How Long Does It Take to Get Global Entry?

Most people get Global Entry within three to four weeks to about three months from the day they apply, though the timeline can stretch past a year if the background check needs manual review or interview slots near you are booked out. So how long does it take to get Global Entry in practice? U.S. Customs and Border Protection says roughly 80% of applicants clear the initial background review within two weeks, and the full processing time from application to approval can exceed 90 days depending on interview availability and background check complexity.¹²

The Two Waits That Add Up to Your Total

Every Global Entry application moves through two stages, and your total wait is really the sum of both.

The first stage is the background check. After you submit the online application and pay the $120 non-refundable fee, CBP screens you against criminal, law enforcement, customs, immigration, and terrorist databases, including biometric fingerprint records.³ About 80% of applicants come out the other side with “conditional approval” within two weeks.¹ That’s the step that clears you to book an interview.

The second stage is the in-person interview, and this is where most of the total elapsed time actually lives. You can’t schedule it until conditional approval lands, and once you can, availability at your nearest enrollment center dictates how much longer you wait.

When the Background Check Takes Longer

If your application gets pulled for manual review instead of moving through the automated screen, the timeline changes dramatically. CBP currently estimates 12 to 24 months for manual processing.² You won’t necessarily be told why your file was flagged, and there’s no way to expedite this stage. The tell is silence: if weeks have gone by with no status change in your Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account, that usually means the file is sitting in the manual queue.

Anything unusual in your background can trigger this — old criminal records, past customs or immigration issues, or even inconsistent information on the application itself.⁴

The Interview Bottleneck

Once conditionally approved, your TTP account will prompt you to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center.¹ Some centers have slots open within days. Others are booked out for weeks or months, and major metropolitan airports tend to have the longest queues. Smaller airports and land border enrollment centers often have far shorter waits, so it’s worth searching beyond the location closest to home.

The interview itself is short. Expect about 10 to 15 minutes: a CBP officer verifies your identity, asks about your travel and background, and takes your fingerprints and photograph.⁵ In most cases, the officer approves membership right there.

Enrollment on Arrival Can Skip the Wait

If you have an international trip coming up, Enrollment on Arrival is often the fastest way to complete the interview. Conditionally approved applicants can handle it when they land in the U.S. at a participating airport, with no appointment needed.⁶ Dozens of U.S. airports participate, along with preclearance locations in Canada, Ireland, the Caribbean, and Abu Dhabi. CBP officers handle the interview as part of your standard admissibility inspection when you arrive.

How Fast You Can Actually Use It

Approval and usability happen at the same moment. Once the officer approves you, a notification hits your TTP account and your Known Traveler Number (also called your PASSID) becomes available immediately.⁷ Add that number to your airline reservations and TSA PreCheck benefits start showing up on your boarding pass right away.⁸

The physical Global Entry card is mailed separately and usually arrives within a few weeks. You don’t need it for airports; it’s only used at land and sea ports of entry, and it must be activated through your TTP account within 30 days of arrival.⁹⁸ Waiting on the card is not waiting on Global Entry — you’re already a member the moment the officer approves you.

What Speeds Things Up, What Slows Them Down

The background check is largely outside your control. The interview isn’t. A few things shift the timeline in either direction:

Application accuracy. Incomplete or inconsistent information triggers additional review. Double-check travel history, employment details, and addresses before you submit.
Background complications. Any criminal record, immigration issue, or customs violation — even minor and old — can drop your file into the 12-to-24-month manual queue.⁴
Seasonal demand. Volume spikes before summer travel and winter holidays. Applying in the fall or early winter usually means shorter waits at every stage.
Enrollment center choice. Major metro airports have the longest interview backlogs. Smaller airports and land border centers often have openings within days.
Enrollment on Arrival. If you’re traveling internationally soon, this can replace weeks of waiting for an appointment with a stop at CBP the moment you land.

For a straightforward application with no background complications and quick interview availability, the entire process from submission to final approval can wrap up in three to four weeks. For applicants who hit the manual review queue or face long interview waits, several months is realistic, and the outer edge reaches well past a year.

Renewals Follow Different Timing

If you already have Global Entry and you’re asking about renewal instead, the timing rules are different. Membership lasts five years, and you become eligible to renew one year before expiration.¹⁰⁸ Submit before your expiration date and you keep your benefits for up to 24 months past expiration while CBP processes the renewal. Miss that window and benefits stop the day your membership lapses. Renewals don’t always require a new interview, and eligible renewal applicants who are 18 or older with recent fingerprints and a photo on file may qualify for a remote video interview.¹¹ First-time applicants can’t use the video option.
