How long it takes to repay student loans depends on the loan type and the plan you choose: federal loans run from 10 years on the standard plan up to 30 years for a large consolidation balance, and private loans typically run 5 to 25 years based on your lender’s contract. Forgiveness programs can cut the clock short, and consolidation can reset or extend it.
The Standard 10-Year Federal Plan
Unless you choose otherwise, you’re placed on the Standard Repayment Plan. It covers Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, and all PLUS Loans, with 120 fixed monthly payments over 10 years.1Federal Student Aid. Graduated Plan Because the payment stays the same every month, this plan produces the least total interest of any federal option.
The 10-year clock starts after your grace period ends. For most Direct Loans, that’s six months after you leave school or drop below half-time enrollment.2Federal Student Aid. How Long Is My Grace Period Parent PLUS Loans and Direct Consolidation Loans don’t come with an automatic grace period. For Parent PLUS borrowers, repayment begins as soon as the loan is fully disbursed to the school.3Aidvantage. In Your Grace Period
Income-Driven Plans: 20 to 25 Years
Income-driven repayment (IDR) ties your monthly payment to income and family size. Any balance left at the end of the term is forgiven. The length depends on the loans you’re repaying:4eCFR. 34 CFR 685.209 Income-Driven Repayment Plans
- 20 years (240 payments) for borrowers repaying only undergraduate loans under PAYE, or new borrowers under IBR.
- 25 years (300 payments) for borrowers with any graduate or professional school loans, non-new borrowers under IBR, and borrowers on ICR.
You have to recertify income and family size every year. Miss the recertification and your servicer can drop you from the plan and recalculate payments on a 10-year schedule using your current balance, which usually means a sharp jump.4eCFR. 34 CFR 685.209 Income-Driven Repayment Plans
One boundary: the SAVE plan is no longer available. Federal courts ruled it unlawful in 2025, interest on SAVE-enrolled loans resumed accruing on August 1, 2025, and the Department of Education has directed affected borrowers to switch plans, recommending IBR until a new Repayment Assistance Plan becomes available, expected by July 1, 2026.5U.S. Department of Education. Public Service Loan Forgiveness in 10 Years
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is the shortest federal path to a zero balance. You need 120 qualifying monthly payments on Direct Loans while working full-time for an eligible employer.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087e – Terms and Conditions of Loans Eligible employers include federal, state, and local government agencies, the military, and 501(c)(3) nonprofits.7Federal Student Aid. Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Payments only count if you’re on an IDR plan or the standard 10-year plan. Extended and graduated plans don’t qualify.7Federal Student Aid. Public Service Loan Forgiveness The 120 payments don’t need to be consecutive, so job gaps or deferment just stretch the calendar; they don’t reset the count. PSLF forgiveness is also not subject to federal income tax, which makes the 10-year timeline more valuable than it looks on paper.
Extended and Graduated Plans
If you have more than $30,000 in federal loans, the Extended Repayment Plan stretches payments to 25 years with either fixed or graduated amounts.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is an Extended Repayment Plan for Federal Student Loans Monthly payments drop, total interest climbs. The Extended plan also doesn’t qualify for PSLF or other forgiveness programs, so it’s a poor fit if forgiveness is part of your plan.
The Graduated Repayment Plan keeps the 10-year window for non-consolidated loans but starts payments low and raises them every two years. No payment can be less than the interest that accrues between payments, and no single payment can exceed three times any other payment.1Federal Student Aid. Graduated Plan On a Direct Consolidation Loan, the graduated timeline runs between 10 and 30 years depending on your balance.
How Consolidation Rewrites Your Timeline
A Direct Consolidation Loan combines multiple federal loans into one. It replaces your original terms with a new timeline tied to your total balance. Under the standard or graduated plan for consolidation loans, the maximum period scales with the amount owed:9GovInfo. 34 CFR 685.208
- Under $7,500: 10 years
- $7,500 to $9,999: 12 years
- $10,000 to $19,999: 15 years
- $20,000 to $39,999: 20 years
- $40,000 to $59,999: 25 years
- $60,000 or more: 30 years
Consolidation also affects progress toward PSLF. If you consolidate on or after September 1, 2024, qualifying payments already made on Direct Loans carry over to the new loan through a weighted average.10Federal Student Aid. Do the Qualifying Payments I Made Before Consolidating My Direct Loans Still Count Toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness For anyone who consolidated earlier, prior payment counts didn’t carry over, and the PSLF clock reset to zero.
Private Student Loan Terms
Private loans follow the contract you sign, not federal rules. Many lenders offer a standard 10-year term, but terms can run anywhere from 5 to 25 years depending on the lender, your credit, and the interest rate type you choose.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Does It Take to Pay Off a Student Loan
Shorter terms mean higher monthly payments but less total interest. Longer terms do the opposite. Private lenders aren’t required to offer income-driven options, deferment, or forgiveness; any flexibility shows up in the promissory note, which is worth reading carefully, especially if a co-signer is on the loan, since a default affects both of you. The only way to change a private loan’s term after signing is to refinance, which replaces the loan with a new agreement.
Paying Off Federal Loans Early
You can prepay any federal student loan, in part or in full, at any time without a penalty.12Federal Student Aid. Repaying Your Loans Extra amounts go first to outstanding interest, then to principal. Even modest extra payments reduce total interest and shorten the actual payoff date well below the plan’s stated length. If getting out of debt fast is the goal, the standard 10-year plan combined with extra payments is usually the cheapest route.
The Tax Bill at the End of IDR
Starting January 1, 2026, balances forgiven through IDR plans are treated as taxable income on your federal return. The American Rescue Plan Act had excluded forgiven student loan debt from gross income from 2021 through 2025, and that provision has expired.13Federal Student Aid. How Will a Student Loan Payment Count Adjustment Affect My Taxes If you reach the end of a 20- or 25-year IDR term in 2026 or later, the IRS will treat the canceled amount as income for that tax year. PSLF forgiveness remains free of federal income tax. Some states tax forgiven debt separately, so check your state’s rules before counting on a clean finish.
