The IRS processes an average of about 730,000 tax returns and other forms each day, based on the more than 266 million filings it handled during fiscal year 2024.1Internal Revenue Service. SOI Tax Stats – IRS Data Book That figure spreads the annual total evenly across the calendar, which is not how the work actually arrives. On a typical summer day the count runs well below it. During the weeks around April 15, it runs several times higher.
The Daily Average, and Why It’s Misleading
The 730,000-per-day figure comes from dividing the 266 million returns and forms the IRS processed in fiscal year 2024 across 365 days.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Fiscal Year 2024 Data Book Describing Agencys Activities Limit the math to the roughly 250 business days the agency operates at full capacity and the average rises above 1,060,000 per day.
Neither number describes a real day at the IRS. The agency’s workload is heavily concentrated into a few months of the year, so any single-day estimate depends entirely on when you look.
How the Number Changes Across the Year
Filing season, which opens in late January, produces the most dramatic swings.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season Online Tools and Resources Help With Tax Filing Early 2026 data shows the pace clearly: in the week ending February 20, 2026, the IRS received roughly 9.7 million individual income tax returns, close to 1.4 million per calendar day from individual filers alone.4Internal Revenue Service. Filing Season Statistics for Week Ending Feb 20, 2026 Add business filings, employment returns, and other documents and total daily volume during those weeks runs considerably higher.
The pace intensifies as April 15 approaches, and the final days of the season produce some of the heaviest single-day counts of the year. A second, smaller surge follows on October 15, the deadline for taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension. The IRS estimated more than 20 million returns were expected by that date for the 2024 tax year.5Internal Revenue Service. IRS Reminds Taxpayers Who Filed for Extensions of the Oct 15 Deadline Outside those windows, daily volume drops well below the annual average.
Electronic Filing Is What Makes the Volume Possible
About 94 percent of individual returns now arrive electronically, leaving roughly 6 percent, around 11 million, on paper.6National Taxpayer Advocate. National Taxpayer Advocate Delivers Annual Report to Congress That split is what allows the daily throughput to reach the numbers it does.
The Modernized e-File system receives electronic returns and returns acknowledgments in near real-time rather than waiting for scheduled processing cycles.7Internal Revenue Service. Modernized e-File (MeF) Overview Because the data arrives already structured, the system validates it against existing records without human handling.
Paper is a different operation. Staff open envelopes, sort documents, and enter data by hand. At the start of fiscal year 2026, the IRS Submission Processing function had 7,775 employees on hand and approval to hire another 2,200 for the filing season, including tax examiners and clerks assigned to paper intake.8Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. The Internal Revenue Services Readiness for the 2026 Filing Season Paper returns still take weeks longer to enter the system than electronic ones. Under the Paperless Processing Initiative, the agency aimed to digitally process all incoming paper documents by filing season 2026, which lets scanned data move through downstream systems at electronic speeds once entered.9Internal Revenue Service. What’s Counted in the Daily Total
The 266 million figure covers far more than individual income tax returns. It includes filings from every category of taxpayer the IRS serves:
- Individual income tax returns (Form 1040), the largest single category by volume
- Corporate income tax returns from C-corporations and S-corporations
- Partnership returns reporting income that flows through to individual partners
- Employment tax returns from employers reporting payroll taxes withheld
- Estate and gift tax returns triggered by large transfers of wealth
- Annual returns from tax-exempt organizations
- International filings with cross-border elements
Information returns are counted separately. The FY 2024 Data Book notes the agency received almost 4.6 billion of them, documents like W-2s and 1099s sent by employers and financial institutions, on top of the 266 million tax returns and forms.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Fiscal Year 2024 Data Book Describing Agencys Activities Add those in and the daily average across all documents the agency handles reaches into the tens of millions.
What Processing Volume Means for Your Refund
For most filers, the practical question is how the daily pace affects the wait for a refund. The IRS issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days for taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit.10Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund Paper checks sent by mail can take six weeks or longer.11Internal Revenue Service. Volume alone is not always the reason a refund waits. By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February, even if the return was filed and accepted weeks earlier, and the hold applies to the entire refund rather than just the credit portion.12Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit That statutory hold accounts for millions of early-season returns that show as processed while the money waits.
Amended returns fall outside the fast lane entirely. Form 1040-X filings generally take 8 to 12 weeks to process, and in some cases up to 16 weeks, because they require additional review and cannot move through the automated systems that handle original e-filed returns.13Internal Revenue Service. Wheres My Amended Return The daily processing counts published by the IRS reflect a system built around electronic intake at scale, and the returns that sit outside that lane move on a different clock.
