How Long Does the NEXUS Approval Process Take?

Most applicants can expect the NEXUS approval process to take anywhere from about one month to well over a year, and the length depends on two stages: the background check and the interview. The vetting itself normally finishes in about two weeks, but a manual review can stretch that single step to 12 to 24 months.¹ After conditional approval, how quickly you finish depends on interview availability at the enrollment center you choose, which ranges from a few days to several months.

Stage One: The Background Check

After you submit your application through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler Programs website and pay the $120 fee, both CBP and the Canada Border Services Agency run independent background checks.² They query law enforcement, criminal, immigration, and customs enforcement databases on both sides of the border. Each country shares only a pass or fail result with the other.

CBP says this vetting normally takes about two weeks.³ When the check clears, “conditional approval” appears in your TTP account and you can schedule an interview. That two-week figure is the benchmark, not a guarantee. Application volume moves the number around, and backlogs push routine cases further back in the queue.

If anything in your record prompts a closer look, CBP moves the application into manual review. That process currently takes 12 to 24 months, after which you’ll be either conditionally approved or denied.¹ There’s no way to expedite it, and CBP won’t tell you what triggered the review.

Stage Two: The Interview Wait

Once conditionally approved, you need an in-person interview with officers from both CBP and CBSA. This is where most applicants underestimate the total wait. The background check might finish in two weeks, but if the nearest enrollment center is booked solid, the interview could still be months out.

Interview timing depends entirely on which enrollment center you choose and current demand there. Some centers have openings within days; others are booked six months out.¹ CBP suggests checking enrollment center availability before you even apply so a long wait doesn’t catch you off guard.⁴

The interview itself is short. Officers from both countries review your application, verify your identity against your original documents, ask about your travel patterns, take your fingerprints, and photograph you for your card.⁵ Bring a valid passport, a permanent resident card if applicable, proof of your current address, and court disposition papers for any prior arrests or convictions.⁶ Most applicants get a decision on the spot. After approval, the card arrives in the mail, typically within a few weeks.

Ways to Cut the Interview Wait

Because a NEXUS interview traditionally requires officers from both countries in the same room, CBP and CBSA have introduced two alternatives that can shave weeks or months off the total timeline.⁷

The land split interview lets you do the Canadian portion at a Canadian enrollment center and then walk to a nearby U.S. enrollment center for the American portion. It’s currently offered at Lansdowne, Ontario (Thousand Islands), Fort Erie, Ontario (Peace Bridge), and Stanstead, Quebec (booked through Derby Line, Vermont).

The air two-step interview lets you finish the CBSA portion at a Canadian airport enrollment center and then complete the CBP portion through Enrollment on Arrival at a Canadian preclearance airport, or any airport where Global Entry Enrollment on Arrival is available. No separate CBP appointment is needed. If you’re already planning a flight through a Canadian preclearance airport, this can effectively fold the U.S. half into a trip you were already taking.

What Pushes Your Timeline Longer

Several factors extend the process beyond the routine two-week vetting window:

Incomplete or inaccurate information on the application. Missing fields force the agencies to follow up before your background check can even start.
Criminal history. Any past conviction, including a DUI, can trigger manual review or a denial. A charge that didn’t result in a conviction may still need documentation to clear.
Complex travel history, particularly to countries that raise additional screening flags.
Prior customs or immigration violations at any border, in any country.⁸
High application volume. When application numbers spike, processing across the board slows.

The single most effective way to avoid a self-inflicted delay is checking every field on the application before you submit. An incorrect address or a missing employment entry is a two-minute fix on your end that can cost weeks in the queue.

Renewal Timelines

NEXUS memberships last five years, and a renewal goes through the same vetting as a new application. CBP and CBSA recommend starting the renewal up to 364 days before your card expires.⁹ If the background check turns up anything new, or the agencies decide a fresh interview is needed, that adds time.

One useful protection: if you submit your renewal before your current membership expires, you can keep using your NEXUS benefits while the renewal is processed.³ If you let the membership lapse first, you lose the benefits during the gap and go back through the process as a new applicant. Setting a calendar reminder a year out from your expiration date is the simplest way to avoid that.
