A ham radio license issued by the FCC is good for ten years, and that ten-year term applies whether you hold a Technician, General, or Amateur Extra class grant.1eCFR. 47 CFR 97.25 – License Term The clock starts on the date the FCC grants or renews the license, and your license document shows the exact issue and expiration dates. Renewal doesn’t involve any exam, and if you miss the deadline, a two-year grace period gives you time to fix it before the license is gone for good.
How to Renew Before Your License Expires
You can file a renewal application up to 90 days before your license expires.2Federal Communications Commission. Common Amateur Filing Task – Renewing a License Renewals go through the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS). Log in with your FCC Registration Number and password, confirm your information, and submit. No test, no interview.
The FCC charges a $35 application fee for each renewal.3Federal Communications Commission. Personal Service and Amateur Application Fees Payment must be completed within 10 days of the application receipt date.2Federal Communications Commission. Common Amateur Filing Task – Renewing a License Check the email address in your ULS profile before you file. The FCC stopped printing paper licenses in late 2020, so your renewed authorization and payment instructions arrive by email or electronic download only. An outdated address means you won’t get either one.
The renewal form also asks a felony disclosure question. You have to report any felony conviction in any court, even one that was later expunged or sealed. A “yes” answer doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but you’ll need to submit an explanation to the FCC within 14 days.
Filing early has a concrete payoff. If the FCC receives your renewal before the expiration date, your operating authority continues without interruption while the application is processed.4eCFR. 47 CFR 97.21 – Application for License Grant Waiting until the last day risks a gap.
The Two-Year Grace Period After Expiration
If your license expires before you renew, the FCC gives you two years to file a renewal without retaking any exams.4eCFR. 47 CFR 97.21 – Application for License Grant The form and the $35 fee are the same as an on-time renewal.3Federal Communications Commission. Personal Service and Amateur Application Fees
The important catch: you cannot legally transmit during the grace period. Your operating privileges end the moment the license expires and don’t come back until the FCC actually processes and grants the renewal.2Federal Communications Commission. Common Amateur Filing Task – Renewing a License Filing the application alone doesn’t restore anything. The FCC must receive your renewal before the two-year window closes, or the license is canceled for good.
What If the Grace Period Also Passes
Once the two-year grace period runs out, the FCC cancels the license and the call sign eventually becomes available for reassignment.5Federal Communications Commission. Vanity FAQ To get back on the air, you have to start the licensing process over at a volunteer examiner session by passing the current 35-question Technician exam (Element 2).6eCFR. 47 CFR 97.505 – Element Credit
The FCC does give partial exam credit based on the class you held before expiration:
- Expired Amateur Extra holders get credit for Elements 3 and 4. Passing Element 2 restores you to Amateur Extra.
- Expired Advanced or General holders get credit for Element 3. Passing Element 2 restores you to your previous class.
- Expired Technician holders get no element credit. Passing Element 2 produces a new Technician license.
For a former Extra, that means one exam instead of three.6eCFR. 47 CFR 97.505 – Element Credit Session fees run in the $5 to $15 range, and the FCC’s $35 application fee applies to the new license grant.3Federal Communications Commission. Personal Service and Amateur Application Fees The FCC will assign a new call sign with the new license.
Getting Your Old Call Sign Back
If you want the call sign you used to hold, the FCC’s vanity call sign system lets former holders request it.5Federal Communications Commission. Vanity FAQ Once your canceled license shows as “Canceled” or “Expired” in the FCC database, you can file a vanity application through ULS for your old call sign after your new license is granted. The vanity application carries the same $35 fee.3Federal Communications Commission. Personal Service and Amateur Application Fees
As the former holder, you have priority. For anyone else, a canceled call sign doesn’t become available for two years after cancellation, a waiting period the FCC adopted to prevent identification confusion and discourage call sign trafficking.5Federal Communications Commission. Vanity FAQ
