After the IRS accepts an e-filed return, most refunds arrive within 21 calendar days, and direct deposit typically adds one to two business days once the payment is sent.1Internal Revenue Service. Refunds That’s the answer for the majority of filers who e-file, claim no credits that trigger a hold, and don’t get flagged for review. Paper returns are a different story, running six weeks or more from the date the IRS receives them.
The 21-day clock counts calendar days, not business days, so weekends and federal holidays are included. It starts when the IRS accepts your return, not when you hit submit in your tax software. Acceptance itself is a light check: the return has the right format, your Social Security number parses correctly, and required fields are populated. The substantive review of your income, deductions, and credits happens after that.2Internal Revenue Service. Modernized e-File (MeF) Overview
How the Refund Reaches You
Direct deposit is now the default, and for most people it’s the only option. Under Executive Order 14247, the IRS generally stopped issuing paper refund checks to individual taxpayers after September 30, 2025. A small number of paper checks still go out where no electronic alternative works, but most filers now receive their refund by direct deposit or prepaid debit card.3Internal Revenue Service. Questions and Answers About Executive Order 14247: Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account
Once the IRS releases the payment through the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, your bank usually credits the money within one to two business days. The “Refund Sent” date shown by the IRS is the date the payment leaves the government, not the date it lands in your account.
Tracking Your Refund Day by Day
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go app show your status. For e-filed returns, data appears within 24 hours of acceptance. For paper returns, you’ll need to wait about four weeks before anything shows up.1Internal Revenue Service. Refunds You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact refund amount from your return.
The tracker moves through three stages:
- Return Received. The IRS has your return and is processing it.
- Refund Approved. The review is complete and the amount is confirmed.
- Refund Sent. The payment has been transmitted to your bank or mailed.4Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool
Reasons Your Refund May Take Longer
You Claimed the EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit
If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS is required by the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act to hold your entire refund, not just the credit portion, until mid-February.5Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit For the 2026 filing season, the IRS expects most affected refunds to reach bank accounts or debit cards by March 2, 2026, for filers who e-filed with direct deposit and had a clean return. Projected deposit dates should appear in Where’s My Refund for most early EITC and ACTC filers by February 21, 2026.6Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season Filing earlier doesn’t lift the hold; it just puts you at the front of the queue when it lifts.
Identity Verification
If the IRS thinks someone else may have filed using your information, it sends a letter, usually Letter 5071C or Letter 4883C, asking you to verify your identity online or by phone. Your refund is frozen until you complete that step. Once you verify successfully, processing can take up to nine additional weeks.7Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 4883C If you don’t respond, the return sits and no refund is issued.
Math Errors or Missing Information
IRS systems automatically check for calculation mistakes and missing data. A correction that changes what you owe triggers a CP11 notice.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP11 Notice A correction that changes your refund amount triggers a CP12 notice instead.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP12 Notice If the IRS needs documents from you, processing pauses until you reply.
A Debt Reduces or Eliminates the Refund
The Bureau of the Fiscal Service can intercept some or all of your refund through the Treasury Offset Program to pay past-due debts such as federal student loans, child support, or state income taxes.10eCFR. 31 CFR 285.2 – Offset of Tax Refund Payments to Collect Past-Due, Legally Enforceable Nontax Debt You’ll get a notice showing the original amount, what was taken, and which agency received it. Disputes go to that agency, not the IRS. If you didn’t receive a notice, call the TOP call center at 800-304-3107.11Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns Are on a Different Timeline
The 21-day figure applies to original returns. An amended return filed on Form 1040-X generally takes 8 to 12 weeks, and can run up to 16 weeks.13Internal Revenue Service. If the IRS Takes Too Long, It Owes You Interest
The IRS has 45 days from the filing deadline, or from your actual filing date if you filed late, to send your refund without owing interest. Beyond that, interest accrues automatically on the refund amount.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments For the first quarter of 2026, the rate on individual overpayments is 7 percent, compounded daily, and it can change each quarter.16Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates You don’t have to request it. Note that the interest is taxable income, and you’ll get a Form 1099-INT if the amount is $10 or more.
If Your Refund Never Shows Up
If the tracker says the refund was sent but nothing arrives, you can ask the IRS to trace the payment. Wait at least five days past the sent date for a direct deposit, or at least six weeks after mailing for a paper check.17Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries Start a trace through Where’s My Refund, by calling the refund hotline at 800-829-1954, or by calling 800-829-1040. Jointly filed returns can’t use the automated trace; you’ll need to speak with a representative or mail Form 3911. If a paper check was cashed by someone else, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service investigates, which can take up to six more weeks.
