Western Union keeps a cash pickup transfer available for about 90 days from the day you send it. After that, the transfer is marked expired in the system, but the money is not lost: you can still call and ask for a refund or ask Western Union to renew the transfer. That option stays open until your state’s dormancy period runs out, usually one to five years, at which point the funds are turned over to the state as unclaimed property.1Western Union. Western Union Unclaimed Property: How to Recover Funds
Separately, federal law gives you 30 minutes to cancel most transfers at no cost, as long as the receiver has not already collected the money.2eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.34 – Procedures for Cancellation and Refund of Remittance Transfers
The 90-Day Pickup Window
When you send money for cash pickup at an agent location, the receiver has roughly 90 days from the transaction date to walk into any Western Union location with their ID and the tracking number and collect the funds. If nobody picks it up in that window, Western Union flags the transfer as expired.1Western Union. Western Union Unclaimed Property: How to Recover Funds
Expired is not the same as gone. After the 90 days, you have two choices: ask Western Union to renew the transfer so the receiver can try again, or request a refund. Both remain available until the money is eventually escheated to the state.1Western Union. Western Union Unclaimed Property: How to Recover Funds
Cancelling Within 30 Minutes
Federal remittance rules give you 30 minutes from payment to cancel a transfer, whether you call customer service, go back to an agent location, or use the website. The only limit is that the receiver cannot have already been paid. If you cancel in this window, the provider has to refund the full amount, including the transfer fee and any taxes, within three business days, with no additional charge.2eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.34 – Procedures for Cancellation and Refund of Remittance Transfers
Scheduled transfers work differently. If you set a transfer to send at least three business days in the future, you can cancel any time up to three business days before that send date.3eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.36 – Transfers Scheduled Before the Date of Transfer
Refunds After the 30-Minute Window
Missing the 30-minute cutoff does not end your options, but it changes the terms. If you call to stop the transfer voluntarily and the money has not been picked up, Western Union will return the principal, but the transfer fee is generally not refunded. The fee only comes back if Western Union failed to deliver the transfer within the timeframe promised for the service you chose.4Western Union. Terms and Conditions
Western Union’s terms also give you a specific right at the 45-day mark: if the money has not been paid or credited to the receiver within 45 days of the transaction, you are entitled to a refund of the principal on written request, calculated at the exchange rate in effect when the refund is processed.4Western Union. If the transfer simply goes uncollected because the receiver never shows up, Western Union provides a full refund.5Western Union. Fraud Resource Center
What You Need to Request a Refund
Start with the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN), the 10-digit tracking number assigned to every transfer. You will find it on your original receipt, in your confirmation email if you sent online, or in your transaction history if you have a Western Union account.6Western Union. What Is a MTCN?
You will also need a government-issued photo ID that matches the sender name on the transfer, plus the receiver’s name and either the transaction date or the amount sent. Those details let Western Union pull up the record and confirm you are the sender.
If You Lost the Receipt
Losing the receipt is not the end of the road. Online and app transfers keep the MTCN in your account history. If you paid cash at an agent location with no digital record, call customer service and give whatever you remember: your name, the receiver’s name, the rough date and amount, and the sending location. A search based on those details can take two to four weeks.
How and When You Get Paid Back
Refunds come back the same way you paid. Debit card payments return to the card; bank payments return to the account; cash payments are picked up in cash at an agent location with your ID and MTCN.7Western Union. How Will I Get My Refund and How Long Will It Take
Once the refund is processed, expect the money in five to seven business days. Western Union sends a notification when it has been credited or is ready for pickup.7Western Union. How Will I Get My Refund and How Long Will It Take
You can check where things stand at any point with Western Union’s online tracker, which asks for the MTCN, your phone number, and the sender and receiver names.8Western Union. Track a Transfer
When the State Takes Over
If nobody picks up the transfer and nobody requests a refund, Western Union does not keep the money indefinitely. Every state has unclaimed property laws that force financial companies to hand over dormant funds after a set waiting period. For money transfers, that period is typically one to five years, depending on the state where the sender lived when the transaction happened.1Western Union. Western Union Unclaimed Property: How to Recover Funds
The process is called escheatment. Western Union files a report with the state and transfers the balance to the state treasury. From that point on, Western Union no longer has your money and cannot refund it, and you claim it from the state instead.
Western Union does not deduct inactivity fees while the money sits unclaimed. Its wallet fee schedule lists the inactivity fee as $0.9Western Union. Western Union Wallet Fee Schedule and Terms and Conditions
Claiming Escheated Funds
Every state runs a searchable unclaimed property database where you can look up money held in your name. Filing a claim through the state’s official program is free, and you get the full balance back. States hold unclaimed property indefinitely, so there is no deadline. Do not pay anyone who offers to recover unclaimed money for a fee.
If Your Refund Is Denied
When Western Union denies a refund and you think you were entitled to one, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau takes complaints about money transfer services. File at the CFPB website with your dates, amounts, and copies of any communications. The CFPB forwards the complaint to Western Union, which generally has to respond within 15 days.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Submit a Complaint
If the transfer involved a scam, call Western Union’s fraud hotline at 800-448-1492 and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC warns that anyone who contacts you offering to recover your Western Union money for a fee is running a scam.11Federal Trade Commission. New Alert for Western Union Refunds
