Most approved EAD cards arrive within about one to three weeks of approval. USCIS ships every card through USPS Priority Mail with tracking, and the answer to how long it takes to get an EAD card after approval breaks into two phases: a production window at the USCIS card facility, then a few business days of Priority Mail transit to your address.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The Stages Between Approval and Your Mailbox
After USCIS approves your Form I-765, your online case status moves through three updates. First, “New Card Is Being Produced” means the file has gone to the production facility for printing and quality checks. Next, “Card Was Mailed To Me” means the finished card has been handed off to USPS. Finally, “Card Was Delivered To Me By The Post Office” confirms USPS tracking shows it reached your address.
Each status change can take a few days on its own. If your status still reads “New Card Is Being Produced,” the card has not shipped yet, and no USPS tracking exists to check. Production slows when USCIS is working through a high volume of approvals, so the gap between approval and the mailing update is where most of the variability sits.
Typical Delivery Window
USCIS does not publish an official delivery window for EADs. Most applicants report their card arriving within one to two weeks of the “Card Was Mailed To Me” update. When USCIS launched the Secure Mail Initiative, it said Priority Mail delivers documents two to four business days faster than the first-class mail it replaced.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Add the production phase to the shipping phase and the practical range from approval to mailbox is roughly 7 to 21 days for most applicants. Some wait longer during peak filing periods.
How to Track Your Card
You can check your case status any time using the USCIS Case Status Online tool. Enter the 13-character receipt number that starts with three letters, printed on your I-797 notice. Once the status shows the card has been mailed, USPS tracking information appears with it.
Take that tracking number to the USPS website for real-time location updates. USCIS also recommends signing up for USPS Informed Delivery, which sends daily email images of incoming mail and lets you set text alerts and delivery instructions for your carrier.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. What Slows Delivery Down
Processing volume at USCIS is the biggest factor. When filings spike, the card production facility gets backed up, and approved cases can sit in “New Card Is Being Produced” longer than usual. National holidays compress both government and postal schedules and add days to the total. Weather and general USPS delays affect transit time once the card ships.
The single most preventable cause of delay is an outdated mailing address. If you moved after filing your I-765 and did not update USCIS, your card can go to the wrong location and come back as undeliverable. You are required to report an address change to USCIS within 10 days of moving, either through your USCIS online account or by mailing a paper Form AR-11.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. When to Report a Missing Card
If your case status shows the card was mailed but nothing has arrived, start with the USPS tracking. If tracking says the card was delivered but you do not have it, check with anyone else at your address and contact your local post office.
For a card that never arrives, you can submit a non-delivery inquiry through the USCIS e-Request system, but USCIS asks that you wait at least 90 days after receiving your approval notice before filing one.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Non-Delivery of Card Filing earlier means USCIS will reject the inquiry. Use the wait to confirm your address is correct in the USCIS system and to follow up with USPS on the tracking status.
Requesting Expedited Processing
If a real emergency comes up while you are waiting, you can ask USCIS to expedite your case. Expedite requests are not guaranteed, and USCIS is explicit that needing work authorization, on its own, is not enough to qualify.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests You generally need to show one of the following:
- Severe financial loss to a company or an individual, such as a business at risk of failing or a person facing job loss or loss of critical public benefits.
- An emergency situation, including humanitarian need or an urgent government interest.
- An urgent request from a nonprofit furthering U.S. cultural or social interests.
You also need to show the urgency was not caused by your own delay in filing. To submit an expedite request, contact the USCIS Contact Center, use the Emma chatbot on the USCIS website, or send a secure message through your USCIS online account. Have your receipt number and supporting evidence ready. USCIS will ask you to upload documentation through your online account to back up the request.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Keep Your Address Current
An outdated address is the most common reason EAD cards go missing, and fixing the problem after the fact is far harder than preventing it. USCIS requires notice of any address change within 10 days of moving.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address The fastest way is the change-of-address tool in your USCIS online account. You can also mail a paper Form AR-11, though the online option processes faster.
Updating your address with USCIS and updating it with USPS are two separate things, so do both. A USPS mail forwarding request helps catch mail sent to your old address, but it does not update USCIS records. If USCIS ships your EAD to an old address and no forwarding is in place, the card gets returned, and you may end up filing a new I-765 and paying the fee again to get it reissued.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
