How Long Does It Take to Get Irish Citizenship?

How long it takes to get Irish citizenship depends entirely on which route you qualify for. If a parent was born in Ireland, you are already a citizen and only need to order a passport. If the Irish-born relative is a grandparent, registering on the Foreign Births Register takes about 12 months. Naturalization through residence is the longest road: at least five years of qualifying residence, up to 19 months of processing, and several more months waiting for a ceremony. End to end, most naturalization applicants should plan for roughly six to seven years from first arriving in Ireland to holding a certificate.

Find Your Route First

The timeline question only has a useful answer once you know which category you fall into. Three broad paths exist, and they operate on completely different clocks.

  • A parent born in Ireland means you are already an Irish citizen automatically. No application, no queue.
  • A grandparent born in Ireland means you must register on the Foreign Births Register before citizenship takes effect.
  • No Irish parent or grandparent means naturalization through residence, which has a fixed residency requirement plus government processing time.

Spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens follow the naturalization path but with a shorter residency requirement. More on that below.

If a Parent Was Born in Ireland

You are an Irish citizen by descent automatically. There is nothing to register and no waiting period for the citizenship itself. You prove it by applying for a passport, using your parent’s Irish birth certificate as evidence.

The only wait is passport processing. A first-time online application takes roughly 20 working days from when the Passport Office receives your supporting documents.1Ireland.ie. Passport Turnaround Times Paper applications by post take at least eight weeks.2Citizens Information. How to Apply for Your First Irish Passport as an Adult First-time applications cannot be expedited, so do not book travel until the passport is physically in your hands.

If a Grandparent Was Born in Ireland

You are not automatically a citizen through a grandparent. You must register on the Foreign Births Register, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs, and citizenship only takes effect on the date your name is entered in the register, not the date you applied.

Current processing is approximately 12 months from when the Department receives your completed application with all supporting documents.3Department of Foreign Affairs. Registering a Foreign Birth Staffing and application volume can push it longer. You submit original civil birth certificates, marriage certificates, and other documents proving the direct family line. Once registered, you can apply for a passport, which adds roughly another 20 working days online.1Ireland.ie. Passport Turnaround Times

One trap worth flagging. If your parent was eligible to register through the Foreign Births Register but never actually did so before you were born, you cannot claim citizenship through that parent. Each generation must register before the next generation is born for the chain to continue.4Citizens Information. The Foreign Births Register

The Naturalization Timeline

Naturalization is the long path. It has three distinct waits stacked back to back: earning the residency, waiting for a decision, and waiting for a ceremony.

Wait One: Building the Residency

The Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 sets out the formula.5Irish Statute Book. Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1956 You need:

  • One full year of continuous residence in Ireland immediately before you apply.
  • Four more years of reckonable residence (1,460 days) within the eight years before that continuous year. Leap years add an extra day.

The earlier four years do not have to be consecutive. If you lived in Ireland for two years, left for a year, and returned, the earlier time still counts as long as it falls inside the eight-year window and you held qualifying immigration permission throughout.6Immigration Service Delivery. Spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens qualify faster: three years of reckonable residence on the island of Ireland within the five years before applying, plus the same one-year continuous residence. The marriage or civil partnership must have lasted at least three years, and the couple must be living together when the application is submitted.7Citizens Information. Which Time Actually Counts

This is where many applicants discover their residency clock is shorter than they thought. Only certain immigration permission stamps qualify as reckonable residence:8Immigration Service Delivery. Immigration Permission/Stamps

  • Stamp 1: work permit holders
  • Stamp 1G: graduate permission and certain spousal permissions
  • Stamp 1H: working holiday authorization
  • Stamp 3: non-EEA dependants of employment permit holders
  • Stamp 4: permission to reside and work without restriction
  • Stamp 5: permission to remain without condition as to time

Time on Stamp 2 or Stamp 2A (student permissions) does not count at all. Neither does time without valid immigration permission, nor time waiting on an international protection decision before status is granted.6Immigration Service Delivery. How to Become an Irish Citizen Guide If you spent three years studying in Ireland before switching to a work permit, your residency clock effectively started on the day the work permit began.

Any gap in your permission, even a short one between renewals, is not reckonable and can make the application ineligible altogether.6Immigration Service Delivery. How to Become an Irish Citizen Guide

The Absence Limit in the Final Year

The final continuous year has a strict cap on time abroad: no more than 70 days out of the country during those 12 months. The days you leave and return are not counted.9Citizens Information. Becoming an Irish Citizen Through Naturalisation An extra 30 days may be allowed for exceptional circumstances such as a health emergency, family crisis, or unavoidable work travel, decided case by case. Over 100 days of absence and the application is automatically ineligible, with no discretion and no refund of the fee.6Immigration Service Delivery. Wait Two: Processing

Once the Department of Justice acknowledges receipt of your application, the completeness check is relatively quick. The longer wait is the background review: immigration history, criminal record, financial conduct, and overall character. Most applications are processed within 19 months.9Citizens Information. Becoming an Irish Citizen Through Naturalisation Complex cases involving residency gaps, legal issues, or missing documentation take longer. Communication is sparse during this period; if the Department requests additional documents, responding promptly matters because delays on your end extend the timeline further.

All adult applicants must also submit a current tax clearance certificate from the Irish Revenue Commissioners with the application, obtained through Revenue’s online eTax Clearance system. Applicants living outside the state, such as spouses in Northern Ireland, need equivalent tax compliance confirmation from the relevant authority.10Immigration Service Delivery. eTax Clearance

Wait Three: The Ceremony

An approval letter is not the finish line. You must attend a citizenship ceremony, and the gap between approval and ceremony adds several more months. After paying the certification fee, you receive an invitation to an upcoming date. Ceremonies are held periodically throughout the year in group settings.11Immigration Service Delivery. Citizenship Ceremonies

At the ceremony you make a declaration of fidelity to the Irish nation and loyalty to the state. You are given the words on the day. You do not become an Irish citizen until the declaration is made, and once the presiding officer confirms it you receive your naturalization certificate on the spot.11Immigration Service Delivery. The Last Step: Passport

Naturalization certificate in hand, you can apply for an Irish passport. First-time applications are the most document-intensive and cannot be expedited. Online applications take roughly 20 working days from when the Passport Office receives supporting documents.1Ireland.ie. Total Time by Route

  • Parent born in Ireland: already a citizen. Passport processing is the only wait, roughly 20 working days online.
  • Grandparent born in Ireland: about 12 months for the Foreign Births Register, then passport processing on top.
  • Standard naturalization: five years of qualifying residence, then up to 19 months of processing, then several months to the ceremony. Roughly six to seven years total from arrival.
  • Spouse of an Irish citizen: three years of qualifying residence within a five-year window, then the same processing and ceremony timeline. Roughly four to five years from arrival, assuming the marriage already existed on arrival.

Each route has documentation requirements that can add weeks or months if something is missing or wrong. Assembling a clean, complete file before you apply is the single most effective way to keep these timelines from stretching further.
