If you e-file and choose direct deposit, the IRS typically issues your federal tax refund within 21 days of accepting your return.1Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund Paper returns take six weeks or longer, and several specific situations can stretch either timeline well past those benchmarks.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds So how long it actually takes to get your tax refund depends on how you filed, how you asked to be paid, what credits you claimed, and whether anything on the return needs a closer look.
Standard Timelines by Filing Method
The 21-day window applies to electronically filed returns with no issues.3Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms It’s an administrative target, not a legal guarantee, and it assumes the return is complete, accurate, and doesn’t trigger any additional review.
Paper returns take longer because IRS staff have to open, sort, and manually enter the information before processing can begin. The current estimate is six or more weeks from the date the IRS receives a mailed return.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
How you receive the money matters too. Direct deposit is the fastest option and removes the risk of a check being lost, stolen, or returned as undeliverable.4Internal Revenue Service. What Pushes a Refund Past 21 Days
The EITC and ACTC Hold
If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law requires the IRS to hold your entire refund, not just the credit portion, until at least mid-February. The delay comes from the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, which gives the agency time to verify these frequently targeted credits.5Internal Revenue Service. Filing Season Statistics for Week Ending Feb. 6, 2026 The hold applies no matter how early you file.
For 2026 returns, if you e-file, choose direct deposit, and have no other issues, the IRS says you can expect your refund by March 2. Where’s My Refund should show an updated status by February 21 for most early EITC and ACTC filers.6Internal Revenue Service. Errors and Manual Review
A mismatched Social Security number, an incorrect calculation, or a missing form can pull your return out of automated processing. A reviewer then has to look at the issue by hand before the refund can move.1Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund
CP05 Notices
If the IRS needs extra time to verify your income, withholding, tax credits, or business income, it may send a CP05 notice. Your return is under review, but you don’t need to do anything unless the IRS asks for more information. The IRS advises waiting at least 60 days from the notice date before contacting them about the refund.7Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP05 Notice
ITIN Applications
If you’re applying for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number by filing Form W-7 with your return, your refund won’t be processed until the ITIN is issued. The IRS processes W-7 forms separately, which can add several weeks.3Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms
Injured Spouse Claims
If you file jointly and your spouse owes a debt that could trigger a refund offset, Form 8379 lets you protect your share. It adds significant time: about 14 weeks when filed with a paper joint return, about 11 weeks when filed with an e-filed joint return, and about 8 weeks when filed by itself after the return is processed. Errors on the form extend it further.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8379
Identity Theft
If someone files a fraudulent return using your information, the IRS may freeze your account until it’s resolved. You’ll generally need to file Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) and submit a paper return. As of 2024, identity theft victim cases were taking an average of roughly 22 months to resolve.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Amended Returns Are Slower
Correcting a return you already filed runs on a different clock. Form 1040-X generally takes 8 to 12 weeks to process, and some cases run up to 16 weeks. E-filing an amended return may cut one or two weeks by eliminating mailing time.14Internal Revenue Service. Interest If the IRS Is Late
If the IRS takes longer than 45 days to issue your refund, it owes you interest on the overpayment.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments The 45-day clock runs from either the filing deadline or the date you actually filed, whichever is later. Refunds issued inside 45 days pay no interest.

Tracking Your Refund
The IRS runs Where’s My Refund on its website and through the IRS2Go mobile app. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of your expected refund.19Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
When you can start checking depends on how you filed. Current-year e-filed returns show up about 24 hours after the IRS receives them. Prior-year e-filed returns take about 3 days. Paper returns take about 3 weeks after mailing.
The tool shows a three-stage tracker: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.4Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Fastest Way to Receive Federal Tax Refund Once the status moves to Refund Sent, the IRS has released the payment, though your bank may take a few more days to make it available.
When Calling the IRS Actually Helps
Phone representatives and Taxpayer Assistance Centers can only research your refund status after enough time has passed: at least 21 days for e-filed returns, and at least 6 weeks for paper returns. Calling earlier won’t help, because representatives won’t have information to share.1Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund
If nothing arrives after the full processing window, you can request a refund trace. For direct deposit, wait at least five days after the 21-day processing period. For paper checks, wait at least six weeks after you mailed the return.20Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund
You Have Three Years to Claim It
Waiting too long forfeits the money entirely. You must file within three years of the original due date or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.21Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund A 2022 return, originally due April 2023, generally must be filed by April 2026 to claim a refund. If you had a filing extension, that extra time is included in the three-year period. After the deadline passes, the IRS has no authority to refund the money, no matter how much you were owed.
