How Long Does VA Claim Preparation for Decision Take?

A VA disability claim usually sits in the Preparation for Decision phase for about one to three weeks, though the VA does not publish an official timeline for this step alone. The full claim process averaged 76.6 days from start to finish as of February 2026, and this stage is just one slice of that.1Veterans Affairs. The VA Claim Process After You File Your Claim How long you personally wait depends on how many conditions you claimed, how clean the evidence is, and which regional office is handling your file.

What the VA Actually Calls This Step

If you check your status on VA.gov, you won’t see the words “Preparation for Decision.” The VA labels this stage Step 5: Rating, and describes it as “deciding your claim and determining your disability rating.”2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. What Your Claim Status Means The older “Preparation for Decision” phrase still circulates in veteran forums and service organization guidance, but it refers to the same step.

During Rating, a Rating Veterans Service Representative reviews everything the VA has collected on your case: medical records, Compensation and Pension exam results, service records, and any supporting statements. That reviewer drafts a proposed decision with your disability percentage and the reasoning behind it. A senior reviewer then checks the draft before the claim moves forward to the decision letter stage.

Why the One-to-Three-Week Estimate Is Only an Estimate

The commonly cited 7-to-14-day window comes from veteran advocacy sources, not the VA. It holds up reasonably well for a straightforward claim with a single condition and clean medical evidence. Several things can stretch it:

  • Multiple conditions. Each claimed disability is evaluated separately, and the reviewer also has to look at whether any of them are connected. A claim covering three or four conditions takes noticeably longer than a single-issue claim.
  • Complex or conflicting evidence. Contradictory exam findings, incomplete records, or conditions that are hard to place on the VA’s rating schedule all slow the reviewer down.
  • Regional office workload. Processing speed varies by office. Local staffing and backlogs make a real difference.
  • Deferred conditions. If the VA has enough evidence to rate some of your claimed conditions but not others, it can defer the undecided ones for more development while it moves the rest forward. From the tracker, this can look like the claim is stuck.

Most of the total 76.6-day average is spent earlier in the process, during evidence gathering and review. By the time your file reaches Rating, the slow work is largely behind you.

The Mistake That Sends Your Claim Backward

This is the single most useful thing to know while your claim is in Rating: if you submit new evidence at this stage, the VA sends the claim back to Step 3, Evidence Gathering.1Veterans Affairs. The VA Claim Process After You File Your Claim The same reset happens if you submit new evidence during Step 6, Preparing Decision Letter. The weeks you already spent in Rating do not carry over.

So hold off on submitting anything new unless it genuinely could change the outcome. A medical opinion or test result that directly contradicts something already in your file may be worth the reset. A duplicate copy of records the VA already has is not. Neither is a personal statement restating what you already said. If you’re unsure whether a document rises to that level, ask your accredited representative before you upload it.

Requesting Priority Processing While You Wait

Priority processing is the one lever still available to you once a claim reaches Rating. You can request it at any stage by filing VA Form 20-10207 if any of the following apply:3Veterans Affairs. Request Priority Processing for an Existing Claim

  • You are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
  • You are experiencing extreme financial hardship, such as job loss or a sudden drop in income.
  • You have ALS or another terminal illness.
  • You have a Very Seriously Injured/Ill or Seriously Injured/Ill designation from the Department of Defense.
  • You are 85 or older.
  • You are a former prisoner of war.
  • You received the Medal of Honor or Purple Heart.

Priority processing does not come with a guaranteed turnaround, but it moves your claim ahead of others in the queue. If someone is filing the request for you, they’ll need VA Form 21-22 for a VSO representative or VA Form 21-22a for an accredited attorney or claims agent.

How to Check Where Your Claim Actually Stands

The most reliable way to track your claim is through VA.gov. Sign in with a verified Login.gov or ID.me account and go to your claims and appeals list to see the current step and any outstanding requests from the VA.4Veterans Affairs. If you’d rather talk to someone, the VA benefits hotline is 800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern.4Veterans Affairs. Check Your VA Claim, Decision Review, or Appeal Status Your accredited representative or VSO can also check your status through the VA’s internal portal. They see the same information the call center does, so reaching out to them is often faster than waiting on hold.

What Happens After Rating

Once Rating is complete, the claim moves to Step 6, Preparing Decision Letter, where the VA drafts the official notification. Step 7 is a final quality review. At Step 8, the claim is decided and the VA mails your decision packet, which includes your disability rating, monthly compensation amount, and the effective date for your benefits.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. What Your Claim Status Means

The letter should arrive within 10 business days after the claim reaches Step 8, though the VA notes it may take longer.1Veterans Affairs. The VA Claim Process After You File Your Claim If you have an accredited VSO representative, they can often see the decision in VA systems before your letter arrives. They cannot change anything in your file, but they can tell you the outcome and help you plan the next step while you wait for the official packet.
