How the Two Weeks Break Down
JOTC follows a crawl-walk-run progression. Week One builds individual skills: dismounted movement through thick vegetation, jungle land navigation, water crossings, combat tracking, tropical medical considerations, squad-level contact drills, and survival training.1United States Army. Week Two shifts to execution. Students put everything from the first week together in a multi-day culminating exercise called the CULEX, operating as squads through realistic jungle scenarios. The course finishes with the “Green Mile,” a physical endurance course that functions as the final gut check before recovery and graduation.1United States Army. The daily rhythm is dense. Day Two introduces jungle land navigation, Day Three is the graded navigation assessment, Day Six adds contact drills and tropical medical instruction, and Day Seven is dedicated entirely to survival: shelter, fire craft, water procurement, and identifying edible and dangerous species.325th Infantry Division. Pass-or-Fail Gates That Can Cut Your Course Short
Two weeks assumes you make it to graduation. JOTC has real gate-keeping requirements, and students who arrive unprepared get sent home.
Before your unit can enroll you, you need a passing ACFT score (or your service’s equivalent), a periodic health assessment within the last 12 months, and you must meet Army height and weight standards. Soldiers 40 or older bring a cardiovascular screening EKG. You also need at least one year of active-duty service remaining after the course ends.5United States Army. Once you arrive, the assessments start immediately. On Day One you must demonstrate proficiency in four critical knots and two non-critical knots. During the first week you face three pass-or-fail gates that will end your course if you don’t clear them:
- Combat Water Survival Assessment, a swimming evaluation confirming you can handle water crossings safely.
- Jungle 5k Run, which you must finish within 40 minutes.
- Land Navigation Assessment, where you prove you can navigate jungle terrain with a map and compass under limited-visibility conditions.

The Longer Panama Variant
The Hawaii course is not the only JOTC. The Army also runs JOTC-Panama, an 18-day combined training program conducted alongside Panamanian security forces at Base Aeronaval Cristóbal Colón. That version adds multinational interoperability to the core jungle warfare curriculum, which is part of why it runs longer than the Hawaii course.6The United States Army. Where It Runs and Who Can Attend
The primary JOTC runs year-round at the Lightning Academy near Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The surrounding terrain provides dense tropical vegetation, steep ravines, and river crossings that closely replicate operational jungle environments.7United States Army. Lightning Academy
The course is more open than most people assume. The 25th Infantry Division runs it for all services, ranks, and occupational specialties. Infantry and special operations soldiers attend in large numbers, but the Lightning Academy actively recruits students from combat support roles and sister services, including the Marines and Navy.4Fort Benning.
