An anti-money laundering certificate is generally good for one to three years, depending on which credential you hold. The Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and most other specialist-level designations from ACAMS run on a three-year cycle, associate-level ACAMS credentials renew every year, the American Bankers Association’s Certified AML and Fraud Professional (CAFP) uses a three-year continuing-education cycle with an annual maintenance fee, and the FIBA AML Certified Associate (AMLCA) runs on a two-year cycle. In every case, keeping the credential active requires continuing education credits and a fee, not just the passage of time.
Validity Period by Credential
There is no single standard across providers. Each issuing organization sets its own cycle based on the depth of the credential.
ACAMS Credentials
ACAMS ties the renewal period to the certification level. Associate-level credentials — the Certified Know Your Customer Analyst (CKYCA), Certified Transaction Monitoring Analyst (CTMA), and Certified AML FinTech Compliance Associate (CAFCA) — are good for one year and must be renewed annually. Specialist-level credentials, including the CAMS, Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS), Certified Cryptoasset Anti-Financial Crime Specialist (CCAS), and Certified AML FinTech Compliance Specialist (CAFS), are good for three years. Advanced specialist designations, including the Advanced CAMS-Audit, CAMS-FCI, and CAMS-RM, also carry a three-year validity.1ACAMS. Maintain Your ACAMS Certification
ABA Certified AML and Fraud Professional
The CAFP from the American Bankers Association runs on a three-year continuing-education cycle. Holders must earn 45 CE credits over each three-year period, pay an annual maintenance fee, and continue to follow the ABA’s professional code of ethics to remain in good standing.2American Bankers Association. FIBA AML Certified Associate
The Florida International Bankers Association’s AMLCA is good for two years at a time. Keeping it active means completing 20 hours of continuing education every two years and paying a biannual recertification fee.3FIU Business. Program Guidelines FIBA AMLCA Certification Online
What You Have to Do During the Cycle
Validity depends on continuing education credits earned during the active period, not just the renewal payment. Specific requirements:
- ACAMS associate-level (CKYCA, CTMA, CAFCA): two recertification credits per year.4ACAMS. CKYCA Certification
- ACAMS specialist-level (CAMS, CGSS, CCAS, CAFS): 60 total credits over three years, with at least 12 from ACAMS-provided training or events.1ACAMS. Maintain Your ACAMS Certification
- ACAMS advanced specialist (CAMS-Audit, CAMS-FCI, CAMS-RM): 45 total credits over three years, with at least 15 from ACAMS.1ACAMS. Maintain Your ACAMS Certification
- ABA CAFP: 45 CE credits over three years, with no single training program counted more than once in a cycle.2American Bankers Association. Maintain the CAFP
- FIBA AMLCA: 20 hours of continuing education over two years.3FIU Business. Program Guidelines FIBA AMLCA Certification Online
Credits must have been earned after your certification date or your last recertification date to count. If you hold more than one ACAMS certification, the same eligible credits can apply to each.1ACAMS. Renewal Deadlines and the Late Window
For ACAMS specialist and advanced specialist credentials, three deadlines govern the end of your cycle. Submitting by October 1 of your expiration year gets you the early rate of $200. The standard deadline is December 15 at $250. A late submission is accepted through March 31 of the year after expiration at $300. Associate-level ACAMS credentials renew automatically at no additional fee as long as your membership is active and the credit requirement is met.6ACAMS. For the ABA CAFP, the annual fee notice goes out by email in October, and payment is due no later than January 31 of the following year. The maintenance fee is $290 per year.7American Bankers Association. Maintaining Your ABA Certification
FIBA sets a June 30 deadline for its two-year recertification. The fee is $150, with a $100 late fee if you miss the date.3FIU Business. Program Guidelines FIBA AMLCA Certification Online
ACAMS may grant an extension in exceptional circumstances such as extended medical leave or family emergencies. The request must come in during your recertification year and should include supporting documentation.1ACAMS. Maintain Your ACAMS Certification
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
If you do not submit an ACAMS specialist or advanced specialist recertification by the March 31 late deadline, the designation expires.1ACAMS. Maintain Your ACAMS Certification Once a certification has expired before the current year, you may have to retake the full certification exam. ACAMS tells people in that position to contact its Help Center to confirm whether they are still eligible to recertify or must sit for the test again.6ACAMS. A lapse also carries workplace consequences. Financial-services employers track certification status as part of their compliance programs, and if your credential expires, your employer may need to move you out of a role that requires it.
Employer-Mandated Training Is a Separate Obligation
A professional AML certification is not the same thing as the training your employer must provide. Federal law requires every financial institution to maintain an ongoing employee training program as part of its anti-money-laundering compliance program,8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 US Code 5318 – Compliance, Exemptions, and Summons Authority and the Bank Secrecy Act authorizes Treasury to impose that obligation.9Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The Bank Secrecy Act Those requirements run on their own schedule, which each institution sets based on its risk profile, and the frequency is independent of your personal certification cycle.10FFIEC BSA/AML InfoBase. BSA/AML Training Completing your employer’s annual training does not keep your CAMS, CAFP, or AMLCA active; you still have to earn CE credits and submit for recertification on the credential’s own clock.
