How Long for ACH to Clear: Cut-Off Times, Same Day, and FedNow

An ACH payment typically clears in one to two banking days, and how long ACH takes to clear depends on the direction of the money. ACH debits, like a bill pulled from your checking account, must settle the same day or the next banking day. ACH credits, like a payroll deposit pushed into your account, can settle same day, next day, or up to two banking days out. Same Day ACH shortens the wait to a matter of hours, and many banks release direct deposits early through separate features that sit on top of the network.

Credits Take Longer Than Debits

The single biggest factor in ACH timing is which way the money is moving.

An ACH credit pushes funds into an account. Payroll direct deposits, tax refunds, and vendor payments all move this way. The sender picks the settlement date within a two-banking-day window, and by Nacha rule a credit cannot be scheduled more than two banking days out. The significant majority of ACH payments settle in one business day or less.1Nacha. The Significant Majority of ACH Payments Settle in One Business Day—or Less

An ACH debit pulls funds out. Automatic mortgage payments, utility drafts, and subscription charges all work this way. Debits settle faster than credits: either the same day they are processed or the next banking day. Nacha rules do not allow a debit to be dated more than one banking day into the future.1Nacha. What Slows an ACH Payment Down

Your Bank’s Daily Cut-Off Time

Every bank sets its own deadline for accepting ACH files, often in the late afternoon. Miss it, and the bank treats your transfer as if you had submitted it the next business day. That one delay shifts the whole settlement window forward. Check your bank’s posted cut-off and submit well ahead of it if timing matters.

Weekends and Federal Holidays

ACH settlement runs only when the Federal Reserve’s National Settlement Service is open, which excludes weekends and federal holidays.2Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet A payment initiated Friday evening will not begin processing until Monday. If Monday is a holiday, processing waits until Tuesday. A routine one-day transfer can feel like four or five calendar days from the moment you hit send.

The Settlement Date the Sender Picked

For credits, the originator chooses when the payment settles inside the allowed window. Some employers and billers schedule two banking days out even when next-day settlement is available. You cannot change this from the receiving end. If your paycheck consistently arrives later than you would expect, your employer may simply be picking the longer option.

Same Day ACH Clears in Hours

Same Day ACH settles within hours instead of the next business day. The service runs three windows a day, and each payment can be up to $1 million.3Nacha. Same Day ACH The Eastern Time windows are approximately:

  • Submissions by 10:30 AM ET settle around 1:00 PM ET.
  • Submissions by 2:45 PM ET settle around 5:00 PM ET.
  • Submissions by 4:45 PM ET settle by end of day.

Not everything qualifies. International ACH transactions are excluded because they trigger additional compliance screening, though Nacha has proposed lifting that restriction by March 2027.4Nacha. Same Day ACH Moving Payments Faster Phase 1 Federal government payments are also ineligible and continue to settle on future dates regardless of when they are submitted. Banks generally pass along a flat fee for same-day service, from a few dollars up to $10 or more per payment.

Why Some Direct Deposits Land Early

Many banks and fintechs advertise paychecks arriving “up to two days early.” That is not a feature of the ACH network. It is a decision by your bank to release funds as soon as it receives the pre-notification file from your employer, using its own reserves to front the money before actual settlement.

Early direct deposit works best when your employer submits payroll one to two days ahead of payday, which is common at larger companies. If your employer only sends the payroll file on the actual pay date, early access will not help you.

When Your Bank Must Give You the Money

Nacha Operating Rules require your bank to make ACH credit funds available for withdrawal no later than 9:00 AM local time on the settlement date.5Nacha. Funds Availability Requirements for Non-Same Day Credit Entries A direct deposit scheduled to settle Friday must be usable by 9:00 AM Friday in your time zone. For payroll deposits landing on a Friday, Nacha notes that funds are available that morning in virtually all cases and are not held over the weekend.2Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet

That rule governs the relationship between the bank and you. Even if the back-end accounting between institutions has not fully concluded, your bank still owes you access by 9:00 AM. A bank that routinely makes you wait past that time may be out of compliance with Nacha’s rules.

Returns and Failed Payments Add Time

Not every ACH goes through. When a payment fails because the account number was wrong, the account was closed, or funds were insufficient, the receiving bank sends it back using a standardized return reason code. For administrative errors, the receiving bank generally must return the transaction within two banking days of settlement.

If a payment you sent comes back, the funds return to your account, but not instantly. The return itself is an ACH transaction that follows the same batch-processing timeline, so plan on one to two additional banking days before the money reappears.

Faster Options: Wire Transfers and FedNow

If one to two banking days is too slow, two alternatives can move money the same day or in seconds.

Domestic wire transfers usually complete within hours on the same business day. They process individually rather than in batches, which is what makes them fast. Fees are much higher than ACH, often $25 to $35 for a domestic wire. Wires suit large one-time payments like real estate closings, where speed and finality outweigh cost.

The Federal Reserve launched the FedNow Service on July 20, 2023, as a real-time payment system. FedNow processes and settles individual payments within seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including weekends and federal holidays.6Federal Reserve Board. Additional Questions and Answers Participating banks must make funds available immediately after settlement. As of early 2026, roughly 1,640 financial institutions have joined the network. FedNow does not replace ACH; it offers an instant alternative when even one business day is too long to wait.
