A passing score on the Securities Industry Essentials exam is good for four years from the date you take it. Within that window, you need to associate with a FINRA member firm and pass a top-off qualification exam, such as the Series 7 or Series 6, to complete your registration. If the four years run out before you finish those steps, the SIE credit expires and you have to take the exam again.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity
How the Four-Year Clock Works
The clock starts on your exam date. For those four years, FINRA treats your result as current and you can apply it toward registration.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity You do not need to be employed in the securities industry to hold the credit. Anyone 18 or older can sit for the SIE independently, and the pass holds regardless of what you do for work.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam
The rule applies uniformly. Time in another career, time in school, time between jobs — none of it pauses the clock. On the fourth anniversary of your exam date, the credit expires. There is no grace period.
What You Need to Do Before It Expires
Passing the SIE on its own does not let you conduct securities business or give investment advice. To do either, you must become associated with a FINRA member firm and pass a top-off qualification exam that matches the work you’ll do.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam
Association happens when a firm files a Form U4 on your behalf, linking your exam results to the firm’s regulatory profile in FINRA’s Central Registration Depository. You have to be associated with a firm before you can even sit for a top-off exam, because qualification exams require firm sponsorship. The SIE does not.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam
Common top-off exams include the Series 7, for general securities representatives working with the broadest range of products, and the Series 6, focused on mutual funds, variable annuities, and similar products.3FINRA. Qualification Exams
One timing detail matters more than any other: both your SIE and your top-off exam must be valid at the moment your registration is approved. Representative-level and principal-level qualification exams are valid for only two years from passing if you haven’t yet obtained an approved registration, which is a shorter window than the SIE’s four. If your SIE has expired by the time your top-off is approved, the registration cannot be finalized. Most firms schedule the top-off shortly after hiring so the two credits line up.1FINRA. If the Four Years Run Out
If the window closes before you complete registration, retaking the SIE is the path forward. The exam fee is $100 as of 2026.4FINRA. Fee Adjustment Schedule A new four-year clock starts the day you pass again. The exam has 75 questions and requires a score of 70 to pass.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam
Fail a retake and you must wait 30 days before trying again. After three consecutive failures, the wait becomes 180 days.5FINRA. Prepare for Your Test Center Appointment
Exam Waivers for Experienced Candidates
There is no automatic extension for an expired SIE, but FINRA will grant exam waivers in limited circumstances. A firm can request a waiver on your behalf based on factors like prior securities industry experience, work in a related investment field such as portfolio management or investment advisory services, or employment at a securities regulatory agency. FINRA reviews each request individually, weighing the length and quality of your experience, your registration history, and your disciplinary record.6FINRA.org. Qualification Exam Waivers and Exemptions
An SIE waiver can only be requested alongside a representative-level exam waiver; it cannot be requested on its own. If granted, the waiver is typically conditional: you must pass the applicable qualification exam within 90 days and within two attempts. Fail both attempts and the waiver is revoked, leaving you to pass both the SIE and the qualification exam on your own.6FINRA.org. Qualification Exam Waivers and Exemptions
A Different Clock If You Leave a Firm
If you complete registration and later leave your firm, the SIE’s expiration date shifts. When your firm files a Form U5 to end your registration, your SIE remains valid for four years from the termination date, not from the date you originally passed. You get a fresh four-year window to rejoin the industry without retaking the SIE.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity
Your representative-level qualification is on a shorter leash. The Series 7 and similar top-off credits lapse two years after the termination date on your Form U5.7FINRA. Formerly Registered Reps So after a three-year gap, you would still have a valid SIE but would need to retake your top-off, unless you had enrolled in FINRA’s Maintaining Qualifications Program.
One boundary worth knowing: the Maintaining Qualifications Program, which lets formerly registered individuals preserve qualifications for up to five years through annual continuing education and a $100 annual fee, is not available for a standalone SIE. It is designed for representative- and principal-level registrations. If you only ever passed the SIE and never completed a top-off exam, the program is not an option, and the four-year rule is what governs you.8FINRA.org. The Maintaining Qualifications Program (MQP)
