How Long Does OCI Take? Timelines, Delays, and Tracking

How long OCI takes depends on what you’re filing. A new Overseas Citizenship of India application usually takes five to six weeks of consulate processing once it’s registered, and a re-issuance of an existing card runs closer to six to seven weeks.1Consulate General of India, Atlanta. Processing Time for OCI Applications Add VFS Global handling on the front end and return shipping on the back end, and a clean application typically lands in your hands six to eight weeks after you drop off the packet. There is no expedited or tatkal option, so once the file is in, the timeline is largely out of your hands.

The Standard Processing Windows

For applications submitted in the United States, the consulates publish two baseline figures. New OCI applications based on Indian origin take about five to six weeks. Re-issuance or update of an existing card takes about six to seven weeks. Both windows assume the Ministry of Home Affairs in India grants security clearance without complications.1Consulate General of India, Atlanta. Processing Time for OCI Applications

Those figures cover consulate processing and card printing in India. They don’t cover the time VFS Global spends receiving and forwarding your packet, and they don’t cover the return courier. Realistically, from the day your documents leave you to the day the card arrives, plan on six to eight weeks for a straightforward file. Applications that hit a snag can stretch to three or four months.

What Can Stretch the Timeline

Several situations add weeks before the standard clock even starts, or during it.

Renunciation Certificate for Former Indian Citizens

If you were born an Indian citizen and later naturalized elsewhere, you need a Renunciation or Surrender Certificate before the OCI application can be processed. The Indian government will not register an OCI application without it.

Renunciation is submitted separately through VFS Global, with a fee of $25 plus a $3 Indian Community Welfare Fund charge and VFS’s service fee.2Embassy of India, Washington DC. FAQs on Renunciation With VFS mailing time on each end, budget three to four weeks. Only after the certificate is in hand can the OCI application be submitted, so total time for a former Indian citizen is closer to nine to eleven weeks.

Spouse-Based Applications

A foreign-national spouse of an Indian citizen or existing OCI cardholder can register, but the file goes through additional scrutiny. There is a mandatory personal interview, conducted in person or by video conference, and a security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs.4Online OCI Services. OCI Frequently Asked Questions Both add weeks. Spouse-based applicants should not expect the five-to-six-week baseline.

Biometrics

Fingerprints and a facial capture are required for every applicant. You can give them at the application stage or wait and provide them at an Indian immigration checkpoint on your first entry using the OCI card.4Online OCI Services. Where the Time Actually Goes

Knowing which stage your file is in helps you read the wait accurately.

Online registration. You complete the form at ociservices.gov.in, upload documents, and print the submission. The portal issues a file number and reference ID you’ll use later for tracking.5Consulate General of India, Seattle. How to Apply for OCI Card Time here is whatever you take.

VFS Global submission. You mail or hand-deliver the printed application and supporting documents to the VFS Indian Consular Application Centre serving your state, and VFS forwards everything to the consulate with jurisdiction over your residence.6Embassy of India, Washington DC. Public Notice on Visa Outsourcing to VFS A few business days.

Consulate verification. Consular staff review the documents, and any discrepancy triggers a request for clarification or resubmission. A clean packet clears this stage quickly; a problem here is where most avoidable delay lives.

Ministry of Home Affairs clearance and printing. The file goes to India for security clearance, the card is printed there, and it’s shipped back to the consulate. This is the longest stretch, and status often sits unchanged for several weeks during it. That is normal.

Return delivery. The consulate or VFS notifies you for pickup, or couriers the card to your address if you paid for that option.

What Slows Applications Down

Beyond the categorical add-ons above, the common causes of delay are procedural.

  • Photo problems. The uploaded image must be square JPEG, no larger than 500 KB, between 200 by 200 and 1,500 by 1,500 pixels, on a plain light (non-white) background, with the face taking up at least 80 percent of the frame. Physical photos on the printed form must be at least 51 by 51 millimeters and match the digital version. White backgrounds, undersized prints, and blurry uploads all send the file back.7VFS Global. Instructions for Filling OCI Application
  • Old Indian passport details entered incorrectly. If you’ve held multiple Indian passports, wrong numbers or dates trigger manual review.
  • Missing renunciation certificate. Submitting the OCI file hoping to save time doesn’t work; the application won’t process.
  • Name mismatches across documents. Different spellings on a passport, marriage certificate, or birth records prompt a request for an affidavit of explanation.
  • High-volume periods. Consulates with large diaspora populations, or seasonal surges, process more slowly than the published estimate suggests.

If any of these apply to your file, plan past two months rather than at the low end of the range.

No Expedited Option, and What to Do if You Must Travel

India does not offer tatkal or emergency processing for OCI. If you have urgent travel while your application is pending, apply for a regular Indian visa instead. A pending OCI application and a valid Indian visa can coexist, so a visa is the practical answer when you can’t wait out the OCI clock.1Consulate General of India, Atlanta. Tracking Your Application

Once submitted, you can check progress at ociservices.gov.in using the file number and reference ID generated during registration, along with your passport details.8Government of India OCI Services. Status moves through stages like “documents received,” “under process,” and “granted.” The jump from “under process” to “granted” is the longest gap because it covers Ministry of Home Affairs clearance and printing in India. Silence for two or three weeks during that phase does not mean anything is wrong.
