What matters most for your reentry permit biometrics processing time is not the length of the appointment but the requirement that you stay in the United States until it happens: leaving too early can sink the whole application.

How Fast USCIS Schedules the Appointment

After USCIS accepts your filing, the agency mails Form I-797C, Notice of Action, with the date, time, and location of your appointment at a local Application Support Center.¹ Most applicants report receiving that notice within roughly two to eight weeks of the filing receipt. USCIS does not publish a guaranteed scheduling window specifically for biometrics, so the range is what applicants observe rather than what the agency promises.

Several things push that window around. Application Support Centers have daily capacity limits, so facilities in major metro areas tend to run longer backlogs than those in smaller cities. Staffing at the center covering your zip code matters. If USCIS is absorbing a surge of applications across multiple form types, I-131 biometrics can get pushed back behind other work.

When USCIS Reuses Existing Biometrics

If you have given biometrics to USCIS before, the agency may reuse your photograph instead of scheduling a new appointment, which shortens your timeline. As of December 2025, USCIS limits photo reuse to cases where no more than 36 months have passed since the earlier capture, and it keeps discretion to require a fresh appointment anyway. Reuse does not apply to Form N-400, Form I-90, or Form I-485, which always require new biometrics.

Why You Cannot Leave the US Before Biometrics

You must be physically in the United States both when you file Form I-131 and when you attend the appointment.⁴ Applicants between 14 and 79 must complete biometrics before departing. If you leave the country before USCIS captures your fingerprints, photograph, and signature, the application can be denied.

Departing after biometrics are collected is treated differently. Leaving the United States after your appointment but before USCIS reaches a final decision usually does not affect the application.⁴ The window that pins you down is between filing and the appointment. Plan travel around it.

What Happens at the Appointment

The process is short. A technician at the Application Support Center digitally scans all ten fingerprints, takes a digital photograph for the permit card, and captures your signature on a touch pad. Once you are called from the lobby, the whole thing runs under 20 minutes. Lobby waits vary by location.

Behind the scenes, the fingerprints are cross-referenced against federal security databases, the photograph becomes the image printed on the physical permit, and the signature is linked to your file. Children under 14 are not required to sign, though they may if capable.¹

Bring two things: the original Form I-797C appointment notice and a valid, unexpired photo ID. Acceptable identification includes your Permanent Resident Card, a passport, or a driver’s license.⁵ If you lack all three, USCIS may accept other identity documentation case by case. A copy of your filed I-131 can help staff resolve any discrepancy during intake.

Review the appointment notice before you go. Confirm that your name, date of birth, and A-number match your records. If something is wrong, call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 before the scheduled date. Under the USCIS fee structure in effect since 2024, biometrics costs for reentry permit applications are folded into the I-131 filing fee, so there is no separate biometrics charge.⁶

If You Need to Reschedule or Miss the Appointment

If you cannot make the scheduled date, request a reschedule through your USCIS online account before the appointment time. Do not mail the request. You have to show good cause.¹ A reschedule will push your overall timing back by however long it takes the local center to fit you in again.

A no-show is worse than a delay. USCIS treats it as abandonment and denies the application. You and any authorized representative will receive written notice, and the priority date from an application denied for abandonment cannot be transferred to a future filing.⁵

If you have already missed the appointment and your case is still pending, contact the USCIS Contact Center to ask the agency to excuse the absence. These late requests are evaluated based on how much time has passed, whether you had a sufficient reason, and whether denial would cause undue hardship. Late rescheduling cannot be handled online, by mail, or in person; it goes through the Contact Center.⁵

Requesting Expedited Biometrics

If you have a genuine emergency and cannot wait for the standard scheduling window, you can submit an expedite request. USCIS evaluates these case by case and expects documentation. For Form I-131, the agency looks at whether you have a pressing or critical need to travel, such as a family member’s funeral, a serious illness, urgent medical treatment, or a professional commitment that cannot be postponed.⁷

Vacation does not qualify. For planned events, USCIS also considers whether you filed on time. If you waited until the last minute and now need the document urgently, the agency is less sympathetic. Common supporting evidence includes a death certificate or obituary, a doctor’s letter describing a medical emergency, an employer letter on company letterhead explaining a professional obligation, or invitations and reservations for significant events like a wedding.⁷

After Biometrics: The Longer Wait

Once the Application Support Center captures your biometrics, the data flows into federal background and security checks. Track progress by entering your receipt number at the USCIS Case Status Online tool, and watch for a status update showing biometrics complete and the case moving toward adjudication.⁸

The stretch between finishing biometrics and receiving the physical permit is the longest part of the process. Final approval depends on the service center handling your file and the queue in front of you. Many applicants wait several months, and waits of a year or more are not unusual. That gap is the reason to file well before any planned departure, and to check the processing times tool periodically, since posted timelines shift with application volumes and policy changes.²
