How Many Items Can You Sell on Vinted Before Tax?

There is no item count that triggers a tax bill on Vinted. How many items you can sell on Vinted before tax comes into play is the wrong question, because tax turns on profit, not volume. Sell 300 shirts for less than you paid and you owe nothing. Sell one vintage jacket for more than you paid and you owe tax on that gain. Vinted only has to report your sales to the IRS once you exceed both $20,000 in gross payments and 200 transactions in a calendar year, but your obligation to report taxable income exists whether or not that form ever arrives.

Profit Is What Gets Taxed

Most Vinted sellers are cleaning out a closet. They bought a sweater at retail, wore it, and are now selling it secondhand for a fraction of the original price. That is a loss on a personal item. Losses on personal items aren’t deductible, but they aren’t taxable either. The money you received isn’t income because you didn’t come out ahead. This is sometimes called the garage sale rule, and it covers the vast majority of activity on the platform.

The math flips when an item sells for more than you paid. Buy a vintage jacket at a thrift store for $30, sell it on Vinted for $180, and the $150 difference is a capital gain you have to report.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 409, Capital Gains and Losses If you held the item more than a year, it qualifies for the lower long-term capital gains rates. A year or less, and the gain is taxed at your ordinary income rate.

So the honest answer to “how many items” is: as many as you want, provided each one sells below what you originally paid. One profitable sale creates a reporting obligation. A thousand break-even sales don’t.

The 1099-K Threshold Is Not a Tax Threshold

Payment platforms have to file Form 1099-K with the IRS once a seller crosses certain limits. For 2026, Vinted will only issue a 1099-K if your gross sales exceed $20,000 and you completed more than 200 transactions in the calendar year. Both conditions must be met.2Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K That’s a high bar, and most casual sellers will never hit it.

Here’s the part that trips people up: the 1099-K threshold controls when Vinted tells the IRS about your sales. It does not control when you owe tax. You are still required to report all taxable income on your return whether or not you receive the form.2Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K Someone who quietly clears $5,000 of profit reselling sneakers owes tax on that profit even though no 1099-K ever hits their mailbox.

When Vinted Becomes a Business in the IRS’s Eyes

Volume matters indirectly, because a large number of listings starts to look less like a closet cleanout and more like a business. The IRS treats hobby income and business income differently, and the difference is where sellers get into trouble.

No single factor decides it. The IRS weighs whether you keep organized records, whether you depend on the income, whether you put consistent time and effort into being profitable, and whether you’ve profited from similar activity before.3Internal Revenue Service. Here’s How to Tell the Difference Between a Hobby and a Business for Tax Purposes Occasionally selling items from your own closet reads as a hobby. Regularly sourcing inventory from thrift stores, staging photos, pricing strategically, and reinvesting proceeds reads as a business.

Hobby sellers report the income on Schedule 1 and, under current law, cannot deduct any of the costs they incurred to earn it.4Internal Revenue Service. Know the Difference Between a Hobby and a Business Business sellers report on Schedule C, where they can subtract the cost of goods, shipping supplies, mileage, and other legitimate expenses from their gross revenue. Business income also triggers self-employment tax, which hobby income does not.

Self-Employment Tax If You Cross Into Business

If your net profit from reselling exceeds $400 in a year, you owe self-employment tax on top of regular income tax.5Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center The rate is 15.3%, made up of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, and it covers both halves of what an employer would normally split with you. The tax applies to 92.35% of your net self-employment earnings, and you can deduct half of the self-employment tax when calculating adjusted gross income.

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in combined income and self-employment tax for the year, the IRS wants quarterly estimated payments rather than a single April payment. Missing those can produce underpayment penalties even if you pay in full at filing.

How to Report Vinted Sales

The right form depends on who you are and whether the sale made money.

Casual Seller, Everything Sold at a Loss

If every item went for less than you paid, and no 1099-K arrived, you generally don’t need to report anything. There was no taxable income.

If a 1099-K did arrive, the IRS has a record of the gross amount and expects to see it on your return. Report the gross proceeds on Schedule 1, Part I, Line 8z as “Other Income,” then enter an identical offsetting amount on Part II, Line 24z as an adjustment. The net effect on your taxable income is zero.6Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information

Casual Seller, One or More Items Sold at a Gain

Report the gain on Form 8949 and Schedule D.7Internal Revenue Service. What to Do With Form 1099-K The taxable amount is the difference between what you sold the item for and what you originally paid. Holding period determines whether it’s taxed as long-term or short-term capital gain.

Business Reseller

If you buy inventory specifically to resell, your earnings are ordinary business income, not capital gains. Items held for sale to customers are excluded from the definition of a capital asset under federal law.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1221 – Capital Asset Defined Report gross revenue and business expenses on Schedule C, and if the net profit exceeds $400, complete Schedule SE for self-employment tax.9Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) Deductible costs typically include what you paid for inventory, shipping supplies and postage the platform didn’t cover, mileage to source or ship items, and a portion of home expenses if you have a dedicated space for inventory or photography.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Vinted currently does not charge sellers a commission, so there is no platform seller fee to deduct.

Keep Records That Prove What You Paid

The single most valuable thing a Vinted seller can do is document what each item originally cost. Without that, you can’t prove you sold at a loss, and the IRS could treat the entire sale price as taxable.

For casual sellers, save original purchase receipts, credit card statements, or screenshots of the original retail listing. Nothing elaborate, but something. For business resellers, keep a running log of every item with its date of purchase, source, price paid, and eventual selling price. Photograph thrift store receipts before the thermal paper fades. The IRS recommends holding business records for at least three years after filing the return they support.11Internal Revenue Service. Taking Care of Business: Recordkeeping for Small Businesses

If a 1099-K does arrive, remember that the gross figure on it includes shipping and any sales tax processed through the platform, so it will almost always overstate your actual taxable income. Your records are what let you calculate the correct number and report that instead.

Sales Tax Is Handled by Vinted

Every state with a sales tax has marketplace facilitator laws that require platforms like Vinted to collect and remit the tax for their sellers. Vinted handles this automatically on in-app transactions. You don’t need to register for a sales tax permit or file sales tax returns for what you sell through the platform. If you also sell through your own website or another channel that doesn’t collect for you, those sales may carry separate obligations depending on where the buyer is.
