make without getting a 1099, but the full picture depends on the type of income. Interest, dividends, and royalties still trigger a form at just $10. Payment apps follow their own rule and don’t send a 1099-K unless you clear both $20,000 and 200 transactions. And none of these thresholds change what you owe in tax: every dollar of taxable income belongs on your return whether a 1099 shows up or not.

The $2,000 Threshold for Services, Rent, and Similar Payments

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill signed into law in mid-2025 raised the longstanding $600 reporting threshold to $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025. Under the amended version of 26 U.S.C. § 6041, any business that pays you $2,000 or more in a calendar year for rent, services, prizes, medical services, or other taxable income must file an information return with the IRS and send you a copy.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6041 – Information at Source Inflation adjustments to the amount begin in 2027.

For freelancers and independent contractors, the relevant form is the 1099-NEC. The service-payment rules under 26 U.S.C. § 6041A now reference the $2,000 figure in § 6041 rather than stating their own dollar amount.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6041A – Returns Regarding Payments of Remuneration for Services and Direct Sales The threshold is cumulative across the year and per payor. A client who pays you $500 in March and $1,600 in November has crossed the line and must report the full $2,100. Two different clients who each pay you $1,500 have not.

The same $2,000 bar applies to the categories reported on Form 1099-MISC: rent paid for office space or equipment, prizes and awards, and medical or health care payments. If a business rents your commercial property for $1,800 across the year, no 1099-MISC is required for that amount.

One boundary matters here. These rules apply only when a business makes the payment in the course of its trade or business. If a neighbor pays you $3,000 to remodel their kitchen, that’s a personal expense for them and no 1099 is required, no matter how large the payment.3Internal Revenue Service. Reporting Payments to Independent Contractors The same work performed for a property management company falls squarely inside the reporting rules.

Royalties, Interest, and Dividends Still Trigger at $10

Passive income kept its much lower thresholds. Recent legislation didn’t touch these categories, so you can expect a form for very small amounts.

Because these forms are generated automatically by institutional software, they usually arrive by early February. The low threshold is why even a modest savings account produces a 1099-INT most years.

Payment Apps and Card Processors Follow Different Rules

Payment platforms like PayPal, Venmo, and Etsy fall under Form 1099-K, and the rule is not $2,000. These third-party settlement organizations must report only when both conditions are met in the same year: total payments to you exceed $20,000, and the number of individual transactions exceeds 200.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050W – Returns Relating to Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions Miss either one and no form is required.

The much-publicized $600 threshold that was supposed to take effect under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 no longer exists. The IRS delayed enforcement for several years, and the One, Big, Beautiful Bill permanently restored the $20,000-and-200-transaction standard as if the lower figure had never been enacted.8Internal Revenue Service. Credit and debit card processors work differently. Card settlement has no minimum dollar amount and no minimum transaction count, so a 1099-K can report those payments regardless of size. The $20,000/200 exception applies only to third-party settlement organizations, not to card processors.

When No 1099 Is Issued Even Above the Threshold

Crossing the $2,000 line doesn’t always produce a form. The broadest exemption covers payments to C-corporations and S-corporations, including LLCs taxed as either. If you operate through one of those entity types, most clients won’t send a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC

Two exceptions to the corporate exemption catch people off guard. Attorney fees are reported regardless of how the law firm is structured, so a business paying $2,000 or more to an incorporated law practice still files a 1099-NEC. Gross legal settlement proceeds are reported in a separate box on Form 1099-MISC. Medical and health care payments to corporations also remain reportable.9Internal Revenue Service. If a payment does trigger a form, expect the recipient copy by January 31 following the tax year.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC If you know a payor crossed the $2,000 threshold and February arrives with no form in hand, contact the payor rather than waiting.

You Still Owe Tax Below the Reporting Threshold

This is the part that gets people in trouble. The $2,000, the $10, and the $20,000/200 figures are reporting obligations for the payor. None of them is a tax-free allowance for you. A client who pays you $1,500 in 2026 has no obligation to file a 1099-NEC, and you still owe income tax on every dollar of that $1,500.

Self-employment triggers filing at a much lower number. If your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 in a tax year, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax, which funds Social Security and Medicare.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1402 – Definitions That $400 figure hasn’t changed in decades and catches a lot of side income that people assume is too small to matter. The calculation runs on Schedule SE after you determine net profit on Schedule C.

Estimated Tax Payments

Independent contractors don’t have taxes withheld from their pay, so the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments. You generally owe them if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax after withholding and refundable credits, and your withholding will cover less than 90% of your 2026 liability or 100% of your 2025 liability, whichever is smaller.11Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Form 1040-ES – Estimated Tax for Individuals If your 2025 adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, the 100% safe harbor rises to 110%. Missing a quarter produces an underpayment penalty that functions like interest on the shortfall.

What Happens When Your Return Doesn’t Match

The IRS automatically compares the 1099 forms it receives against what taxpayers report. When the numbers don’t line up, the agency sends a CP2000 notice proposing changes to your return and a recalculated bill.12Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice It isn’t technically an audit, but the effect is similar: agree and pay the difference with interest, or respond with documentation. These notices often arrive 12 to 18 months after filing. Keeping organized records of all income, including amounts below any 1099 threshold, is the simplest way to respond if one shows up.
