How long payment processing takes depends on the method: card and ACH payments generally settle in one to three business days, domestic wires clear the same business day, checks take two to five business days, and instant networks like FedNow and RTP move money in seconds around the clock. The reason “approved” at checkout doesn’t mean the merchant has been paid is that multiple banks still need to verify, clear, and reconcile the transfer behind the scenes.
Processing Times by Payment Method
Credit and Debit Cards
Card transactions get authorized in seconds, which is why the terminal says “approved” almost instantly. The merchant doesn’t actually receive the money for one to three business days. During that gap the charge sits in a pending state while the card network routes data between your bank and the merchant’s bank. You’ll see it on your statement as pending; the funds aren’t spendable by the merchant yet.
ACH Transfers
Automated Clearing House transfers handle direct deposits, bill pay, and most bank-to-bank moves. Standard ACH settles in one to three business days and only processes on business days, because the system runs on batch schedules rather than real time. Same-Day ACH is available for transactions up to $1 million per payment, cutting the wait to hours for an added fee.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Resource Center
Wire Transfers
Domestic wires typically settle the same business day when initiated before the bank’s cut-off.2J.P. Morgan. Treasury How Wire Transfers Work and When To Use Them That speed is why they’re standard for real estate closings and large business payments. Fees typically run $15 to $50 for domestic sends. Miss the cut-off, often 5:00 PM ET, and the bank treats the wire as a next-business-day transaction.3Bank of America. Cutoff Times for Deposits, Transfers and Payments
Paper Checks
Checks are the slowest common method, typically two to five business days for full clearance. Federal law requires your bank to make the first $275 of a check deposit available by the next business day, and up to $6,725 generally available within two business days for local checks. Amounts above $6,725 can be held up to seven business days while the bank verifies the check.4Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance
Peer-to-Peer Apps
Zelle sends funds directly between bank accounts and typically delivers within minutes at no cost. Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App work differently: money lands instantly in the recipient’s app balance, but moving that balance to a bank account takes one to three business days unless you pay for an instant transfer. Instant cashout fees generally run around 1.75% of the transfer amount, capped at $25 per transaction for Venmo and PayPal. Cash App charges between 0.5% and 1.75%.
Instant Payment Networks
Two networks now settle transactions in seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays:
- FedNow, the Federal Reserve’s service, raised its per-transaction limit to $10 million in November 2025.5Federal Reserve. FedNow Service Frequently Asked Questions6Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedNow Service Will Raise Transaction Limit to $10 Million
- RTP, operated by The Clearing House, also processes 24/7/365 with a $10 million per-transaction limit.7The Clearing House. Cash Flow Needs from Consumers and Businesses Drive New RTP Network Volume and Value Records
Neither network is universally available. Your bank or credit union has to opt in, and adoption is still rolling out. Where they’re supported, the recipient’s account is credited in seconds and the transfer is final.
Why “Approved” Doesn’t Mean “Paid”
Every non-instant payment moves through three stages. Authorization happens in seconds and produces the approval message: your bank confirms funds are available and places a temporary hold, which is what you see as a pending charge. Clearing is the electronic exchange of transaction details between the banks involved. Settlement is when actual money changes hands and the transaction goes from pending to posted. That final stage is what takes one to three business days for most card transactions.
This is also why pending amounts can shift. Restaurants adjust for tips, gas stations update from a $1 pre-authorization to the full pump total, and hotels release the difference between the hold and your actual charges. Those adjustments happen during clearing and settlement, not at the register.
What Slows a Payment Down
Merchant Batching
Most businesses collect the day’s transactions into a single batch and submit it at closing time rather than sending each one individually. A purchase you make at 9:00 AM might not start its journey through the banks until 10:00 PM. Businesses that batch less often add even more delay before the clock starts on settlement.
Weekends and Holidays
Standard systems like ACH don’t run on weekends or federal holidays. The Federal Reserve publishes an annual schedule of days when FedACH processing pauses.8Federal Reserve Financial Services. Federal Reserve System Holiday Schedule A transfer initiated Friday evening won’t begin processing until Monday morning, effectively turning a one-day transfer into a three-day wait. Holiday weekends stretch it further.
Cut-Off Times
Banks set a daily deadline for processing. Anything you submit after it rolls to the next business day. Cut-offs vary by bank and transaction type, but many fall between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Federal rules say a bank’s deposit cut-off at a physical location can’t be earlier than 2:00 PM.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Can a Bank or Credit Union Hold Funds I Deposited?
International Payments Take Longer
Cross-border payments add time because more institutions handle the money. International wires typically take one to five business days, with the range driven by how many intermediary banks sit between sender and recipient. Each one runs its own verification and compliance checks before forwarding the funds. A transfer between major banks in well-connected countries might arrive overnight; a transfer to a smaller institution in a country with limited banking infrastructure can take the full five days or longer.
Currency conversion adds another step. The banks involved lock in an exchange rate and recalculate the transfer amount before the funds move, and the rate you actually get may differ slightly from what you saw when you initiated the transfer. Large transactions also trigger regulatory reporting: banks must file Currency Transaction Reports for cash transactions above $10,000 under the Bank Secrecy Act,10FinCEN. A Quick Reference Guide for Money Services Businesses and anti-money laundering screening runs on every international wire regardless of amount.
If a Payment Doesn’t Arrive on Time
Processing delays sometimes turn into failures: charges that never post, duplicates, or unauthorized transactions. Your rights depend on the payment type, and the deadlines are shorter than most people realize.
For credit card billing errors, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date the statement containing the error was sent to dispute it in writing. The issuer must acknowledge your dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles, not to exceed 90 days. During the investigation the issuer can’t try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors This covers wrong amounts, charges for undelivered goods, and unauthorized transactions, but not general quality complaints about something you did receive.
For debit card transactions, ACH payments, and ATM withdrawals, Regulation E applies. Your bank has 10 business days to investigate after you report an error. If it needs longer, it can take up to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account within the initial 10 days. For new accounts opened within the last 30 days, the initial window stretches to 20 business days.12eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E)
Report problems fast. Protections are strongest when you act within 60 days for credit cards and two business days for debit cards to limit your liability for unauthorized use. Waiting longer doesn’t erase your rights, but it can shrink them.
