How Long Does NVC Take to Schedule an Interview?

The National Visa Center aims to schedule your immigrant visa interview within a few months after your case becomes documentarily qualified, and it usually emails the appointment notice two to three months before the interview date. How long the NVC takes to schedule an interview in practice depends almost entirely on two things: whether a visa number is available in your category, and how backed up your specific embassy is. Some posts are scheduling cases that finished paperwork weeks ago. Others are years behind.

Check the IV Scheduling Status Tool First

The single most useful thing you can do is look up your embassy in the State Department’s Immigrant Visa Scheduling Status Tool. For each post, it shows the documentary-completion date the NVC is currently scheduling for, broken down by employment preference, family preference, and immediate relative.1U.S. Department of State. IV Scheduling Status Tool

The spread between posts is dramatic. As of March 2026, many embassies were scheduling interviews for cases that became documentarily complete that same month, meaning essentially no backlog. Dhaka was still scheduling employment-preference interviews for cases documentarily complete in December 2021 and family-preference cases from October 2021. Mumbai was working on cases from late 2025. Ciudad Juarez was scheduling employment-preference cases from August 2024.1U.S. Department of State. IV Scheduling Status Tool

Check the tool once a month. When the documentary-completion date it shows for your embassy reaches or passes the date your own case became documentarily qualified, your appointment email should be close.

What Has to Happen Before Scheduling Can Start

Two conditions must both be met before the NVC will schedule you.

Your Case Must Be Documentarily Qualified

After USCIS approves the petition, the NVC collects fees, reviews your DS-260, and reviews the Affidavit of Support and civil documents you upload through CEAC. Only when the NVC accepts everything does your case become “documentarily qualified” and enter the scheduling queue.2Department of State. NVC’s Role in Your Immigrant Visa Journey Anything missing or rejected resets your position, so the faster you respond to NVC requests, the sooner the clock actually starts.

The NVC also publishes how current it is on its own document review. In early March 2026 it was creating case files for petitions received about two weeks earlier and reviewing documents submitted about one week prior.3Travel.State.Gov. A Visa Number Must Be Available

Most immigrant visa categories have annual numerical limits, and the NVC cannot schedule your interview until your priority date is current on the Visa Bulletin, no matter how complete your file is.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Visa Availability and Priority Dates Depending on your category and country of birth, the wait for a current date can run from months to decades.

Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents) are exempt from these caps, so this bottleneck doesn’t apply to them. For everyone else it usually matters more than embassy scheduling capacity does.

Why Embassy Capacity Swings the Wait

Once your number is current and your file is complete, the interview slot depends on the specific consular post handling your case. Staffing levels, local operating conditions, and case volume vary widely between embassies, which is why the scheduling tool shows some posts caught up to the current month and others still working on cases from years ago.5Travel.State.Gov. How You’ll Be Notified

When the NVC schedules you, it emails the appointment date and time to you, your petitioner, and your attorney if you have one.6U.S. Department of State. Step 10: Prepare for the Interview Expect the notification about two to three months before the interview itself.1U.S. Department of State. If you need to reach the NVC, use the Public Inquiry Form. Response times were running about one week in March 2026.3Travel.State.Gov. NVC Timeframes

When the NVC Will Expedite

The NVC accepts expedite requests only in narrow circumstances. You need a life-or-death medical emergency, and a visa must already be available in your category. If both apply, email NVCExpedite@state.gov with a scanned letter from a physician or medical facility declaring the emergency and giving the doctor’s contact information. The subject line must include the case or receipt number plus the name and date of birth of either the petitioner or the beneficiary.7Travel.State.Gov. Immigrant Visas Processing – General FAQs

Financial hardship, job offers, and travel plans do not qualify. If no visa number is available in your category, nothing can be expedited.

Don’t Let a Long Wait Cause a Lapse

The longer the scheduling wait, the greater the risk of missing a deadline you didn’t know was running. Federal law requires the State Department to terminate the registration of any applicant who fails to apply for a visa within one year of being notified that one is available.8GovInfo. 8 USC 1153 – Allocation of Immigrant Visas The same one-year clock applies if you miss a scheduled interview without following up or if you fail to submit requested evidence after a refusal.

After termination, you can request reinstatement within two years of the original notification, but only by showing your failure to act was due to circumstances beyond your control.9eCFR. 22 CFR 42.83 – Termination of Registration Miss that window and the registration is permanently cancelled, meaning the petition process starts over. Answer every NVC message, and keep your contact information current the entire time you’re waiting.

One document deadline also runs during long waits: police certificates expire two years after issuance. If yours lapses before your interview, you’ll need a fresh one.

If a Child in Your Case Is Approaching 21

A long scheduling wait can eliminate a child’s eligibility outright once they turn 21, so this timing needs attention before it becomes urgent.

The Child Status Protection Act helps in some cases. For immediate relatives, the child’s age freezes on the date the petition was filed, so an unmarried child stays eligible. For family preference, employment-based, and diversity categories, the CSPA age is the child’s age when a visa becomes available minus the number of days the petition was pending at USCIS; if that figure is under 21, the child is still a “child” for immigration purposes.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Child Status Protection Act (CSPA)

CSPA protection applies only if the beneficiary seeks to acquire the visa within one year of a visa becoming available. If a child in your case is close to aging out, move through the NVC steps as quickly as you can and consider talking with an immigration attorney about timing.
