Most applicants get their biometrics appointment notice four to eight weeks after USCIS accepts the application and mails the Form I-797C receipt notice. That window is an average, not a promise. How long it takes to get a biometrics appointment after the receipt notice depends on the form you filed, the workload at your local Application Support Center, and whatever backlogs USCIS is working through at the moment.
What Pushes the Wait Shorter or Longer
A few things move the four-to-eight-week estimate in either direction.
- USCIS workload. When filings surge nationally, biometrics scheduling slows with everything else. National backlogs feed local ones.
- Your local ASC. Appointments are scheduled at the Application Support Center closest to your mailing address. Centers serving large metropolitan areas run heavier queues than smaller-city offices, so geography alone can add or subtract weeks.

- Disruptions. Natural disasters, public health emergencies, and facility closures can force USCIS to reschedule appointments in bulk. When ASCs close temporarily, backlogs compound.

How to Check Whether Your Notice Has Been Mailed
Once you have the I-797C receipt notice, you can track the case using the 13-character receipt number printed on it.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online Enter that number into the USCIS online case status tool to see whether the biometrics notice has been mailed, whether the case has moved to a new stage, or whether USCIS needs something from you.
A personalized USCIS online account shows the last five actions on your case. If eight weeks have passed with no notice, or you suspect the notice was lost in the mail, call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 to ask about the case and potentially get a new appointment scheduled. When No Appointment Comes at All
Not everyone gets scheduled. If USCIS already has your fingerprints and photo from a prior visit to an ASC, and no more than 36 months have passed since that photo was taken, the agency can reuse the photo and skip the appointment. Photo reuse never applies to these form types, which always require a new appointment:
- Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
- Form I-485, Application to Adjust Status
- Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card

For other benefit types, USCIS has discretion to reuse the photo or require a new one. If reuse applies, no ASC notice will arrive and the case moves forward without that step.
Going In Before Your Scheduled Date
USCIS policy allows you to appear at the ASC before your scheduled date.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Biometrics Collection Whether the ASC actually takes you depends on how busy it is that day. Some centers accommodate walk-ins readily; others turn people away at capacity. Early on a weekday morning tends to improve the odds, but there is no guarantee.
If You Cannot Make the Scheduled Date
Request a reschedule through your USCIS online account at my.uscis.gov before the appointment date and time. Do not mail a rescheduling request.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment You need to show “good cause.” USCIS lists these examples:
- Illness, a medical appointment, or hospitalization
- Previously planned travel that conflicts with the date
- A wedding, funeral, or graduation
- Inability to get to the ASC location
- Inability to get time off from work or from caregiving responsibilities

Skipping the appointment without requesting a reschedule or filing a change of address has one outcome: USCIS treats the application as abandoned and denies it.
