How Much BAH Do You Get for Online Classes? The $1,169 Ceiling

If you take all of your classes online under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, your BAH for online classes is a flat monthly housing allowance of up to $1,169.00 for the academic year ending July 31, 2026.1Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates The figure is the same in every zip code because it’s pegged to 50 percent of the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents, not to your local rate. Your actual check can be less, depending on how long you served on active duty and how many credits you carry.

Where the $1,169 Figure Comes From

In-person students get a housing allowance based on the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at their campus zip code, which swings widely by location. Online-only students get one national figure instead: half the national average BAH for that same pay grade and dependency status.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 3313 – Educational Assistance: Amount; Payment From August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2026, that flat rate maxes out at $1,169.00 a month.1Veterans Affairs. The VA resets GI Bill housing rates every August 1 to match new Department of Defense BAH tables. After August 1, 2026, a new figure will apply, so check the VA’s current rate page before you budget.

What Reduces Your Payment Below the Ceiling

Two things scale the $1,169 down: your eligibility tier and your rate of pursuit. Both are percentages, and both apply. A veteran at the 80 percent tier taking a 75 percent course load receives 80 percent of 75 percent of $1,169.

Eligibility Tier

The VA assigns your tier based on cumulative qualifying active duty after September 10, 2001:1Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates

  • 36 months or more: 100%
  • 30 to 35 months: 90%
  • 24 to 29 months: 80%
  • 18 to 23 months: 70%
  • 6 to 17 months: 60%
  • 90 days to 5 months: 50%

A veteran at the 60 percent tier taking online classes full-time receives 60 percent of $1,169, or about $701 a month. That single factor is why two students in the same online program can end up with very different checks.

Rate of Pursuit

Your credit load then scales the payment again. For a typical undergraduate program:3Veterans Affairs. Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees

  • 12 or more credit hours: full-time (100%)
  • 9 to 11 credit hours: three-quarter time
  • 6 to 8 credit hours: half-time

You must be above half-time to receive any housing allowance at all.1Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates Drop to half-time or below and the VA pays $0 in MHA for that term. Graduate and non-standard programs may define full-time differently, so confirm with your school’s certifying official.

The VA rounds your rate of pursuit to the nearest 10 percent.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 3313 – Educational Assistance: Amount; Payment A schedule that works out to 75 percent gets rounded up to 80 percent for payment.

One In-Person Class Can Change the Rate Entirely

If you attend even one class in person and take the rest online, the VA classifies you as a residential student, not a distance learner. Your housing allowance shifts from the flat $1,169 to the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at the zip code of the campus where you attend that in-person class.4Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates – Section: Monthly Housing Allowance

In a high-cost metro area, that location-based rate can run hundreds of dollars a month above the online rate. You have to live close enough to attend, and the class has to fit your degree plan, but if the option exists it’s worth running the numbers before you commit to a fully online schedule.

Who Gets No Housing Allowance

Some GI Bill users receive no MHA even though they’re using Post-9/11 benefits:1Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates

  • Active duty service members, who already receive BAH through military pay.
  • Spouses using transferred benefits while the service member is on active duty.
  • Students enrolled at half-time or below.
  • Students in correspondence or flight training programs.

You Won’t Get Paid During Breaks

The VA does not pay MHA between terms. If spring semester ends in May and summer classes start in June, you receive nothing for the gap days when you weren’t enrolled.1Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates Winter breaks, spring breaks, and summer gaps all work the same way.

When a term doesn’t cover an entire calendar month, that month’s housing payment is prorated to the days you were actually enrolled.5Department of Veterans Affairs. Monthly Enrollment Verification Is Required

Post-9/11 GI Bill recipients have to verify enrollment at the end of every month they’re in school, confirming credit hours and the start and end dates of that month’s enrollment.6Veterans Affairs. Verify Your School Enrollment You can verify online at VA.gov, by responding to a VA text, by email, through Ask VA, or by phone. The VA will not ask for personal information like a Social Security number by text.

When the Money Arrives

Housing allowances are paid in arrears by direct deposit. The payment that lands in early November covers October enrollment. Your school’s certifying official submits your enrollment, and the VA wants that certification at least 30 days before classes start to avoid delays.8Veterans Affairs. GI Bill and Other VA Education Benefit Payments FAQs First-time users should expect the initial payment to take longer while the original application is processed. Adding or dropping a course mid-term triggers an updated certification and can shift payment timing briefly.
